marcus aurelius: mediations
hey,
i was wondering if anyone's read marcus aurelius' meditations. if so, how was it, what do you think of what he has to say, etc? |
I've read enough snatches here and there that it is on my "to read" list.
That probably isn't what you were looking for tho. |
"... The healthy eye ought to see all visible things and not to say, I wish for green things; for this is the condition of a diseased eye. And the healthy hearing and smelling ought to be ready to perceive all that can be heard and smelled. And the healthy stomach ought to be with respect to all food just as the mill with respect to all things which it is formed to grind. And accordingly the healthy understanding ought to be prepared for everything which happens; but that which says, Let my dear children live, and let all men praise whatever I may do, is an eye which seeks for green things, or teeth which seek for soft things... Lebell... word.
The Tao of the Addams Family: "Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos Nuc" Translation: "We gladly feast on those who would subdue us." |
Yes, and reread it...great ideas from the past, relevant today...a thoughtful man with a code of ethics...however, most interesting is trying to understand why he thought it good to kill Christians, conquer Germans on their own land, and didn't feel responsible for his useless kids. I like Stoic philosophy first, him second.

A cook from work has been trying to get me to buy it.
Knowing him, it is a good read. He has lended me Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and The Sales Bible by Giometer. A good guy, I would say that it is worth the read from the protions that I have read and his recomendations alone. |
i actually bought it, and got about halfway through the introduction (which so far is good), but got side tracked and am having a hard time getting back to it. hopefully soon... especially since you all have heard/said good things... motivation to start again i hope.
