Weird Dreams?

I have a recurring dream that my teeth are falling out. My gf bought me a 'dream interpretation' book authored by Freud and I'm a little paranoid about the meaning of this recurring dream after reading this book. According to Freud, this dream (teeth falling out) means that I'm going to lose something very dear to me in the near future. Huh?

That's a very vague prediction. Very dear? Near future? Could be anything.

If you wait long enough, of course it will come true. It will for everyone, just ignore it and go on with your life.

Freud was obsessed with penises (peni?). I'm sure if you read further into his works, it would mean that you were afraid of losing your penis. I second sillygirl's motion. Freud's a whacko.

Lose? As in break up? she goes away for a few years? dies? Does it have to be his gf? Could be a brother, sister, mother, father, uncle... job? money? car? house? health? computer? an old, rare coin? an 8-yr old collection of belly-button lint? That last one would be really hard to replace.

All he has to do is lose anything and all of a sudden the prediction is true.

Don't read too much into these so-called predictions.

I have several dreams every few months about all my teeth falling out. I used to have braces several years ago, and after that, had to wear a retainer in the day and positioner (like a detailed mouthguard) at night. Lost the retainer awhile ago. I think the positioner is making me go crazy.

"If you dream that you are loosing your teeth, for instance, then you may be afraid of being embarrassed in a particular situation. Another explanation is that teeth represent power, as they are used for biting and tearing. Therefore, dreaming of loosing your teeth could mean that you are feeling disenfranchised. Or you could have actually lost your false ones and are worried that your bin man is going to think that you are Jeffrey Dahmer's successor… To successfully interpret your dreams, you look at what's going on in your life at that moment and make a reading based on the facts."

That's how I would always consider this. You are dreaming of teeth falling out, examine your own life and situation at the present carefully, and deduct what it *could* be. Something is causing your dream most likely, your dream isn't predicting something you have no tangible evidence of in your waking world.

And Freud was a wacko. So was Ghandi, or Picasso, or Dali, or Einstein, or ...
It's remarkable how often wackos still have valid contributions to make

The only times I've had dreams like this is when I'm going to something extremely stressful, in particular, something I could not control.

Is there anything in your life right now that you wished you could control for your own sake, but cannot? This could be the source.

I wouldn't think of dreams being prophetic most of the time. I think it's possible, but very rare.

I've had a few of those in the past... I am sure that whever I've lost by now, I have forgotten, and am none the worse off for it

IMHO dreams are nothing more or less than the brain going on "autopilot" through a train of thought. This train of thought is determined by whatever is bugging you at the moment.

You must have been concerned with, oh.. say, your teeth for instance? Your brain took that idea, and ran with it.

The simplest explanation is usually the one closest to the truth (or at least I hope so!).

I'm no dream expert, but I try to interpret my own dreams. If I had the tooth dream, I would guess it was that I could sense there was something I wanted in life, yet was unattainable. You know, like the apple is in front of you, but without teeth you can't take a bite.

Or something...

It's been a while since I've had the dream. In regards to the posts above, it's a good thing if it means I'm going to lose something precious to me. I hope it's already happened!

Dude, i've been having the same dream ever since i was like 10. I used to have it during very stressful periods in my life. I had it again last summer, every single night for a month or so. Now it stopped, but it actually feels like my teeth are falling off, or that they crumble and i pull them out. It's not like i feel the actual pain, but it's a creepy feeling.
I don't know what it means or what i should think, but everybody seems to have their own answer...that dream sucks anyway.

The biggest problem with dream prediction is that the dreaming part of your brain has no logic...therefore, nothing it creates could really happen. Or mean anything, for that matter.

I had a dream like that once or twice, when I was in the (long) process of breaking up with a woman I was living with. So I think there's something to the general sense of the symbolisms discussed above. Haven't had that dream since.

My dream was a little different, however. I dreamed I had a loose tooth. So I pulled on it and it came out. And out. And out. And out. Until I had this huge yellowed thing the size of a walrus tusk in my hand. Anyone want to take a stab at the symbolism, you're more than welcome. I haven't a clue.

On the contrary, dear Watson

Can you think of any biological drive more evolutionarily(sp?) beneficial to hand control of your whole psyche to than that of reproducing?

You might think not EVERYTHING has to do with sex, but thats only because the drive is buried under layers and layers of sociological bullshit and learned distractions. (which btw freud does take into account)

Perhaps it means that you secretly fear that Dr. Freud's teeth are falling out. And that your penisd size is inadequate to contend with a mouth that has no teeth but many lesons to share with your GF. I suggest you find Digmund's grave and drive an iron stake through his cadaverous chest, remove his corpses teeth and carry them with you the rest of your life in a red velvet bag on hyour hip. No, of course I am being very silly in a callous way and do hope you will excuse me. You have abandonment concerns, Friend. You fear that you are or could begin to lose important partsd of yourself that are rooted in who you are, quite easily, and feel this can become not only chronic, but unstoppable and fairly soon. My guess would be that you work in an environment which seems to you at least, very high profile, and toy are also feeling exposed in this job. Losing your teeth therefore would be a great blow to youboth emotionally as well as psychically and physically, It also demonstrtates the idea that you asre inded loosing pieces of yourself to a world which demands much of you and your fear of becoming toothless, speaks volumes. I would suggest a sabbatical and a real vacation where it is warm and secluded. Take no sharp objects, but bring with you things that would help you to re-learn those lessons about your manhood that were taught to you when you were younger. Fast, meditate and pray and do not return until directed to do so by The Holy Spirit.

I swear Sigmond Frued gets more beatings than that nerdy guy who smells in the playground. Lets get a few things straight.

Frued doesnt deal with future predictions. He deals almost exclusively with the past. One of the reasons why his works are criticised in academia is that he places too much emphasis on the early childhood experiences. He would never interpret your dream that something will happen in the future as it is always (in his theories anyway) your minds way of dealing with past experiences.

Frued being obsessed with sex is one of the most common misconceptions of his works. Lets look at the definition of sex in the time that he was formulating his theories. Sex and love are not seperated in those times. In present western society we talk about sex as the physical act as completely seperate from the emotional intimacy. The people of the time wouldnt of understood modern tv shows like 'sex in the city' or 'the bachelor'. When Frued used the term 'sex' he refered to emotional intimacy. With this in mind the oedipous/electra complex doesnt sound so far fetched now. When refering to the physical aspects of sex he coined the term 'adult sexuality'. If Frued refered to every boy wanting to indulge in adult sex with his mother then your current interpretations of his work would be accurate. As it so happens we cant enforce current societies definition of the word 'sex' onto Fruedian societies work.

Frueds dream interpretations rely on symbolism. His 'obsession' with the penis is due to the symbolic meaning of it. The penis is symbolic for power. Think about all the nicknames for the penis (eg purple headed warrior, thumper, Mr Big, Heavanly spearetc) or sexual intercourse from the male perspective (Pounded her, Boned her, Took her, etc). All very powerfull names. Since power is intergrated into almost everything we do then talking about the symbolism of the penis in regards to everything is prudent. Thus the reason why the penis is talked about in fruedian psychoanalysis.

A question for all you Frued bashers: If Frued was such a 'wacko' why is psychoanalysis (which he founded) still the one of the most powerfull schools of psychology in current society?

Now I will agree that Frued was a sexist bastard when it came to his works. Maybe that is another product of the time though Im not validating it. There have been other psychoanalysists such as Karen Horney who were as sexist about their theories but from the feminist perspective.

Can we all just move past the myths in order to appraise his work or him as a person. Its the age old arguement :Ad Hominum. Attrack the persons arguement by attacking the person, eg Micheal Jackson cant play music because he is a pedophile. It doesnt make sense because your using a reason to invalidate their work which has no relevance to the topic.

Whilst I personally dont agree with everything he says he definately says a heap of awsome stuff which was totally revolutionary at the time and is still the basis for modern research. Thats my two cents anyway.

ok, this has nothing to do with previous posts other than that it's a weird, recurring dream.

last sunday night, i had a dream that i was living in a large mansion in the projects of new york with my current roomate, my best friend, and my best friend's girlfriend. for some reason i had to small guns that would fit into a cigarette pack, and as we were walking down the street near our house two hoodlums tried to rob us. he shot me 6 times, and i shot him five, but neither of us were incapacitated. my friends were out of the dream from that point on, and i beat and handcuffed to a column in front of a gas station the thug that didn't shoot me. the other one was hiding in the gas station, and was brought out by police. for some reason, no one noticed my gunshot wounds, so i decided to seek medical attention. i walked to the hospital, which was this huge maze of a building, and went in every entrance i could find, but was always directed to continue around the building to the next entrance, that there was a special ward for gunshot wounds. after going in every entrance to the hospital, and recieving no help whatsoever, i finally collapsed in the street thinking "i'm going to bleed to death and no one gives a damn!" i always wake up covered in sweat at this point, and i've had the dream 4 or 5 times in the last 9 days. what the hell is wrong with me?!?

I had a dream last night that this evil spirit was coming to burn up unpure souls and I felt the burning in my hands and since I knew (don't know why) that I was pure I blew on my hands to the person next to me and then it went from that person to the next person and they burst into flames. A being came and collected their soul from the burning body that was still sitting in the restaurant booth. Freaky.

Bacon_masta, it seems you need help and are looking in all the wrong places to get it. The people around you that you would think would notice you are hurt and wounded and bleeding aren't noticing and all the conventional ideas that have occurred to you for seeking help lead you nowhere. Take note: Your wounds aren't physical, they are spiritual and you are looking in the wrong place to receive healing. It sounds more like you seek forgiveness. You know exactly where to find that. Seek out the Lord.

Thats crazy, because lately, ive been having that dream too. Its like my teeth are sore and hurt. What i do is, is clench them. Then the top row stick to the bottom row, so i try to open my mouth. When my mouth gets unstuck and opens, a couple of random teeth rip out. And i do this process, until all of them are gone. I swear, the dream is soo vivid, and i wake up making sure they are still there. When i find out i still have them, i get all happy and excited, because i really think for a second, that i really lost them, crazy...........

and if i remember right, and someone please correct me if i'm wrong, according to freud, snakes in dreams have some semblance to penis'. besides that, the dream just freaked me out reguardless.

The other night I had a dream, that my sister and I where in the jungle; and we where swinging through the trees along side some monkeys. We get to one tree and at the bottom of it there is what appears to be a white bear. My sister thought it was a white crane. So we slide down the tree, and it's a white bear cub. Then we are back in the city, with the bear cub, taking it to the vet because it's sick. The bear cub wakes up in the middle of surgery, and bites off some of my sisters fingers. We are walking away from the vet, and she is telling me how she doesn't mind, as blood is still streaming down her hands...

Very weird I still remember it vividly.

Maybe it had to do with the full moon that night.
