Have you ever try to comprehend your nonexistence?

Why can't your brain handle it? I always get a headache thinking about it.

You brain finds it difficult to handle it because it had no need to evolve that way....obviously enough.

But yes, I have thought about nonexistence, and I have to say, that I am perfectly at ease with it. In fact I find it comforting.

In the words of Victor Mildrew
"The only thing I fear worse than death, is living forever".
This is a sentiment with which I totally agree.

Nonexistence, to me, at one time or another, has been a comforting thought. Lately, however, the nonexistence of my fellow humans has been more comforting. It is a hard concept to wrap your head around, but sometimes it's enjoyable.

I've never put much thought into it. Never seen a reason to. Nonexistence is the complete abscence of anything, so why would I put energy into thinking about nothing?...

nonexistence? you mean me no longer on the planet and part of the collective consciousness? easy to imagine...I've not been here before and I'll not be here again. A bit egotistical to think that I should be here forever or last somehow forever.

Either there is a plan for your existence or there isn't. Since you have little or no input you can only go with the flow just like the rest of the universe.

Better enjoy it while you got it.

Man cannot comprehend his own death. Thus, we invented Religion.

That's a paraphrase from Heinlein.

Personally, I think being under general anesthesia gives a pretty good impression of oblivion.

Amen, Hedgehog. General anesthesia was the most peaceful moment of my life. I was there, and then I woke up somewhere else. I had no idea what happened in between. My not being here simply means my mind's not running a mile a minute about something I did two or six or ten years ago that still makes me cringe. It sounds like not a bad deal, and I'll be okay when it happens.

I think about the abstract all the time.. Thats a fun one. Now by your nonexistance.. do you mean mine and only mine? Or as in if Humans never existed? As both are interesting. Its quite amazing to think of the difference that would be had I not left an impression on this world. I don't mean to be conceited, but thats one of the things you have to look it.. what WOULDN'T have been. Of course if i didn't exist my sisters would have always had their own room.. heh. Ugh i need to do my paper.. and yes, If i didn't exist I wouldn't be busy doing my english paper (which btw, plz go to my DL File Poll, I need to add it into the paper i'm about to write for wednesday )

I guess I've thought about it every so often, obviously in connection with that old chestnut, "what happens to you after you die". I's kind of a meaningless thing to do, if you think about it. If you don't exist, then you won't be around to see/experience the consequences anyway.
Kadath brought up general anasthesia, which was timely, but no-ones brought up sleep yet. Think about it. If you don't dream, or don't remember them, isn't plain, ordinary sleep like being non-existant too?

If by "nonexistence" you mean death or something, then no, I've never tried to comprehend it, as I believe there's nothing to comprehend.

If by "nonexistence" you mean a state or position of being where the "I" that I "am" is not present, and what remains is a shell or core of being, then I attain that state frequently, and operate from there whenever possible. And it's always possible, just sometimes it's harder than other times.

I have. I think also though if I was given the option to live forever I would. If you found a way into space you could allow yourself to drift for millions of years and explore the universe. I imagine time would no longer have meaning and that it would become more a process of experiences that time progressing.

Actually I don't understand the question.

Do you mean not being able to *imagine* myself not existing? I can do that very well... I look around, think about the other people I know or don't know, and just subtract myself... Presto, the world still exists, just as it will when I'm dead.

Or do you mean imagine me thinking, without having a brain to think with? That would be a contradiction, an impossibility.

Or, finally, are you asking about the riddle of us not being able to decide "for sure" whether we actually exist. In a "The Matrix2 kind of way. Which would be more about the question whether our world exists... But I don't think you asked about that topic.

Could you put your question more precisely, Jesus Pimp?

Is this question a bit like imagining that white rabbit James Stewart used to hang around with? I think it non-existed too.

Children invent non-existing imaginary friends. Some of my best friends non-exist, and I used to non exist many years ago but I dont remember much about it.

I'm reminded of the end of Ghostbusters when the Destroyer's form was to be chosen and the only solution was to think of nothing. Is it possible to comprehend the infinite mystery that is nothingness? So far, human philosophy and theology has failed miserably on that subject and we've done everything in our power to deny the fact that one day we'll be gone. Personally, the concept of eternity and nothingness blows my mind. Still, I can't help but think that maybe being nothing would be restful.
