What songs or lullabies have you/do you sing to your children?
Are they original?

My mom used to sing me an original song, which is now one I sing to my son:

There is a song from Jewel that I have sung to him since he was in the womb:
"Angel Standing By"

All through the night I'll be watching over you

And we also sing to each other different versions of "You are my Sunshine"- I sing it to him "You'll never know, Drew..." and he will sing to me "You'll never know, Mommy" & sometimes replacing Sunshine with Sweetheart, Boyheart (invented by Drew) and Girlheart (also invented by Drew).

There are two songs my mom sang to me as a kid. I've never heard them anywhere else but love them and sing them to my daughter. They go as follows...

Little Monkey in a tree,
Swinging there so merrily.
Throwing coconuts at the sky,
Little monkey close your eyes.

Old black cat down in the barn,
Keeping four black kittens warm.
Light has come for you to sleep,
Dear old black cat close eyes.

Little sheep that slowly crop,

looking like a sleepy head.

i sing anything and everything to my kid. i suggest you have an opera day at your house, like they used to have on mr. rogers' neighborhood. instead of talking, sing everything. it is hilarious fun.

as a baby, we sang led zepplin's d'yer maker to him, and he learned how to say "uh oh" from it. language acquisition is different for everyone, but by singing to him all the time, we saw our guy singing before he was talking and he started talking with sing-song intonation before there were distinguishable words.

he also plays the piano like thelonious monk, banging the key board flat handed in atonal syncopation.

my youngest has loved East Coast music or Newfoundland music since birth and when she is upset we put on some Fables( Heave Away is her favorite ) and she settles and will go to sleep. These songs also work well in the car.
