I think the point that was being made in Donnie Darko was that this new-age type was nothing but a charlotan out to make money. His philiosophy was complete bullshit, and he knew it, but yet he managed to sucker many impressionable people into buying it.

As Donnie said real life is more complex than that.

We must lose the ego, but in the process be very careful not to regress to a preegoic state. We must remember that there is pre-ego, ego, and trans-ego. Not ego, and non-ego states. When people start elevating pre-ego tendancies to the trans-ego level, or reducing trans-ego states to mere pre-ego states the problems begin.

"Pre-egoic impulsiveness is not trans-egoic spontaneity" Trans-egoic has met with the ego, and has accepted it's enduring qualities while shedding it's problems. Pre-egoic is just blind, not some sort of trancendental bliss.
