I'm with willravel. The Drake equation has about as much scientific merit as the Star Wars films. But, let's not detract. The animation itself is incredible and I'll never tire of seeing these images.

This is one of the posts shared that keeps me coming back here to tfp!! We have so much left to share and learn about and it's out there for us to explore. Thanks for this post...it makes some of us who are cosmic feel like we aren't alone and that there are many new adventures waiting for us, now or in the after life.

OK, so the Drake equation had been debunked, it was never meant to be fact, but was to serve as another “what if.”
Most of today’s items of technology were scientific impossibilities 50 years before they were invented. But, someone, somewhere asked the “what ifs” and before humanity could blink an eye, the things once thought of as impossible are now commonplace. To look at the sheer numbers of stars and planets out there and to NOT believe that there are Earth-like planets with life seems like the nonsensical view. Sure, I love staring up at the sky and appreciating the beauty it holds, it’s my favorite part of camping. But the sheer numbers sway me to believe that we are not alone. Of course the sheer distance between possible civilizations may be the real determining factor, but right now traveling at the speed of light is a scientific impossibility, someday light speed travel may be as commonplace as an airplane.

I find the drake equation rather limiting.
Life has a funny habit of showing up everywhere. Superheated thermal vents, the ice of Antarctica, hell there's even a species of bacteria that's happily munching away on plutonium in nuclear reactors. Seems to me that no matter what the conditions anywhere, as long as there's something that can be converted to energy, life will arise to convert it. Last edited by shakran; 07-10-2007 at 09:30 AM..
