I too thought of Hannibal Barca, the great Carthaginian general and scourge of Rome, when I first read this thread. It speaks volumes when more people relate to a movie character than an important historical figure, but that's the media society for you.
I kinda like Hannibal, but it's a bit too "out there" for me. I think your wife may have a point. If most people here think of the movie, maybe the same can be said about his friends as he grows up. Of course, who really cares? It's a nice name. As someone else said, go with your gut.
Finally, I can suggest some cool Irish names if you want.
