From the Catholic Encyclopedia the eight beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount:
Quote:

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." – C. here is another take on it, word wise, that changes the meaning some. It is from the new american standard, which was translated from the original or oldest documents (scrolls and such)
Matthew chapter 5 verse 3- "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted" "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied" "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy" "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God" "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you" This "translation" presents more of the personal responsibility and personal relationship with Jesus that I feel was intended.
