This doesn't really belong on the philosophy board, it would be better suited to Entertainment.

Oh and 2001 is a really great film. I love Kubrick.

To tie this in to the philosophy forum:

The Monolith to me, represents the power of the unknown. That which can be felt but not yet known has a power over all of us. Whether this force has an effect on our lives is dependent on the view of it we each have, and if indeed we allow it to become a part of ourselves.

In the movie the monolith was a divice left by a powerful race of aliens millions of years ago. They were responsible for the evolutionary process on Earth, and later on Europa (?). They represented a force beyond our understanding that we have to deal with in a very real way. When Jupider is ignited in one of the later books and becomes 'Sun of Lucifer', our solar system becomes bianary. I think it's more than the unknown having power. It is the unknowns power being everpresent. We have to deal with reality unfolding itself around us, and it's a big reality. It's about the expansion of relativly narrow vision. It is about growth and evolution; our growth and evolution as a species.
Aurthor C. Clark is one of the most brilliant men in the world. If you haven't read 2001 or 2010 or the rest of the series and you love philosophy or psychology or (of course) science fiction, this is a great series for you.

My understanding is that the whole thing was a genetic experiment by a greater intelligence (a god if you wish) probably repeated throughout the universe. Two monoliths were left for earth-life to find. The first on the earths moon and the second on Europa (pointed to be the first). If earth-life had evolved enough to find the first they were pointed to the second. If the earth-life became advanced enough to get to the second then they were worth further investigation/saving. Humans only just got to the second in time to avert our destruction.
