Tragedy for an infant
Over this last weekend in a small town in Illinois A young couple discovered their puppy dragging what appeared to be a dead animal around their yard. However, when they got a closer look they were horrified to see that the dog had, in fact, been dragging around the body of a baby.
It was quite gruesome. No one is certain who's baby it is, and no one has stepped forward with any kind of information. What was given in the paper was that the baby had been burried somewhere and the puppy dug it up. It was only in it's 7th month of gestation, meaning it was a premy. The cause of death was not released. The coroner felt compelled to give the child a name so that he wouldn't just refer to the child as "it" "he" or "the victim" (Not sure if I'd be aloud to give the name) This is the name that is to be put on his donated head stone later this week. Funeral services were all donated, and the plot was bought with money donated from local residents. This was a horrific thing, but also is proof that most people in our state do not know that newborns can be released, no questions asked to any "safe house" including hospitals, firestations and police stations. In fact many of the designated "safe houses" are unaware of the law. This law has been in effect since 2001 and more people should know about it. Maybe this tragedy will help others to become more aware of alternatives to dumping babies or leaving them for dead. Many people are willing to take in unwanted children and raise them if a woman or man feels they cannot assume responsibilty of their newborn.

I feel bad for that baby. We had a case out here where a University Student had her baby and put it in a dumpster because she couldn't care for it. After her trial, part of her punishment was to put stickers on all the dumpster in the county, advertising that anyone could take a baby to the hospital, police station, etc. with no questions asked. It was part of her probation to get the word out about that law. The thought was that a bunch of babies are abandoned in dumpster so they needed to get the word out.

This is so fucked up, on so many different levels, that I don't even know where to begin. I will say, however, that I do not think that the coroner was wrong in naming the child. The baby needed a name. I would've done the same, and to hell with anyone that thinks that he overstepped his authority. maybe it's not part of his job description, but it is a part of his humanity.

I agree Bill.
How many times have you heard of couples who have lost a baby before it was born, and given the baby a name so thatit can rest in peace with a bit of dignity and love. That is a very sad story indeed.
