Clovis man revives after being declared dead, but later dies

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) — A man who was declared dead at a Clovis hospital and sent to a funeral home began breathing as workers prepared to embalm him, the owner of the funeral home said.

Felipe Padilla, 94, of Clovis stopped breathing Wednesday morning and was sent to Muffley Funeral Home.

An employee of the funeral home called 911 a short time later when he realized Padilla was breathing.

"We didn't even have to do CPR. He was breathing on his own," funeral home owner Russell Muffley said.

Paramedics hooked Padilla to IVs and a respirator and returned him to the hospital where he died a short time later, according to the funeral home.

Efforts to contact Padilla's family were unsuccessful.

Plains Regional Medical Center administrator Brian Bentley said patient confidentiality rules prevented him from making detailed comments on the situation.

"At this point I haven't talked to the family, so I can't say how they feel," he said Wednesday.

Muffley said Padilla was in a preparation room at the funeral home when "he took a breath."

"I've been doing this 39 years and it's never happened before," Muffley said.

Bentley said that while the Padilla case is unusual, it's not unheard of for someone who is declared dead to later be revived.

"I think that this is much more interesting to news people than it is to people in the hospital," Bentley said. "I think medical people recognize that things are not always black and white."

I used to always want to be a coroner or something of the sort, but stories like this always scare me off

My grandpa 'died' for a few seconds when he was really sick, and claims that he saw a bright white light, but he probably just was staring into the overhead lights

I remember seeing some educational show regarding embalming. Apparently before embalming became a standard burial practice people were occasionally buried alive. They knew it was happening because when corpses were exhumed scratch marks were found inside the coffin. Talk about having a bad day.

Hahaha. Sorry pal, but that is an urban myth busted by the Myth Busters on the Discovery Channel. They would die of asphyxiation under an hour, even if they were alive, and not even a really well-built coffin can stand up to the tons of pressure of dirt. It was actually surprising. Being buried alive would kill them.

Wow...creepy. Kinda scary to think that the hostpital could send me away to get embalmbed without a thourough checking of my dead-ness.

That is cool. It kinda reminds something I learned about Wakes. When someone die they preformed the wake where they would lay the person on the table and pretty much see if they WOULD wake up. The reasons for this were years and years ago people would drink so much that their heartrate and body temperature would drop so low that it was undetectible on whether they were actually dead. So rather then taking a chance on burying someone alive they would lay them out for 24 hours to make sure they are dead. Shocker was there were a few times that people did sit up.

I heard the reason they'd be passed out was because of the whiskey leaching enough of the lead out of those old mugs to just knock you out for a couple days.
