Whats in a name?

Well in less then two months I should be a father, and we know its a boy already.

Since I was a kid I've always liked the name Hannibal. For years I've wanted to name my son that, and then we get the movies.

Most people of course ONLY know the name from the movies, and my wife of course is worried about that.

My thought is by the time it is an issue for him the movies will be quite old and should not matter.

Any thoughts?

I was thinking hannibal from the a-team. I can just picture a little ustwo chewing on a cigar with a shit-eating grin.

I wouldn't worry about the movie having an effect, though you're kid might get called "the cannibal" a few times. It is a pretty badass name.

It's a great classic name and I don't think you should be afraid to use it. In a few years the significance of the Anthony Hopkins movies will fade and no one will make the connection, except for a few old film buffs.

Case in point; my real first name is Mark (duh!), and for years older people called me Dr. Welby. WTF? It was a long time before I figured out that there was a TV show in the 60's about a Dr. Markus Welby.

Anyway, just don't call your son Rambo.

I hope I'm not the only one who thought of the warrior Hannibal when I read this. If I were, I'd be disappointed. I don't see too much harm in naming him that; teasing builds character. Just remember though, a very unique and outstanding name like that will be very inviting for teasing, so you may want to take that into consideration. Some names can be shortened to avoid that, but the only thing I can think of for Hannibal is "Han", which is really not any better in that regard.

But hey, if you love the name, go for it. It's not my kid, so my advice should be taken with a grain, nay a block, of salt.

PLEASE don't be afraid of what others think. Pick a name with meaning and convey the meaning to your kids -- that's all that matters. I have a short list of regrets -- I can count them on one hand -- but one is not naming my sons what I would have had I not listened to others.

BTW -- love the avatar.

I don't think the name will be as much of a stigma as it could have been 20 years ago. Classroom's currently have Sanjits, Guptars, Hans, Pings, Juans.. You get the idea.. I wouldn't call my son Sue or anything, but I don't think a name is as much of a stigma as it used to be.

I work at a hospital, and I see some amazing names come through the doors of L&D. Hannibal is nothing compaired to the girl named Abcde, pronounced Ab-see-dee.
Go with your gut. It is only a name, and has nothing to do with the quality of person your son will be.

Well it's true, it's just a name- but adolescence doesn't realize that. My brother-in-law and his wife named their son Gus- not short for anything, just Gus. Well, that's fine and all, but he will have a hell of a time growing up.

Names go in and out of fashion. We named our children some older, but "conventional", names and lo and behold over the past decade or so, those names are becoming more popular.

As long as the name is not something like Court Queen (and yes, I knew a guy with that name) it will be fine.

Oh dear God....that's terrible. Krystal Chandelier. Wow.
As far as Hannibal, I agree that it is a wonderful name. I figure as long as your last name isn't Lecter, you should be fine, but don't surprised when people make refrence when you first tell them. Eventually eveyone who knows your son will become more accustomed to the name. Your son will create his own meaning behind his name, and that meaning should be much different than a cannabalistic genius that assists federal crime scene investigators. Hopefully.
Congratulations, by the way! Fatherhood is a singluar experience, and can be most rewarding.

My son is Due in Mid December, and we're naming Him Phoenix. We've been told so many times: "But what if kids make fun of him?"

My response was always, "My name is James, and people still found a way to make fun of me based upon my name. That's what kids do."

The way I see it is, Are the two of you happy with the choice of name? Because that's really all that matters. Otherwise, if he's not happy with it, tell him you'll pay for the name change fee when he's 18 =D

I just can't see a little baby named Hannibal.....I chose my twins' names as something that can be carried through from infancy to old age. Of course, naming your child is a personal choice in the end and it should be something everyone should be satisfied with for years to come. You might, as some have done(and I had planned on doing til the spouse took over while i was passed out), choose 2 or 3 names and take a look at the baby, then make your final decision. He may end up looking like a Jonathan or something! Good luck and congrats!! Naming a child is the first of many daunting, but rewarding responsibilities.

My middle name is Lancelot. Well you can just imagine the wicked delight in a persons eyes when they discover that. The trick is to enjoy it as much as others, I love the name, wierd of my parents to name me but my dad insists it's an old family name. My late grandfather was named Havelock. Hannibal is cool, and frankly, being 'named after a psycho' may be a decidedly cool story for your son.

Hmm, in my opinion, there is a difference between realising that kids make fun of other kids' names and actually providing them with mockery-ammunition right off the bat (I judge neither your soon-to-be-son's name, nor USTWO's name choice.)

Also, if you love your kid, as all parents do, you'll not inflict her/him with a name s/he must ENDURE for 13 years of teasing by other children (assuming that your child doesn't care about the name until s/he's five years old.)

Signed,

I'm being nice to mine, his middle name will be James (Mine is campbell) At least this way, if he doesn't like Phoenix, he can be James (Or if My Mother gets her way, PJ) At least he'll get a choice =D

Not like I had a choice, it was James, or Soup boy (sigh, if only seinfeld had been 10 years sooner with the Soup Nazi joke, then it would have been funny =D "Hey Soup Boy!" "NO SOUP FOR YOU!")

I think the name Lucifer sounds cool. I suppose Hannibal would be better than that...

random thoughts:
1) nickname of "Lucy" for a boy.. kinda cool.
2) nicknaming a boy "Han" (Hannibal)... makes me think, "Solo?" (still, not uncool)
3) re: not meeting Georges... the US President Bush immediately springs to mind. If he wins, you can bet there will be a few Republican babies named George this year.

Also, Darklight Adept, the name James is particularly well-used in my family, and I'm quite proud of it (since it's one of my names, too). Still, I couldn't resist the tease.

Yes. I have met too many babies recently who are named Reagan. Sorry if this offends anybody here, but that is one of the worst baby names ever devised.

I think it's time for a Simpsons quote:

Quote:
Marge: Homer, I've been thinking, if the baby's a boy, what do you think of the name Larry?
Homer: Marge, we can't do that! All the kids will call him 'Larry Fairy'.
Marge: Well, how about Louie?
Homer: They'll call him 'Screwy Louie'.
Marge: Bob?
Homer: 'Flob'.
Marge: Luke?
Homer: 'Puke'.
Marge: Marcus?
Homer: 'Mucus'.
Marge: What about Bart?
Homer: Let's see... Bart, Cart, Dart, Ee-art... Nope, can't see any problem with that!

Go with Hannibal and give him a middle name that more "traditional"... if he really hates the name he can opt to use the middle name.

Besides when you shorten Hannibal you get Han... and Han Solo is a good association.

And maybe one day he will grow up to march the elephants on Rome...

Good advice Charlatan. That way he can use his "middle" name in later life if he wants.

I too thought of Hannibal Barca, the great Carthaginian general and scourge of Rome, when I first read this thread. It speaks volumes when more people relate to a movie character than an important historical figure, but that's the media society for you.

I kinda like Hannibal, but it's a bit too "out there" for me. I think your wife may have a point. If most people here think of the movie, maybe the same can be said about his friends as he grows up. Of course, who really cares? It's a nice name. As someone else said, go with your gut.

Finally, I can suggest some cool Irish names if you want.

Let me guess, that the name of a stripper right. Its from Friends, when Chandler hires a stripper.
Chandler - "Her names Krystal Chandeleir, and shes a stripper."
Joey - "Sure you name a girl that, what do you expect her to grow up to be?"

As long as we're sharing opinions, my opinion is that I'm not a big fan of Hannibal because the name is associated with Hannibal Lecter. In the end, you'll do whatever you want, but since this thread is about opinions, mine is not to go with Hannibal. If you already did, who gives a flying you know what about what I think.

For the record, we gave my daughter the middle name James, after her Grandpa. We like it as a girls name. What do you think?

I have a common name, shared with various media types and a mass murderer. It's really not that big a deal. Most people don't care, and kids under 10 won't know at all. And by the time your son is over 10, Hannibal Lecter will be be out of the public consciousness.

I'm working with a bunch of homeless kids right now, and some of the names are Shane, Brandy, Kehlil, Mercedes, Ashley, Jackson, Jules, Kiefer, Michaela, and other choice ones. The kids _all_ tease each other about names, but not with literary or movie references. They do puns and plays on words, like Shane Brain, Keh Steal, things like that.

Although when Shane goes running off the playground out of bounds, I _do_ have the stifle the urge to call, "Come back, Shane!"
