What do you call your kid?
 

Recently I was reading something by DR. James Dobson, a conservative christian who heads Focus On The Family, he was talking about how the nicknames that parents give their kids can ultimately damage their childs self- image. You know, seemingly innocent things like shorty. I think that this is B.S. by the way, but it got me thinking about what nicknames people give there kids and why.

Ill start, when I was little my mom called me sweet pea, but I only have a son ,so I modified to sweet pickle. I also call him sugar-bugar sometimes.

I got called "you disrespectful little [blank]" a lot, which was funny, cause I've been bigger than everyone pretty much my whole life. :)

According to labeling theory, does that mean I have an excuse now?

I don't remember my parents calling me anything.

I call my daughter munchkin, she seems to like it. When I kiss her good night, she does not hear me call her my little princess.

I call my son my sack of potatoes, buddy, and potato head.

I sure hope I am not damaging them at all.

i used to get called by my sister's name a lot (that used to piss her off because she was angel child).

For a time, I thought my name was Don't Be a WiseAcre... I got called it so much.

Miss Messy seemed to be the favorite though...

My dad used to call me Bucket of Fatness. My brother was Tubs-o-lard and my sister was Pigglet. We were all skinny as rails and thought it was hilarious. No, it didn't cause any lasting damage that I'm aware of and I don't blame my father for any weight issues I have.

I call my son bubs, bud, and sugar the most. He doesn't have any unique nicknames. He actually doesn't like being called anything but his name, with the exception of previously mentioned names.

My wife calls him all sorts of things, "Monkey Butt" being the most memorable.
We both refer to him as "Small Child".
I call him "Mr. Kass" occassionally. His name is Lucas.

My dad called me "pumpkin" or "scooter"....lol. Not sure where "scooter" came from!

My bf was called "richie mudbone" b/c his mom liked Richard Pryor.

My bf and I call our son "munchkin", "lil man" or "G". His name is Giovanni.

Well, I think mine is going to have a big damaging part of her life. LoL

I call her Miss B. for I have no idea why on this one.

Runt only cause she's always been the smallest in the family, her classes and anyone else around her age. She will probably always be on the tiny side since I was.

And at times Britt-Brat when she's in her really mean, whiny and horrid stages. There's something at 10 that makes you wonder if that when they turn certain ages that they have brat tendancies. Thankfully she's never done the "lay in the floor, kicking and scremaing" in the store deals that I've came across.

Oh.. and Little Birdie. Was a trend that started after I was bitten on the hand by a cat and was proceeded to be called Miss Kitty for the rest of my life. Birdie started after we figured out that's about what she ate like. Enough to fill a bird and picky at that too!

Yep. She's going to be scarred for life and I'm the cause of it I'm sure! :)

My daughters have very ethnic names, so we have pretty easy to pronounce nicknames for them that we use. For some reason I came up with a half dozen of the corniest nicknicknames for them. I dont know how. My oldest I call her broogs a lot. On top of that I have call them the male versions of their nicknames, Leonard and Manny.

I guess Im just a big dork around my girls.

my parents always refered to me by Jake... the shorter version of Jacob (when I was bad it was Jacob)

Father appreantly called me Freddie when I was a small boy because I hated it and he liked to tease me.

Sonny Boy as a joke as well.

I have no children nor do I have an siblings with children... yet. Nor any friends with infants either.... very little procreation going on.

My family though is HUGE (I think I have like at least 100 1st cousins) and of course I cannot remember all the names... every now and then a new baby popps up.. I never see them. I don't live in the area anymore. I'm back now... family reunion in September... many forgotten names abound.

My daughter get called "baby" and "darling" by me (to the eternal destruction of my neo-feminist credentials, I suspect).

That said, I call many women "darling" (in a non-leering, post modern, ironic way, honest) once I know them well.

I have two girls. One is Bean and one is Peanut. Those are their official nicknames, not what they actually get called. Victoria get's called Vicks a lot. Mostly though, it's sweetie, baby, babycakes, babydoll, babygirl, sweetpea, princess, squirt, and occasionally rodent, weasel, or monkey-girl.

As babies and young'uns, my daughter was 'peanut' or 'monkey face'(her father's nick for her) and I called my son Sas-short for Sasquatch cuz he had such big feet. Later on, because he was so skinny, I alternated Sas with Chief Lackahiney. He kept the 'Chief' part for online stuff. His friend's dad said I should change it to 'Chumbo', but the son hated that. (supposedly that's more or less the same in spanish)
Now that they're teenagers, I just use the all-encompassing 'brat' or 'pain in my ass'. :lol:

My sister calls me bub. So do some of her friends. I have no earthly idea where that name came from, but it's stuck with me since I was born. I have no doubt that one day I'll be 'Uncle Bub.' My parents usually go by Jonathan or my whole name depending on the situation.

I call my 16 year old daughter mostly just Laura, her name. But growing up I called her punkin' because when she was a baby, when she ate pumpkin her skin turned bright orange. No shit!

Her mom calls her sweet pickle, sweet pea, sugar, peanut & sugar boogger.

I call my 3 year old boy pumpkin or buddyboy; my wife calls him babydoll.

My sister's kids have some fun nicknames:

and about a zillion other nicknames that come and go from week to week. So much fun.

Wow, that was funny. My father called me bud, buddy, and other cliche things. Mother called me Bud and Tater (which is close to Taylor; my name. And my sister [my fathers daughter] now calls me). Step father called me Partner.

Other then that I've had nicknames like Sailor, Muffin, Snowflake (won't explain that one), Sammy, Sweetie McHeart. They are all pretty typical and strange at the same time... like childhood itself I guess.

Currently any of: princess, pumpkin (she was born on Halloween), monkey, mini-moose, sweetie, Best Girl, superstar, or her name, Katherine.

I call my son, Monkey or Monkey Boy. I have also been known to call him Freakazoid (and even sing the theme song to the animated series of the same name).

I call my daughter, Z (pronounced Zee like they do in the US) or ZZ. I have also called her baby from time to time.


My wife calls my son, Stinky, Stink or sometimes Stinkman.

In tender moments, it always seems to be "Sweet ____" -- Sweetheart, Sweet Pea, Sweet Potato, etc.

I call my kids "you monkeys" when they are together, and very rarely "Monkey" singular. Usually I just call them by their given names.

I don't remember being called anything other than my name (or a few choice curse words on occassion) as a child.

My kids have pretty "normal" names (possibly because I don't!), but do NOT like the shortened versions. David hates to be called Dave or Davy, for instance. I've called him butthead a couple of times lately. ;-) Brian was Bri sometimes until he protested that he hated it. Michael (who can't stand Mike or Mikey) has always been Stinky Face. Probably because the book came out when he was little and has always been one of his favorites. ("I love you, Stinky Face" by Lisa Mccourt)

All three of my boys have been "Boy" too, or "Baby Boy" or collectively the Boybarians. That started when the doctor first said, "It's Boy" instead of "it's A boy" for David's ultrasound. The nurse was so tickled she actually put that on the printable pictures: Boy Morris instead of Morris boy.

Our baby girl is Baby Girl a lot. Angelina becomes Lina or Angel usually, with a few Miss Thang, Diva, and simply Baby. I've called all of them Peanut in utero before they were named. And we've both called all of them little bug or my bug or baby bug when they're brand new.

I don't think they mind their nicknames. In fact, some of the foster children we've kept have wanted nicknames too - they feel left out. I'll read "I Love You, Stinky Face" to a whole group of kids and my kids will proudly proclaim with pride that THEY are the big, scary ape, the slimey swamp creature, and Stinky Face, respectively. They'll speculate on which monster Lina will be (She's still too young to have earned a Stinky Face monster.), make their suggestions, then the foster children will pick which ones they want me to call them. It's cute. :-) It provides them with a sense of belonging, of family solidarity, and an inside joke to boot. It's a really special moment to be able to trade secretive smiles with my 3yr old when I call him Stinky Face in a store. I'll say, "Sit in the buggy or you're going to fall and get hurt, Stinky Face." Or "Stinky Face, if you run away again you'll have to ride in the buggy." He'll grin back at me and say something like "I love you too, Mommy."

Mojodragon calls all the kids the same nicknames I do, except the Stinky Face ones. He has a few extras for Angel. He'll call her Daddy's Girl, Daddy's Angel, Angel Eyes, Princess, etc...

I call my son "focker" or "pinche guero" (damn white boy). But most of the time I call him Will or Willard. His real name is William.

My daughter I call Dee which is short for Denise. On occasion I may call her "flaca" whichi is spanish for skinny.

Growing up i was just called derivatives of my real name. I have so many aliases it's not funny :lol:

Call me crazy, but this pretty much sums me up too. Don't the rest of you like the names you gave them in the first place? ;)

Dad calls me Punkin or Peanut. Mum calls me Bear or Bella. Little brother is Boom to them, Bitty Brubber or Duphlo to me.

I don't know if these names have any effect on us, but it's interesting to think about. Do kids really act differently if you call them monkey or princess? I have a feeling it may a little, but not enough to really matter, unless teh kid hates the name.

One in a while we call her punkin, sweetheart, babe, or hubbies favorite when she was an infant - critter. Just lately she said "I don't want to be called punkin, sweetheart, critter. I want to be called Princess Cupcake."

I call her by her own name most but those are the names I call her when I'm snuggling or she's being sweet.

Never really had a nickname. I call myself El Manny everywhere except on this forum, since Manny is my real name, and I've been given other random stupid nicknames by my friends, such as Manz0rs and Man Whores, but that's about it. My friend's dad calls him and one of his brothers "gordo", which is Spanish for "fat one". I have always been big on giving my friends random nicknames. My old friend Randall, from elementary, was Randolius, my old friend Mike was Sir Miker, Smiker, and Mik. My best bud Steve goes by n00b, n00b-style, n00bewlio, statue of n00berty, shadow of the n00bossus, colossal n00b, n00blet, Stevo, Stebe, Cochina, and The Official Cochina. My friend Juan Carlos always uses the online nickname of Forbiden (intentionally misspelled), so I call him Forb-desu (long story) and El Gran Forbo. My friend Luigi goes by "Lu" (pronouced as Lou). Steve's brother Andy gets called Andross by me a lot, so he calls me Mannos, and Steve's other brother Adrian gets called Jotis (it's a "pet" way of saying "fag" in Spanish... it's weird and I didn't invent it, I just use it because it sounds funny). I also like to add "-person" or "-face" to some of my friend's names, like my friend David-person.

I just remembered my brother's nicknames that I've given them. I call my brother Alan, "Smellin'" since "Alan" is pronounced like "Alin", and to be more retarded, instead of calling him Smellin', I call him Smell Iniside, and to be insanely retarded I (very rarely) call him Smell Inside Your Own Ass. I also call him Alint, since it sounds similar to "a lint". My brother Dolan gets called a lot of random crap by me, such as Dolint, Dolif, Doloon, an infinite number of retarded variations,

My stepson gets called either by his name, first syllable of his name, "sport," or "big-guy"

It's not that I don't like the names I gave them. (Even my adopted daughter, whom I didn't name.) And I do call them by their given names 90% of the time. But there's that other 10%... being silly, being sweet, cuddling, or just to tease when we're playing. They seem to like it. Things like "little bug" when cuddling my newborn infant just came naturally. And I don't actually baby talk my kids - I've always spoken to them the way I'd hope they'd learn to speak. However, holding them close and snuggling just seems to be the right time to say something like, "I love you, Stinky Face". :icare:

What makes us call anyone by a pet name? It's not just our kids, it's our lovers and sometimes friends too. My husband calls me "Dear" so much that my 3yr old thought it was my name. :lol:

My son's name is unique enough that he doesn't need to use a last name, of course I like his given name. I use the given name almost always.

His nicknames are just that... nicknames. They are cute or cool names that show affection and familiarity.

Maybe you don't like you kids enough to give them a nickname? :lol:

I call my oldest daughter wacker. When she was six I started calling her Ashwacker and since dropped the Ash. I don't know why I call her that but it has stuck and alot of people call her that.

I call my younger daughter Kay or KJ and sometimes Kalea Her name is Kaila.

My 10 year old we call Kodeman or kooey. His name is Kody.

My 3 year old we call buddy or little man. When we are teasing him we will call him Jake, Jack, Ralph, George, Fred because he always say "Me not Jack, Me Lucas." My husbands favorite for him is Lucas Squarepants. He is very possessive of his name and insists on being called Lucas.

I have a four-year-old girl: Abigail. I'm a big fan of nicknames. I call my wife Scriddle or Scriddle-scray. My daughter became Abigribble or Abiscribble. Now we call her The Gribbler or just Scribbler. My wife prefers Scribbler.

My daughter and I have started a "scary" movie called "The Gribbler" which features her terrorizing my wife as often as I can get the camera. These will be the memories that she has; none of that baby stuff. Weird soundtracks and special FX ...

Supergirl, sweetie, *her name*, and peanut butter are the main nicknames.

My best friend was called "dammit" so often she said that was her name in 1st grade... oopsies
