scissors

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - A Sydney woman demanded an explanation Tuesday from a hospital where a pair of scissors were left in her abdomen after surgery and said she planned to sue.

Pat Skinner, 69, had part of her colon removed at Sydney's St. George Hospital in May 2001. But she said that she continued to suffer intense pain in her abdomen for months after the operation.

Eventually, she demanded doctors x-ray her abdomen. They did and discovered the 6.7-inch pair of scissors, which were removed in October 2002.

"It was like a nightmare seeing those scissors up on the screen," Skinner told Sky News television Tuesday. "It was very, very traumatic and extremely painful."

The hospital has apologized to Skinner for the accident, but Tuesday she said plans to take legal action, although she did not provide any details.

A hospital spokeswoman told The Associated Press that lawyers for both sides were currently meeting and discussing the matter.

The incident was reported to the Health Care Complaints Commission, but no disciplinary action was taken against the surgeon or the four other staffers who operated on Skinner, said the hospital's chief executive, David Pearce.

"Basically, the advice to ... Mrs. Skinner is that we couldn't explain how a pair of 6.7-inch scissors was left in her abdomen," Pearce told Sydney radio station 2GB Tuesday.

"We have put this down to human error. I've been executive director here for four years, and in that time we've done something like 40,000 operations and this is the first time this incident has occurred."

I do! Information can make us smarter consumers. Personally, I would avoid this doctor (and/or hospital) if I knew of this kind of lazy-ass procedure!

Arm yourself!

Crazy

The thing that gets me is that the doctor and the hospital have refused to actually acknowledge the error and apologise. This whole business of going through lawyers is just so impersonal, and so irresponsible.
Is "sorry" really so hard to say nowadays?

Yes, it actually is. The cost of malpractice insurance for doctors is sky-high right now, and for good reason (this being one of them.) Any lawyer representing a doc with this problem would liklely want you to be able to continue your craft (yeah right....) so apologizing is admitting to the, uhm, crime. Don't admit and force the accusor to prove it. If they do prove it, settle out of court. yeah. It blows.

you know this is one of the cases that should and has to be filled for malpractice but the true cases are not the ones that are making the insurence so high

or even worse...their are stories of crazy consequences from stuff left in the body. i read one story where a clamp was left inside this one guy's body. after a month or so, he went back to the hospital where they found that bacteria had started growing where the clamp was and was slowly eating his insides. he went on a shitload of antibiodics and stuff and ended up with pretty bad abdominal scars.

The best surgery to have is the one you never have. It's just not safe.
