My son does the exact same thing! It's hilarious.

We purposefully picked a name for our son which could shortened so to be more casual. When he's in trouble we use the full name

When he was in utero, we called him the peanut, because many guides to fetal development use foods to express size during the different stages. That one stuck.

Otherwise, I call him Kiddo, Buddy and You.

I call our son:

Cutie
Buddy
Baby
Babykins
Stinky
Stink-o-Man
Smelly
Lovekins
Smookie Bear
Smookiekins
Lovey
Sweetie Pie
Honey Bear

I'm sure there are more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. The nickname I give him usually fits his demeanor at the time. Lately, however, he's "Stinky" more often than not due to his rather sudden ability to annihilate his diaper, his onesie, his shorts, and whatever he's sitting on *instantly* with a single bowel movement. It's rather frightening - I'm pretty sure he's posessed...

My three daughters are, in descending order: Pumpkin, I don't remember exactly why. Pokey, Gumbys horse. And Pookie, Garfields bear. They all seem quite protective of their names and each has examples of their nick names.

The oldest has several pumpkin related articles. The second has several versions of Pokey the horse. And the last one has several Pookie bears.

None of them seem to have been damaged by this.

And since my niece has been the Princess for many years, my granddaughter is the Empress of the West.

When not using their names, I call them both muffinhead. Like everyone else, not sure why. I think we can use any silly names and not have any long lasting consequences, as long as the love for your kids is there and they know it.

The list for the older one is:
punkin
peanut
Mare-variation on her name, not the female horse
sweet pea
monkey

For the younger one:
boo
squawky-cuz she squawks
peanut brittle
monkey
muscles-she's 3 and thinks it's hysterical

I think that's all, though I'm sure there are more.

As a kid, I was always Buddy, or Bud. My mothers got a million other names she calls me, but Bud is the only one that stuck. My little brother was a lucas... It got changed to Lucas-Pukas... Alright, so while my dad created it, his big brother (me) was the only one to use it often... It did enrage him so...

My mom called me Svetochka, and my dad by the Americanized short form of my name. He didn't do the "pet names" thing, agreeing with Dobson. As a rule of thumb, if it comes from Dobson or Focus on the Family, you can assume pending further evidence that it's probably a steaming pile of excrement. I'm not exactly a fan.

including ones that are just made-up sounds:
bushkin
loomy
nuk-nuk

and no doubt many others that I can't remember

We called my daughter 'Sweetie' so much when she was young, when she was 2, she thought it was her name, and refused to answer to her real one.

Mostly I call her 'kiddo' or 'hon', she's 16 now.

My son gets called 'dude', 'buddy', or variations of his name.

I would like to say nicknames don't hurt a kid, but my little brother was subject to some that really aggrevated him as a kid & it still bothers him.

I never had any nicknames. In a way I feel left out.
