Weird little quiz I found..

I don't know how much this is circulating so you guys may or may not have already seen it.. Sort of interesting. It is quick and work-safe if you care.

i_am_not_worthy 10-18-2004 04:10 AM

That is amazing!!!
Have done one like it before - what triggers your mind to think that way???

GMontag 10-18-2004 04:24 AM

I have a feeling that it has nothing to do with the math problems at all. They are simply to get you in the habit of answering quickly and without thinking. The answers to the last question are just the most common thing first associated with the type of thing (trying not to give away the test).

Oddly, I was in the 2% for the first test, but the 98% for the second.

EDIT: I sincerely doubt the numbers are that high though. Maybe 75%.

yep, that's what happened with me, too.

noodles 10-18-2004 08:49 AM

2% in both :-/

Tralls 10-18-2004 09:14 AM

I was in 2%. I thought of a blue wrench and a potato (which is a vegetable right?!)

Cadwiz 10-18-2004 09:44 AM

Orange hammer. Does that put me in the 2% or the 98%? Bell pepper on the second one. I'm not sure why, I hate them.

djtestudo 10-18-2004 09:53 AM

Well, I'm now officially a sheep :p

Glory's Sun 10-18-2004 10:02 AM

I have a different but abnormal mind.. ppffftt.. that's common knowledge :p

cartmen34 10-18-2004 10:20 AM

interesting. I'm with the 2%'ers...but only half-way. I thought of a blue hammer.

Didn't do the second one.

klep 10-18-2004 10:22 AM

i thought of a blue hammer. kind of close i guess...

tspikes51 10-18-2004 10:42 AM

Blue screwdriver.
Tomato

2%. Definately. I also scored extremely left-brained on one of those tests.

Giltwist 10-18-2004 10:52 AM

Mauve wrench and okra, but then again I make it a point to think differently than most people. ;)

I thought of a blue hammer too! And then a carrot. Predictive bastages... reading my mind. :hmm:

keyshawn 10-18-2004 11:52 AM

allright....

2% for me - woot !

*Smirks*

[btw, i thought of a blue wrench and corn]

CSflim 10-18-2004 01:16 PM

I was in the 2% both times, I guess that makes me one in 2,500.

I always knew I was kinda special.

Oh, and here's another vote for "the maths is irrelevant".

adysav 10-18-2004 02:06 PM

For all the people who seem to like wallowing in their 'abnormality', 14 out of 16 people in this thread are 'abnormal', myself included.

Hmmmm...perhaps this test is somewhat less than scientific?

Or maybe the TFP Philosophy Board is a skewed sample?

:)

adysav 10-18-2004 02:13 PM

Perhaps you just thought you weren't thinking about it, but really you were.

Nafter 10-18-2004 02:16 PM

yellow wrench, and potato, same as some others, maybe we think differently, in the same way heh

Dilbert1234567 10-18-2004 02:43 PM

white screw driver,

squash.

yeah im not normal, we have learned nothing today.

t193r7 10-18-2004 02:55 PM

I'm the 98% in both question this time,
but I did the same test half a year ago and I was the 98% in the first one and 2% in the second one.

Suave 10-18-2004 03:51 PM

Yay for intro level psychology. Those predictive quizzes operate on the principle of "prototypical" objects. A prototypical object is one that, in most people's minds, fully and best embodies a certain group of objects, or that they are at least the most familiar with, and stands out.

A carrot is a very "vegetably" vegetable, and stands out from all the leafy greens and everything else by being brightly coloured. Of those who don't say "carrot", the majority would probably say "lettuce", or "broccoli".

With the hammer and colour, same thing; a hammer is a basic, familiar, and very "tool-like" tool. Red is a bright colour, as well as being a primary colour. Therefore, they're both very likely to be the answer.

nash 10-18-2004 03:56 PM

green hammer/celery

MSD 10-18-2004 07:19 PM

I knew it wasn't a good sign when I got stuck on 12 + 53. I really should go to sleep now.

I started with a grey hammer, like the one sitting on my desk, and nearly had a brain hemmorhage when I tried to say "rutabega" and "artichoke"at the same time.

daking 10-18-2004 07:46 PM

its obviously not 2% its something like 40%, but as it gets more people than not they can accentuate the suggestion by saying 98/2 split.

Halx 10-19-2004 12:28 AM

It's quite obvious that the statistics are wrong because a hell of a lost more than 2% of you are claiming different.

pink hammer
broccoli

anti fishstick 10-19-2004 09:47 AM

i thought of a red screwdriver
and cauliflower.

but i knew about this before. and i have picked carrot the very first time i took this kind of thing.

micah67 10-19-2004 10:35 AM

Yellow Hammer and squash

I've read that 54.8% of all statistics are made up - maybe this is a similar case?

Dane Bramage 10-19-2004 10:49 AM

2% for me... I always knew I was weird, but sheesh.

Either that, or this forum attracts the 2% of the world that thinks differetly... which I would certainly agree with.

I kinda ruined it for myself. I read everybody's responses before taking the quiz... but for what it's worth.

Orange Hammer (and I didn't do the other one).

Ruse 10-19-2004 12:28 PM

heh 2% and 2% I guess Im abnormal thought of a thought of a green saw and a tomato

Grancey 10-19-2004 12:58 PM

98% on the first, and 2% on the second. In the first test the answer just popped out. In the second test I was anticipating having to give an answer, so I think the anticipation altered my ability to just answer off the top of my head.

Red Hammer
Broccoli

Unright 10-19-2004 01:12 PM

Purple wrench....

...and a cucumber.

Maybe it works better if you read it out loud to someone?

rockford1004 10-19-2004 01:46 PM

When it comes to tools I'm normal because I thought of the Red Hammer but the veggies were not so normal, I thought of Corn. I guess sometimes I am normal and sometimes I am not.

Blue Axe is me

KinkyKiwi 10-19-2004 04:26 PM

purple wrench and brocolli...thsi doesnt seem effective at all ..ether that or most people here have abnormal minds...

mo42 10-20-2004 12:19 PM

Whoah... I thought pink hammer and broccoli too.

ravenradiodj 10-20-2004 01:09 PM

blue screwdriver and broccoli, so 2% both times.....finally, official confirmation of my abnormality!

roboshark 10-20-2004 09:56 PM

Blue dildo and a zucchini.

As far as abnormality goes, I own all y'all!

CityOfAngels 10-20-2004 11:16 PM

green wrench

dbc 10-21-2004 08:36 AM

i said blue screwdriver too, but then i said potato for the second test.

Stug 10-21-2004 08:52 AM

Purple Pliers?

It's just reinforces that quote: "97.6 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot"!

Karkaboosh1 10-21-2004 11:21 AM

its a chain lettter, so basicly aimed for the 'simple minded' pesants of the world... so i guess if we give them red hammer shaped carrots they'd be just dandy...

thefictionweliv 10-21-2004 11:50 PM

The math is really irrelevant its a game of percentages just naturally ask someone to think of their favorite number 1-10 the highest percentage of people pick 7.
blue wrench and carrot o.0

costello 10-22-2004 02:25 AM

blue screwdriver here too and my veggie was a beet! so odd that was the first thing to come to my mind. methinks the stats are a LITTLE off, if not i think we should all be sat down and studied :P

Incidentally, neither potatoes nor lettuce are vegetables

d*d 10-22-2004 04:46 AM

80% of statistics are made up on the spot, this is one of those common assossiation things, like think of a jungle animal - quick...... a lot of people will say "lion" lions don't even live in the jungle. For the record red spanner (so half right) and potato
although if i had to guess what most people would say, i would have said carrot

This is the answer! We all all somewhat skewed and beyond the normal. Don't believe ? How many normal people have you seen writing in the TFP?

My Result? A somewhat orangey shade of pink coloured post hole digger and a well roasted butternut pumpkin.

dobster 10-22-2004 04:50 PM

Thought of a red spanner (wrench) and a green Aubergine. (???!!!)

I think i'm part of the 98%, its just that my maths is shit.

And so is my vegetable recognition. (And typing, but I edited that out before you had a chance to comment...)

molloby 10-23-2004 01:10 AM

Red hammer and an orange.

I'm good at thinking of vegetables...

Hah! I thought of a red powerdrill

Does that put me in the 98% or 2%?

10-23-2004 12:03 PM

no i got a pink wrench.......

filtherton 10-23-2004 12:14 PM

I want to know what they mean by "abnormal". Is it like abnormal in a child molesty kind of way, or abnormal in a "i like experimental jazz" kinda way?

That's spooky - I was in the 2% for both as well and thought of:

A silver wrench and a potato.

Hmmm....

Xell101 10-23-2004 08:20 PM

Black hacksaw
Brussel Sprouts

xepherys 10-24-2004 10:57 PM

I hit both... 98% for me...

Oddly enough, the ONLY answers I've seen people give other than those are "blue screwdriver" which I've seen ehre several times, and "Tomato". It is interesting though...

FoolThemAll 10-25-2004 08:54 AM

blue wrench....looked at the responses before taking the second quiz

MuadDib 10-26-2004 09:55 PM

Its my understanding that this type of exercise is all about what areas of the brain you are using by doing the math problems. Its called a priming effect and, essentially, what is going on is that the neurons around the areas of the brain functioning during the math fire and prime the neurons around the area of the mind where other items are stored. One theory, I heard about this specific exercise is that the color red, the tool hammer, and the vegetable carrot tend to be the first specific item you learn as a child in their respective categories and that the math is meant to either prime the area associated to the earlier learning or to break down any thoughts in your day to day life that might otherwise pop up to biased the exercise (like if I used a screwdriver several hours before reading the quiz).

Oh yeah, I was 2% and 98%. I said squash on the second one, but I think thats cause its getting close to Halloween and I see them all over.

copenhagen 10-31-2004 03:23 PM

blue hammer also. and carrot on the second one.

Spotila 11-03-2004 05:00 AM

red spanner and parsley D:

Zeraph 11-03-2004 11:22 AM

2% in both.

Thought of an orange wrench, and broccoli.

The stats are either wrong, or (not surprisingly) TFT has attracted "unique" individuals.

Charlatan 11-03-2004 11:39 AM

Blue Screwdriver...

Tomato.

Still pretty kool.

red screwdriver and a zucchini

Seer666 11-04-2004 06:05 AM

2%. Blue Hammer. But then, i've always know I'm odd.

Side note, my room mate is also a loon. He thought of a red drill.

Kagemusha222 11-04-2004 04:21 PM

2% on both.... blue saw and a cucumber

roadkill 11-04-2004 06:16 PM

so are we in the 2% if we got the normal ones then?

Redjake 11-04-2004 06:25 PM

holy crap, I did the calculations as fast as possible and it was like "think of a color and a tool"

the VERY first thing that popped in my mind was a wall painted red and a claw hammer.

RED HAMMER

scrolled down to read "red hammer"

I am in awe..........

Redjake 11-04-2004 06:30 PM

the more I think about this, the more weird it seems. I honestly thought of RED and HAMMER at the same time. This is just freaky. I wonder why it didn't work for the rest of you guys?

Mantus 11-04-2004 07:29 PM

I probably got every single one of the math questions wrong. I answered as fast as I read the numbers.

Red Wrench. Orange.

Very cool little test, thank you.

taog 11-07-2004 05:08 PM

blue wrench and lettuce for me... 2% both times

TawG 11-07-2004 07:33 PM

ive done both of these before, but it didnt strike me untill they asked me about the things... then i remembered what the test was looking for and i automaticly put myself into the 98% group... lol!

before that i think i was somewhere inbetween...

planets 11-08-2004 12:50 AM

mouse, white (cos that's the colour of my cursor)
and weed. if that's a veggie....
do potheads count under the conventional population?

Karby 11-08-2004 09:39 AM

blue wrench and a tomato.
i've always known i was weird.

kollege_gal2000 11-10-2004 08:36 AM

I thought of a blue hammer and a potatoe.

The only reason for this is because blue is one of my favorite colors, and I absolutly love potatoes.

ariekitten 11-11-2004 05:31 PM

green wrench and celery. i hate celery.

reiii 11-11-2004 06:41 PM

Omg annoying argument with roommate:

His opinion: same percentage of people will answer red hammer without math questions

My opinion: no way, there is some thought priming in effect

Stiltzkin 11-11-2004 11:05 PM

Blue hammer, tomato.

1010011010 11-12-2004 05:28 PM

Sources of self-selection sampling error:
People who visit TFP.
People who visit Philosophy.
People who visited this thread.
People who took the quiz.
People who chose to post their results.

The last one is the kicker, though. The 2%ers are more likely to volunteer their "unique" results than the people who answer with the predicted responses. So, yeah, while I doubt there's any significant basis for the 98:2 claim... this thread wouldn't be significant evidence against it.

I'd already taken the quiz a while back, so I was trying to remember what the "common" answers were... so did I guess "red hammer" and "carrot" because that's what I was trying to remember? or am I a boring red hammer using carrot eater?

Fate 11-12-2004 08:04 PM

wrench blue
carrot

guess if I average that out... I'm similar to 51% of people.

joeshoe 11-12-2004 11:34 PM

I thought of a grey calculator for the first one and zucchini for the second.
I guess a calculator is only arguably a "tool," but after all those math calculations...
and I hate zucchini

1st one: sorta 2%; Red Screwdriver.

didn't take the second one.

98% and 2%.

Red Hammer and Corn.

sobedrummer 11-23-2004 02:17 AM

Yup... exactly what i had...
but really, i can't recall the last tim ei actually saw a red hammer.

yahway96 11-23-2004 01:14 PM

black screwdriver and squash
so if most of us are in the 2% does that make use normal and everyone else abnormal

Nazggul 11-23-2004 02:01 PM

Hammer, Blue and Lettuce.

Reese 11-24-2004 11:10 PM

Blue Screwdriver and Potato here.

I'd have to guess that the test stats are wrong, or TFP is full of abnormal people. I'm leaning toward the latter...

radioguy 11-25-2004 01:58 AM

blue hammer and cucumber.

they might have had me on the first one if they had said name a tool and its colour, because as it asked I thought of a tool then just a colour... and I like blue :D

i really doubt it is correct 98% of the time as well.
