TFP: Help Name My Unborn Child...

My wife and I are sort of going back and forth with these two names and their combinations and just not sure which one we like best...

So I thought I'd come here and ask you all!

Notice their isn't a "I don't like either of them" option. Just looking for a basic opinion...

Wouldn't it be neat to say that TFP helped name my child? I think so.

The_Jazz 02-02-2006 12:41 PM

Congratulations! My wife and I are due on Monday 2/6 but we didn't peak. Unfortunately, I've been impeached off the Naming Committed for coming up with inappropriate names, so you may want to disregard my vote, which was for Ava.

Good luck!

Charlatan 02-02-2006 12:42 PM

I like the name Ava... I'd call her Ava Marlee, where Marlee is her middle name. Call her Ava most days and Ava Marlee when you're pissed.

maleficent 02-02-2006 12:47 PM

As someone who has two first names for their first name- I wouldn't ever do that to another person... No school I attended could ever get it right - they insisted my name was something other than it was - -and i used to get in trouble for not answering to jsut plain Mary.- when it wasn't... (it was legally changed in high school so that it was one word...)

Ava is pretty - and different enough without being weird.. it's also a name you can be an adult with... Marlee is pretty, but i'd like it as a middle name.. .Ava Marlee as a first name is nice... but don't do that to a child... Please..

I chose Ava, but not only because I think it's the prettiest. I grew up in a town named Ava (upstate NY, spelled the exact same way!).

In my family, they never gave anyone middle names unless there was a reason for it (i.e. my brother's middle name is for my dead grandfather), so I would just have a plain first name. And no one can shorten it to a silly nickname!

Ava is an awesome name.

Cynthetiq 02-02-2006 02:08 PM

I can see people singing "Ava Marlee-ah....." all the time.

personally don't care for either, since none of the name can be found on any souvenier gift items, not even in a different spelling. at least have a common name so that they can feel "included"

.

Goodness gracious you are correct sir...

now that's just a mean thing to do to a child... :)

Derwood 02-02-2006 02:17 PM

Ava is nice (depending on your last name). Marlee does nothing for me personally

Daoust 02-02-2006 06:29 PM

Ava would be the first name and Marlee would be her middle name. It wouldn't be joined together like BobbySue or LaurieAnn.

Wow. The results really surprised me. I hope to get lots more responses, so I'll give this thread a bump...

I much prefer Ava.

I like Ava too. Very pretty name. :D

typette 02-04-2006 05:37 PM

Anyone watch Nip/Tuck? That rules out Ava for me.

We just found out we're expecting, so I'm glad to see that if we get stuck for ideas there's help!

Daoust 02-06-2006 01:50 PM

BUMP!

Keep voting! Even though I sort of already know where it's going.

shesus 02-19-2006 05:49 PM

I voted for Ava. Marlee is ok, but Karlee is better. Not an option I know. ;)

And as a school teacher, I thank you for choosing a short name that will be easy for the kid to spell. You don't know how many kids have very long and strange spelled name. Simple is better. Another plus, is that she wouldn't have a nickname.

Congrats again on the up-coming arrival of beautiful Ava or Marlee or a combination of them both. :)

ratbastid 02-19-2006 05:53 PM

In high school I was totally in love with one of my best friends who was named Ava. I have very, very good associations with that name. Hence my vote.

Daoust 02-19-2006 06:00 PM

hey, thanks for the info, both of you... Because of this thread I've been won over to Ava, but my wife is still clinging to Marlee. But you make a really good point about Ava not having any nicknames...

As for Karlee, we're both school teachers Shesus, and don't you find that girls names with K are a little overdone lately??? In my elementary school I found htere were so many Kaylees and Kirstens and Keira's... Time for a new letter...

Thanks all for your votes, shesus and ratbastid.

1010011010 02-19-2006 06:15 PM

I voted Ava by process of elimination.

What put me off of "Marlee" was the non-standard spelling more than anything else.

Brewmaniac 02-19-2006 06:53 PM

I voted Marlee but Ava is nice too!

Supple Cow 02-19-2006 07:12 PM

Ava really is a beautiful name. I'm not terribly fond of Marlee just because it reminds me of all the Marlas I've known in my life, who were all such wet blankets. Also, when the name game comes around, the words "barley" and "farley" are going to be involved. :\

Good luck coming to a consensus!

Oh yes, I forgot about the over-abundance of K names. Teaching where I teach we get more ethnic names (ie Marquita, Shaquita, Raheem, etc.) and Da...names like DaeShawn, Demarcus, etc. But yes, I remember the Kaylees and Kimberlys and Kaylas. Point taken although I still like Karlee. :(

cellophanedeity 02-19-2006 09:55 PM

Ava is a very pretty name. Sounds close to what I'd like to name a daughter if I ever have one. :)

Funny you should mention those names, because Marquita and Shaquita were our third and fourth choices for our white anglo saxon daughter to be... :p

hehe...I was wondering when I was writing that. After I posted I was like...oh no, but I have seen a difference in names teaching in various areas. However, names don't have boundaries really. When we were thinking of having kids, we've sinced changed our minds, I was thinking Giovana for a girl. We aren't Italian, but I love the name. Just looking at the name almost makes me want to change my mind, but no, raising my teenage step-daughter is enough. :p

I had a friend named Lachelle growing up and her sister was Raquelle. People expected them to be black. Names are funny things.
