Project Lunatic Fringe
Now we have all seen those online type of quizzes where its ‘how perverted are you’ or the like. Well all the talk about the lunatic fringe here lately got me thinking. Does the lunatic fringe know they are part of the lunatic fringe? Are you part of it? Am I? What might seem perfectly reasonable to one person may be far off wacky land to almost everyone else. I think for fun we could create something of a tool for measuring your lunatic fringes so to speak.
While there will be most definitely left and right questions on the lunatic fringe scale ™, that does not mean that the lunatic fringe test should focus on any one side. Somewhere out there is someone who believes the fringe tails on both sides and we wouldn’t want to discriminate. Now as for how the questions should be scored is where it’s a bit subjective. Take for example the JFK assassination. I am not an expert on all the theories about this, but in the last year I’ve seen documentaries claiming it was the Cubans, gangsters, or even LBJ who set it up. As such, someone who believed that Kennedy was killed by LBJ would have a bit less of a score on the fringe side, than someone who thought 9/11 was a set up by President Bush at the order of the free Masons. Some questions could be simple grasp of reality type questions like, ‘Does taxation effect economic growth?’ while others could be more complex issues like ‘The reason for the Ruby Ridge incident was?’ with a corresponding ABCD, with each answer being a little more nutty. Now I’m not an expert on every aspect of the fringes, I don’t know all the websites, I know a few, but I’m sure we have all run into one (or perhaps saw it on somethingawful.com) or two and can find even more. This could be something of a group project for TFP politics, and it won’t be compiled overnight. The merits of the ‘fringiness’ can be discussed but only so far is if it’s a good question, or the scoring for it. This isn’t a quest for the truth so to speak, after all some fringe theory may well be true, but for things where the evidence does not compute and are generally rejected by most people informed on the issues. Questions could also be non-political as well. UFO’s, Ghosts, etc are all ripe with potential as questions. Questions should be submitted in a multiple choice or true or false manner. All fringe values should be on a sliding (and therefore subjective) scale of 1-10. For example. True or false: Aliens from another world crash landed at Roswell New Mexico and alien bodies were collected. False = 0 True = 5 Now there is a lot of evidence for what really happened, from samples on down, but because of the hype a lot of people will think its true anyways, so this would only be a moderate score for true. Scale can be determined after questions have been collected. So what do you say? Lets try something a bit different.
