Time Travel

Is it possible?

I've heard that travel forwards can work, but backwards isn't possible.

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:26 PM

I heard you need to not weigh anything and have to be going the speed of light.

So, yes. It's not just possible, it's easy!

Tonic 08-11-2003 08:27 PM

I think time travel could work backwards. You'd just change everything in the past. Bam.

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:28 PM

like, the faster you go, the slower time is.

there was an experiment where an atomic clock was a few milliseconds slower after being in space

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:28 PM

Wait, no. Time trave is definitly not possible, cause if it were, somebody would have come from the future by now and given us the technolongy!

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:29 PM

then again, mass would become infinite as you reach light speed

Tonic 08-11-2003 08:29 PM

Maybe only robots could withstand the terrible rigors of time travel? I wouldn't trust a robot to kill hitler.

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:29 PM

maybe they aren't allowed to in the future

like in TimeCop

Tonic 08-11-2003 08:32 PM

Okay, I was just thinking about this and if you tried to go back in time to kill your grandfather before he could father your father, wouldn't that mean that you would never be born so you couldn't go back in time to kill your grandfather?

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:32 PM

Well, haven't you seen those Terminator movies? The robots kill everyone! maybe there is no future to visit, thanks to those robots.

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:32 PM

Or what if you could only time-travel into like, gateways, so time-travel in the past isn't possible UNTIL we perfect it our era?

Speedster 08-11-2003 08:32 PM

I recall reading somewhere about the use of black holes to travel through time.

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:33 PM

"Okay, I was just thinking about this and if you tried to go back in time to kill your grandfather before he could father your father, wouldn't that mean that you would never be born so you couldn't go back in time to kill your grandfather?"

What if there are alternate universes?

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:33 PM

Black holes are just theoretical. Nobody knows if they really exist.

Tonic 08-11-2003 08:33 PM

Are black holes the same thing as worm holes?

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:33 PM

Oh, shit, yeah, black holes are crazy

Like, they distort reality

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:34 PM

No, worm holes are tears in the interdimensional fabric,

black holes are collapsed stars

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:34 PM

Have you heard what those crazy scientists say? Black holes bend light? Please.

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:35 PM

Black holes ABSORB light dude.

They bend TIME.

If you go the speed of light, time like, freezes

What if there are alternate universes?

Assuming there were an infinite number of alt universes, and you could travel between them, wouldn't there be an infinite number of universes traveling to ours?

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:37 PM

If you go the speed of light, I think you just can't see anything. Like when you break the sound barrier, you can't hear anything? Its the light barrier.

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:39 PM

well, tonic, maybe there are

or maybe there are a finite number of universes

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:40 PM

Maybe, there only is one universe, and life is just one big choose your own adventure.

Go to page 76.

I had this idea about time travel a while ago, which I think is a sensible way of finding out if it can ever be done.

We erect a huge monument that will forever remain standing, and we write the date of completion on it. We put the text: "here, on (date), the very first time travellers ever appeared" on it. Then, theoretically, as soon as the monument is complete, people should show up and prove once and for all that time travel is possible.

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:41 PM

the problem is the faster you go, the more mass you have

thats why you need to use negative energy

But, what if fate doesn't exist? Does that mean time travel is impossible without fate?

BUT WHAT IF you require like a teleporter to go back in time.

We would need a gateway for them to come back

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:46 PM

A teleporter, comixmater? I don't know what you mean by that.

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:48 PM

Hmm... perhaps

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:49 PM

^^about fate

a teleporter

think about this:

time travel could need 2 doors

they have one in the future
we don't have one in the present

until we build a door or gateway, they can't visit us and we can't visit them

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:50 PM

Oh, I see. Yeah, but by the time we make a portal... uh... that means that we could travel in time ourselves. IT'S A CATCH 22!

Anywho... Maybe time travel IS fate, in a sense. Maybe everything we do is fate, and any deviation is time travel!

Tonic 08-11-2003 08:51 PM

Technically, as we observe time going forward right now, aren't we time traveling FORWARD?

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:53 PM

So, everyone can time travel, we just can't control it. Or maybe we can, thats why childhood seems longer, than the rest of your life! Maybe, people will learn to master the very flow of time...

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 08:54 PM

I doubt it.

You can't always rely on fate

Tonic 08-11-2003 08:55 PM

Okay that's just crazy because if it's fate, isn't it bound to happen? Like destiny? So of course you can count on it.

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 08:56 PM

Thats very profound... A good argument against fate. Maybe time is the counter to free will.

Tonic 08-11-2003 09:01 PM

Assuming you went beyond the speed of light, wouldn't you become god?

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 09:01 PM

destiny = fate

maybe like aliens can travel in time

cosmixmaster 08-11-2003 09:04 PM

why would be be god?

just cause you're going fast doesn't make you omnipotent

HeadyIncognito 08-11-2003 09:04 PM

That is an interesting analogy tonic. If you could go beyond the speed of light, and reap the time traveling rewards that that entails, you could reshape the world and essentially be a god!
