But it becomes a chicken and the egg question.

Did the screwed up childhood lead them to become a sex offender, or are they from people who are inherently screwed up at a genetic level?

Plus while things like sexual abuse can be clear cut, thing like 'emotional abuse' get a bit hard to quantify.

Also based on 3/4ths of the TFP family posts I see 'dysfunctional' seems like some sort of universal feeling.

It does seem that terms like emotional abuse and dysfunctional family are difficult to quantify as a cause but sexual abuse should be easier to define. If the stat that 40% of abusers were abused themselves them it seems like one of the best ways to predict future child abusers is whether they were abused themselves as children. It is hard to understand why victims would want to victimize others.

Cycle of Violence
Children who are abused or neglected are more likely to become criminal offenders as adults. A National Institute of Justice study found "that childhood abuse increased the odds of future delinquency and adult criminality overall by 40 percent" (Widom, 1992). Child sexual abuse victims are also at risk of becoming ensnared in this cycle of violence. One expert estimates that forty percent of sexual abusers were sexually abused as children (Vanderbilt, 1992). In addition, victims of child sexual abuse are 27.7 times more likely to be arrested for prostitution as adults than non-victims. (Widom, 1995). Some victims become sexual abusers or prostitutes because they have a difficult time relating to others except on sexual terms.

I just said they're statistics, I didn't say I had any idea what they meant.

Well the kicker here is IF there is a genetic component you would have to figure that in as well. I don't have the raw data but if my source was correct then the best predictors of future child abusers would be if their genetic parents were abusers.

Further reason why RP should win (But won't) the Presidency.

Shit, better take down all that child porn in the thread ... oh, wait, it just clarifies an existing law and strengthens penalties.

But it also includes photographs of fully clothed minors in overly "lascivious" poses, and certain obscene visual depictions including a "drawing, cartoon, sculpture, or painting." (Yes, that covers the subset of anime called hentai).
So if someone posts a picture of a child in a lascivious pose using your WiFi service and you don't report it, you could be fined three hundred thousand dollars. Do you really think this is just clarification and strengthened penalties?

Only if you know about it and don't report it, which you were required to do anyway.

Kadath 12-09-2007 09:40 AM

I don't want to bicker, but how do they determine if you knew about it?
