My dad said he was listening to a radio show the other night (not sure what show it was) and there was a guy on there says that he knows for sure that there is an asteroid headed our way that will impact Earth in September of this year. He says that it will kill 80-90% of the population of the world. Apparently this guy thinks that our government knows about this, they just aren't telling anyone.

I'm not saying I believe this is true. I'm just curious if anyone else has heard of this.

Oh, there's an asteroid coming, eventually. But I doubt that this guy knows much of anything.

We've had three separate meteor/asteroid events in the last 100 years that might have caused terrible devastation in a 10-15 mile region if anybody had lived around there -- the midair explosion of what was probably a dead comet over Siberia in the early 1900s, a rock of apparently several hundred feet in diameter that came down deep in the South American jungle in the '30s, and a pretty-good-size rock that hit Greenland several years ago. In all cases, the strike was so remote that nobody was around at the time or was ever able to get there. The South American strike is only known because a lot of people saw a fireball coming down, but nobody ever saw it strike or found the crater. It was out in the jungle somewhere where nobody lived (nobody who sent out messages, anyway) and probably was overgrown in a few years. Nobody ever got to the site of the Greenland strike, either. An expedition tried, but failed.

But if any of those strikes had been in a major metro area, millions might have been killed. And an ocean strike of a 2-300 foot rock could really sweep clean adjacent coastlines. I've read that a 1000-foot rock coming down in the Pacific would generate tidal waves that would reach 1000-1500 feet at the shoreline....

...and scientists believe that 1 to 3 rocks in the 100-to-1000-foot size range hit earth every century. Just a matter of time.

Im almost positive your father was listening to Coast to Coast hosted by George Noory. It was Art Bells show (which he takes over on the weekends) sometimes the subject matter is extremely interesting sometimes a little over the top: like an XFiles episode. Depending on the credientials of the guest is what will make it interesting. The guest will always have a link on the site so you can go back and check out past shows www.coasttocoastam.com

This same shit was in a Maxim magazine earlier this year. It got me thinking. If there were some meteor / asteroid shit heading to earth that would / will kill 80-90% of the population, I'll bet anything that the government is working something up to destroy it before it destroys us. And if it is true and there is nothing that can be done, so be it. If it is fake, then .. yea.

Well, we're currently in the middle of a 6th mass extinction. All mass extinctions end with some huge cataclysmic event. Eventually that cataclysmic event is going to occur, and it's widely believed it will be a massive asteroid.

This is on CNN today. The exact same article that tecoyah has posted a link for. It looks like its going to be a near miss. If this really were going to hit I think it would be more well known and there would be a lot more going on about it. Perhaps there is a government cover up, but I think that if this really were actually going to make contact that it would be a much bigger story.

I tend to think of it this way. If there really was an asteroid headed towards earth, I wouldn't be relying on the gov't to tell me about it, rather the backyard astronomers who are constantly scanning the skies as a hobby. They cover more of the sky each night than NASA ever will, so I'm sure we'd hear about it from them.

That article looks like they are taking the general asteroid threat seriously, as they should. It is a very real threat. But as for this one coming in September I can only go with the given information. The general consenus seems to be that it will be a near miss. I do agree that there would problably be every space program out there raising alarms if this could be something more.
