Name help...

I don't really post about my personal life too much on TFP, but there are a couple of you who know me. I'll be 27 in October, i've been married for 4 years to the most amazing man i've ever met. Tyson works here at the hospital as a doctor, and last Monday he got home from being in Africa for 3 months. We got to talking about kids. Currently we have two daughters, Lily, 5, and Ava, 3 and we both want more kids. So we've decided to start trying again (YAY!!) Now the only problem is coming up with a name.

We've already decided if we have a boy we're going to name him Connor, after Ty's father who passed away this january. But if it's a girl, we're stuck.

We both liked the name Lily, And Ava we chose after my best friend became horribly ill.

We want a strong name, somethign bold and kind, but also with a strong meaning. Lily means either the flower, or Pure. And Ava means desired.

I've always loved names like Kadence, Faith, Kaia, Kira, Cordelia, Piper. Ty likes different names like Echo, Willow, Ashlyn, Lilah, and Aviva.

But we both decided none of those names went with Lily and Ava, and i'm compltely stuck. I like the idea of naming after a family member, and my sisters middle name is Jade, but Lily, Ava, and Jade, don't excatly go together.

We both agreed we dont want an overly popular name like Brittany, Tiffany, Brad, Mark, that kind of thing. We want something beautiful and unique..

Any ideas you can throw at me i'm open. Thanks guys! Wish us luck!!

I really like some of the names you list. Here are a couple of other suggestions off the top of my head - mostly names I like for our daughter, who we named Annette (Annette is a good named too, btw. :-))

Ekaterin (or Ekaterina)
Diana
Alex (or Alexa)
Caroline (or Coraline - From Neil Gaiman's book of the same name)

There were others, but those come to mind at the moment.

Why should they 'go together'? Are you planning on attaching all your kids permanently at the hips?
The one thing I kept in mind about naming my kids is that I wanted strong names that didn't seem bad for a baby (Like Walter or George-no offense to the Walters and Georges) or seemed too cute for a distinguished older person-a 70 year old 'Britany' or 'Corey'? Nah....again, no offense to the Britany's and Corey's...the opinions expressed are strictly my own idiosyncracies.
Combining names to honor someone important to you is always good. I had a problem with girls' names-only liked 3. I said I wanted to see my daughter, then decide, but I passed out before she was born(too exhausted from her brother's arrival first) and her father took over. When I awoke four hours later, she'd been named. It fits her, but I missed the opportunity to choose.

We took almost a month to name our daughter. We had narrowed it down to a few names and then couple. Finally, we just knew which one was right.

I wouldn't worry about how the names sound together. Just get one you can both agree upon.

Make a list of all the names you like and a list of all the names he likes. Then sit down together and pitch names at each other. When someone disagrees, strike it off the list. Eventually you will have a short list.

Ngdawg, you're right. Why SHOULD they "go" Together? They'll all be independant from one another in a few years anyways. I gues I just grew up with "fitting" names.

Adian and Damien, William and Caleb, Ashley and Alexandra, Heather and David, Taylor and Tacayla, Luka and Kira.

But come to looking at those "fitting: names.. they all have somethign in common, and ending sound, letter, beginning letter. Well not all of them.. but some. And Lily and Ava sure dont have any sounds or letters alike.. but they fit.

I'm gonna go search Behind the name again. They have a ton of names.. I'll go check it out... post back with my results..

thanks again guys

go with Seven.

seriously, get a name you like and not something that's too weird and original. I hate those. or don't get celebrity names. the rest is up to you.

Mexicanonabike hit it right on the head "seven" sounds good to me. But I think it is important to sit down with your husband and just make a list and the ones not agreed upon, strike them off the list. Let us know when you decide, im interested to hear what you come up with.

P.S. I just thought of this while typing, but how about "Erin" that sorta sounds like it goes with the other names you have. Also I can't think of too many ppl that have that name. Hope it helps.

As a teacher, please don't name your child something crazy and hard to pronounce or long to write. I have seen some of the strangest names and some that are way too long. One little boy was named Mister. Another parent I guess wanted a really unique child so named her Y'Munique (I'm unique).

I've always loved the names Sophia, Grace, Giovanna, and Anais (although I probably wouldn't name my child Anais, but it is a pretty name).

Lily and Ava are great names. So, I would say keep doing whatever you're doing to name your kids. Short and not too out there.

I like Kira... but i'm immediately torn as to how it's pronounced... is it like Keer-ah or Kyer-ah (where the "i" is pronounced like "eye")? I'm not sure if the pronunciation issue is a negative or not, really. Either way, I think it's a very nice-sounding name.

We're naming our daughter Dasia. It's pretty rare but I think it will be a good choice for her.

Anyway, we struggled over names for a while: Some of the ones I liked were hated by the wife. I can't even remember all the ones I liked but I know Anya and Giovanna were two top choices.

Is that pronounced "Daysha" or "Day-Sy-ah"? "Dahsha"?
A woman I know worked as a neo-natal care nurse. A patient named her daughter "Areola". The nurses tried to explain the wrongness, but she didn't care-she liked how it 'sounded'.

As a person with the name Jade, I strongly caution you against it for several reasons:
1) There's more boys than you think named Jade.
2) People generally say it Jay, Jake, Jane.... and not Jade, I often have to follow my name with "like the stone" when I introduce myself.
3) Not to mention... People associate the name Jade with a stripper/hooker/some other exotic sexual character, OR the mortal combat character.

As for general names, pick something that's not too normal but not too out there. Save several names for the time of birth. My brother and Sister in Law had several picked out and once their daughter was born they decided based on her personality.

It means "East" in Greek. Not widely used, but I think it sounds so beautiful...

I'm not a fan of "Kaydence" because it sounds like "Cadence" which is a musical term having to do with rhythm. I'm not a fan of names with meanings that are too close to the surface or rigidly imply a person's character - either by meaning or association. (Precious, Hunter, Charity, Mercedes etc...)

From your shortlist, I would go with Kira or Kaia. They're pretty but have room for your child to build her own growing personality into.

We're attached to Simone for a girl, for no particular reason except we like it, and family names for the boys.

Depending on your family, surnames either maiden or back a few generations can provide a surprisingly rich vein of name choices. For example, my first name is my maternal grandmother's maiden name.

The firstborn boy is getting named after my dad, but we're thinking of saving my wife's maiden name in case we need another boy's name. It would be very unconventionial, but it meets the test of being pronouncable and spellable correctly on the first try (a very important test in my book).
