Hyperactivity because of illness??

My daughter is coming down with a cold I think. She obviously has a cough and a slight fever. I discovered this yesterday. I also found that yesterday she was extremely hyper. She was so wild that she hurt another child she was playing with. I made her sit at the table for a minute and told her to be still and quiet for just 1 minute. She was unable to keep her body even on the chair, pulled the table cloth askew, talked, whined, sang, and constantly wiggled the entire time. I suggested that she try to sit completely still for just 15 seconds and I counted them for her thinking that would help her. She was still unable to be still OR quiet. I could tell she was trying even. She sat on her hands without my suggestion, and she she pinched her lips together in a seeming effort to be quiet. She couldn't it seemed. She's only 4 yrs old so I don't think she was trying to put on a show of being still or "faking me out".

I personally remember when I was a kid going through the thinking process of "I hurt. I can't think about it or it will hurt more and I don't want to stop playing. I gotta MOVE." and I know I was very hyper when I was sick. This is by my own mother's observation when I specifically asked her about it today. She tells me that she found that when I was sick if she just made me sit with her and hugged me tightly even though I complained loudly that it never seemed to take more than 5 minutes and I would be practically asleep.

Is this a common response to illness or am I and my daughter just WEIRD?? How do your kids act when they're coming down with something?? We don't stay hyper when the illness gets worse but this happens when it's just beginning and we're just starting to feel icky.

I am assuming you have not given her any cold medicine. That can be attributed to the Hyeractivity in many cases. If not I think its pretty normal, its better than them being a Lethargic zombie when they are sick. Hope she is feeling better. Although, Many times my youngsters get hyper when they are overtired..

I had given her some cold medicine 8 hours prior to this episode of extremem hyperactivity. She had also had an afternoon nap and had only been awake for about 4 hours at that point.

She is normally very active and constantly going but she can usually restrain herself when asked for at least a minute. This was nuts - 15 seconds and she couldn't even stay on the stool. Do ya think she as yanking my chain??

depending on what meds you gave her, she might actually have been wired from them. many of the decongestants will increase activity. You cant even buy sudafed at walmart anymore because people can make speed like drugs out of it.

If you read the package on almost all cold/allergy/sinus medications, you will find a warning in about the smallest print possible that says the medication may cause hyperactivity in some people. My dad had the same problem.
