Lice
I'm posting in the parenting forum cuz I figure you guys have probably had to deal with this at some point.
I work in a group home for troubled teens... it happens to be a girls home... and lice has spread like the plague, and I was lucky enough to have some of these critters use me as a home... ARGH!! We rushed to the store as soon as we found out and went through the Rid treatment. Yuck. It's now 3am. I'm tired, pissy, and would LOVE to know if any of y'all know of any other treatments, ways to prevent getting them, etc etc... :( |
Wash everything. Comb white vinegar through wet hair, as well as the usual lice treatments. Get rid of the eggs...even if you have to pick them out one by one. Lice are little bastards and damn hard to get rid of!
|
I know you have to pick them out one by one... does white vinegar really work?
|
putting a few drops of tea tree oil in your shampoo bottle should work too. They don't like the smell of it, so once you get rid of them, it helps keep them away.
|
Definately wash everything that came into contact with them too, hats, shirts, scarves, etc.
At my daughter's school, they had a huge out break, but only effected the girls/boys with thick hair. We found out they don't like those with thin hair. |
My sister's 4 kids all had them at once.
Put the mattresses in plastic Put the pillows in plastic Wash everything in hot water Any stuffed toys or decorative pillows or other stuff like that - -stick in a hefty bag and seal it tightly for ()i think) two weeks - the lice die atthat point -- then just fluff the stuff in the dryer. Mayonaisse was good for getting the stuff out of the hair |
On my way to work today I'm going to buy a hat... I already don't let them play with my hair. And all the clothes/bedding/etc is in the wash right now. I also sprayed the mattress with the furniture stuff that came in the package.
There were outbreaks at my elementary school, and I somehow never got them as a kid. Dunno why now I got them. Back then we shared brushes, played with each others' hair, etc etc |
Shampoo your carpets too. Get a steam vac. It helps kill the lice, and mites that abound in carpet.
Anything made of material that has been worn or near you in any way needs to be cleaned, washed, or thrown away. |
you will probably want to spray your car too...

I know it went around my nephews elementary school one year pretty bad, and my sister kept having to do his hair, and their's as well, but couldn't figure out why they couldn't get rid of them, well the retards weren't treating EVERYTHING else in the house such as brushes, combs, pillows.....I know its probably already been said but just make sure you do more than your head.
|
Yikes, There is a product called Quell which I believe is perscription. It is a shampoo specifically for lice and you shampoo with it & then use a lice comb to get them out. It works great, smells nasty but will solve the plague.
|
If you really want to be on the safe side, you should wash all your clothes and sheets in a high temeprature (steam them?) and put them away for a week or two in a closed cabinet. Lice need a body to live on, so after a week or two they'll be bound to have gone.

I hate fucking lice. Kids brought them, home from school, what a royal pain. Never had them come back after treatments and cleaning, if thats a consolation

I was messing around and found this link: http://www.mapertontrust.com/headlice/
Seems a bit 'different' and I have no idea if they ship overseas, but hey...if it works, and you have to keep facing the girls who are having a hard time of getting rid of them, it couldn't hurt! My aunt also used tea tree oil in her shampoo after her daughter suffered from a very stubborn case at her school. She went through three VERY expensive treatments of her whole house before she started using it in her shampoo, and hasn't had a problem since. There's tons of info if you just search 'tea tree oil and lice'. As to how much to mix into a certain size of bottle. But I have to say, this was AFTER she washed EVERYTHING with bleach and/or the lice treatments made for the job. (the biggest reason it was so expensive was because she has two other girls, herself and her husband, and she had to treat them all the first two times). I also think the hat is a good idea, also a leave in conditioner, or gel/hairspray and a ponytail couldn't hurt either! :) Good luck! |
