Tragedy for an infant

Over this last weekend in a small town in Illinois A young couple discovered their puppy dragging what appeared to be a dead animal around their yard. However, when they got a closer look they were horrified to see that the dog had, in fact, been dragging around the body of a baby.

It was quite gruesome. No one is certain who's baby it is, and no one has stepped forward with any kind of information. What was given in the paper was that the baby had been burried somewhere and the puppy dug it up. It was only in it's 7th month of gestation, meaning it was a premy. The cause of death was not released.

The coroner felt compelled to give the child a name so that he wouldn't just refer to the child as "it" "he" or "the victim" (Not sure if I'd be aloud to give the name) This is the name that is to be put on his donated head stone later this week. Funeral services were all donated, and the plot was bought with money donated from local residents.

This was a horrific thing, but also is proof that most people in our state do not know that newborns can be released, no questions asked to any "safe house" including hospitals, firestations and police stations. In fact many of the designated "safe houses" are unaware of the law. This law has been in effect since 2001 and more people should know about it.

Maybe this tragedy will help others to become more aware of alternatives to dumping babies or leaving them for dead. Many people are willing to take in unwanted children and raise them if a woman or man feels they cannot assume responsibilty of their newborn.

This is true, that is why more people should know about being able to leave a baby no questions asked at a safehouse.. I think it would be best for the baby and even the parent. People who do this need help, and these babies need saving, more people should be aware of alternative solutions...

I feel bad for that baby. We had a case out here where a University Student had her baby and put it in a dumpster because she couldn't care for it. After her trial, part of her punishment was to put stickers on all the dumpster in the county, advertising that anyone could take a baby to the hospital, police station, etc. with no questions asked. It was part of her probation to get the word out about that law. The thought was that a bunch of babies are abandoned in dumpster so they needed to get the word out.

Conclusion:

On Tuesday, residents of Middletown laid the baby - born to unknown parents, found by a dog, named by a coroner and loved by a town - to rest.

"In Smalltown, USA, we don't think things like this can happen. But they do," said Allan Dean, pastor of Middletown Presbyterian Church.

(.......)

Logan County Coroner Chuck Fricke announced last week that he would give the baby the name Isaiah Mark. Some people have said he overstepped his authority in doing so.

“As a Christian, I felt it was extremely important,” he said. “This baby has a personality. You can’t have a life snuffed out and not take anything away from that.”

Deputy coroner Warren Rogers said he and his wife had come up with the baby’s name based on two Bible passages - one from the Book of Isaiah that talks about the path God sets for people, the other from the Gospel of Mark about Jesus taking children into his arms.(......)
This was on the front page of the State Journal-Register(Illinois news paper) today along with a picture of a tiny white coffin in the church where ceremony was held for the baby.

A link to the article.

Is there any evidence that the baby was born alive?

The paper didn't release any information as the the cause of death or the condition of the body when they found it. Only that the baby had not been burried and that they had to feed the puppy something to make it throw up. The baby had been dead before the puppy got to it.

This is so fucked up, on so many different levels, that I don't even know where to begin. I will say, however, that I do not think that the coroner was wrong in naming the child. The baby needed a name. I would've done the same, and to hell with anyone that thinks that he overstepped his authority. maybe it's not part of his job description, but it is a part of his humanity.

I agree Bill.

How many times have you heard of couples who have lost a baby before it was born, and given the baby a name so thatit can rest in peace with a bit of dignity and love.

That is a very sad story indeed.
