Weirdness in TFP land or in my mind........

In the process of editing my information here (changing my e-mail address and adding Yahoo messenger handle), I noticed I had been subscribed to threads I either never have been to or haven't been to in a very long time. And posts I was subscribed to were no longer listed.

Then I noticed that my signature had gone from having JIMMY BUFFETT spelled that way to "JUMMY BUFFETT" (And I am very anal about spelling .... as you can tell by my posts, I edit them...... every time I see I made a mistake.... I can't believe I haven't noticed the "JUMMY BUFFETT" sooner.

I admit those seem small.... but now I am wondering if someone is in my account or if I am losing it?

And why would someone want into my account and change things?

Hmmmmmmm..... am I paranoid or are "they" out to get me...... whoever the Hell "they" are and why would "they" come after me? Why would "They" leave such obvious things for me to find?

Unless of course "they" want me to know "they" are after me, to see how I would react............

bwahhahhahahahahaha I am losing it...... and this is clean and sober..... and the above is dead serious which makes me think I may need a jacket to hug myself and rooms that have nice soft walls and a station wagon with a wailing woman sound and a revolving cherry on top to take me there......

Of course "they" could be my ex-wife playing mind games..... the bitch.... or I could just be going crazy and have snapped under all the problems and stress I've had lately....... or I could just need laid.

Stay out of your account for a week, and see if there are any login's recorded or something? But if someone is using your account and they read this they will not log in to foil my plan!

See "They", whoever "they" are now know I am onto them...... And how do I know that one of you posters aren't one of "them"?

But the question remains..... why would "they" be after me?

To be honest I always thought paranoid delusions were just egos gone awry because the people who had them believed the world couldn't function without them.......

See paranoia is where you THINK someone is out after you.... I KNOW someone is after me...... but the question is why......

Our task now is to find out what pan6467 knew that necessitated him being moved to... The Island and to attempt to free him. It's a dangerous job. And actually I hear that... The Island actually isn't such a bad place to be. And nobody likes danger.

Yeah, on second thought we'll leave him to it, I'm sure he doesn't need our help.

Seriously dude, why would someone break into your account to change 'Jimmy' to 'Jummy'?

I joke because it seems so stupid and because I don't want to sound too crazy..... but I really am concerned.

I know it seems little and wouldn't mean much but this has me truly wondering.

I mean subscriptions to threads I swear to God I never have been in or knew existed...... and now I am thinking about the other weirdnesses on my puter.

Like now I'm finding pictures in my computer that I have never seen, e-mail coming in from people I never met who talk to me like I'm an old friend, people on my messenger (Yahoo who IM me even though they I have no idea who they are and they aren't spammers...) and when I talk to these people I get like a hi response and they may say 1 or 2 things then say "oops sorry wrong person" and that's it..... then a day or 2 later comeback and do the same thing.....

This all started about 2 weeks ago when my computer crashed and I had to reload everything...... I thought it was a virus but now I wonder if someone in my apt. complex or somewhere tapped into me.

My computer's history has sites I've never been to.

People are saying they said hi to me and that I was logged in when I haven't been.

If I didn't know better I'd swear someone was using my computer when I wasn't here. Or the ex wife is trying to fuck with me.

Am I paranoid or do I have reason to be?

I mean it's not like my CC or bank account has money disappearing or that I'm getting things I didn't order or such things.

I just haven't said anything before because I don't want people thinking I've lost it

There are various funny things that happen to a person's title at certain intervals... and pretty much no one but Halx even knows what they all are, because he manually coded them all in himself. The "evil" thing is one that I know of already.

And I guess in all the confusion, you didn't actually fix your sig, because it still says JUMMY.

I know this sounds crazy...... but it's scaring the fuck out of me now, I'm either cracking up or someone is truly pushing my buttons.

looks as though someone has hacked your account (possibly by accessing your PC first).
Could someone log in from a second PC using the stolen password, and then not log out (so password changes will not affect them)?

It must be a serious hack if everything is done from your PC (by local or remote access). Someone would have to go through a lot of trouble to record changes and change everything back when you're away.

The question to all this would be why?

I don't hurt anyone, I mind my business, I just do not understand why anyone would do this to me.

If I knew some big corporate secrets or if I had pissed off the right people I may understand, but I'm just a drug counselor/student, who as far as I know has no enemies.

Weird...... scary and unbelieveable.

My Advice:

If you can change your password from a different computer, do that.

I'm assuming you're on Windows for the rest.

Download Zonealarm. Google it. It's a free little firewall that might help you out.
Turn on your OS's firewall.
Download Spybot S&D and Adaware. Google them, or try download.com
Update your Antivirus.
Run scans with all those programs.

Try disconnecting your computer from the internet and reconnecting whenever you need it. If actually shutting down your computer is gonna help, do it.

I'm sure I've got more ideas... PM me if you need any help.

Editing to add... You didn't have to have pissed anyone off neccesarily to have instigated this, if it's a hack. It may be random and just for kicks.

I downloaded Zone Alert when the computer crashed a couple weeks ago and I love it.

I do have a question, is it possible the crash was someone jumping in so that when I did get ZA they were already in so it wouldn't show?

(My crash was: the screen went black and when I would reboot it would go through the opening info then go black like Win.XP wasn't loading or working .... so I just reloaded my XP, that's all I did not sure if I corrected anything or just left everything that had been there in the memory as I do know my memory has dropped by about 5-6%, yet nothing shows up on my virus, spyware and adware scans.)

Ok so I went to turn off my puter as I was leaving to go out to eat and ZA comes out and says there is an access on my computer and I can name the network along with 2 choices I can't remember them.... I ended up locking the internet because my computer would not shut down.

Is there anyone (RoadRunner) I can call and have them check me out before I wipe my computer clean?

And will wiping it clean help, if they are already on my IP and whatnot?

The odd thing is shortly before I tried to logout and turn it off my ex-wife came online (we're still on each other's Yahoo IM's.......) I seriously doubt she would do it, but I don't think I know her as well as I thought.

The people above me, in my apt. complex I'm pretty sure are drug dealers or meth cookers and maybe they are doing this, I just don't know who to trust or what to do anymore.

Someone please HELP

Pan, my 2 cents:

This is a practical joke played on you by another TFP member, or a friend who is familiar with your TFP use. It's unlikely that some random person has accessed your computer in the first place, and if they did, why on earth would they edit your TFP profile? So in my opinion there's nothing to worry about, this is just somebody playing a harmless practical joke.

So it comes down to, who would be able to edit your profile? Here are the possibilities:

-- a TFP moderator
-- a TFP member who is an experienced hacker who managed to hack his way onto the TFP server
-- an acquaintance of yours who is familiar with your TFP interest and who watched you log on, or has access to your computer

If I were you, I'd be racking my brain trying to think of a reason anybody would be wanting to play a practical joke on me, someone who is familiar with TFP and knows me either personally or through my TFP posts.

If the person did not know you fairly well, then they would probably be doing this to other members also. If it's not someone you know physically, then it's probably a TFP member that you've interacted with a lot.

In any case I don't think it's something to worry about, in terms of any kind of harm.

Glad someone is getting a laugh out of it.

I have tried ZA, Spybot, Adware and several other things and so far it seems better. I even took it into the UofA computer center and they couldn't really find anything wrong, a few viruses but nothing that would say for sure I was compromised.

Maybe I was just paranoid, and maybe someone in TFP land was just messing with my head and changing "Jimmy" to "Jummy" (which as soon as I post this I am changing back). And maybe someone knew my Yahoo password and just signed onto theirs using my name and password to screw with me.

Maybe a lot of things.... but the biggest and scariest thing is the fact that ZA came out with one of those warnings as I was turning off saying it had detected another user computer on me and did I want to add it to my network...... or something to that effect. That I wish I could have copied or pictured so that everyone could see what I am talking about, and maybe explain to me that it wasn't serious.

pan, it sounds like someone has installed a "rootkit" on your machine and is messing with you.

I would guess that it is all for a lark. But you sound pretty nervous about it.

Here is what I would suggest you do:

Download knoppix, burn the CD and run it, at least for a day or two. Knoppix is a CD-based linux distribution (meaning, that if you have someone who has remote access to your computer, their access methods won't work under linux), it won't write anything to your hard drive, or make you lose any data. Setup a new webmail account (with a new and unique password), login to TFP, and have it change the email address to that new webmail account, then change your TFP password, and use the password that you just got at that new webmail account. If you have TFP problems beyond that... there are bigger forces at work here.

Yeah, I was thinking about "who has access to the email account you signed up with / use?" All they would have to do is request a TFP password change, then reset it to whatever it was originally, but now they have your password. They then proceed to Jummy your ass straight to loony bin.

Akron U and RR are me, Stark Library is the only other possibility. I have no idea what sssnet nor *.oh.us is. I only access from here or home (the SCL may have been when I moved and didn't have access for a couple days).

Thanks Mr. I truly appreciate the help.
