Getting out of Cults
in this case, POEE (Paratheo-Anametamystikhood of Eris Esoteric).
seems to be a cult of Discord or Ares, as my friend described it to me. any help on how to get out and off their mailing lists? he doesn't remember where-how he signed up (was plastered at the time). any help's appreciated.

i'm sure that your friend's situation is real and frustrating... but i think accidently signing up for a cult while drunk is one of the funniest things i've ever heard.

I looked up 'Paratheo-Anametamystikhood of Eris Esoteric' - and they seem fairly harmless - if anything, they might be on the same kind of level as the Church of The Sub-Genius, which, it seems, they are affiliated to (they appear to host Bob-isms on their web-site anyway) - So unless it is you who is winding us up, I wonder whether your friend is either gently teasing you, or perhaps is slightly confused himself.
As for mailing lists, telling them you have moved and could they 'please' forward their mail onto your new address might work, as would actually moving to another address (but not informing the cult's headquarters) |

I am a Discoridan Pope. (Everyone is a Pope.) Your friend has been selected. It is not Ares (god of War), it is Eris (goddess of chaos). Is it a joke disguised as a religion? Or a religion disguised as a joke? For further edification, try the Principia Discordia.
Discordians are not necessarily Sub-Geniouses, or vice versa, but there is certainly overlap. (fnord).

heh heh, well, if you are going to join a cult while your drunk, I think a discordian cult is probably one of the most appropriate. It's better then waking up and finding yourself press-ganged in the sea-faring portion of the Church of Scientology.
