Screw the assignment. I never did them, and look where it got me. Wait, bad example.
Anyway, what I was going to say was that you (and everyone) should read Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson. It's set in 17th century England and goes into Puritan life in detail. The author did a hell of a lot of research for it. I never realized how much hatred there was between the Anglicans and the Puritans (and don't even mention the crypto-Papists.) It's also pretty fascinating how much of modern culture is based on the Puritan ideals. Our entire view of commerce, for example. Scientific though, for another. From my outline, it sounds like a textbook, but it's a pretty entertaining read. This is the guy that wrote Snow Crash, so he put a neat style into it. |
