Do you think it is the REAL Saddam that was captured?
 

I heard the news of Saddam's capture this morning when I got up and checked the news. Do you think its for real? The news was claiming they were keeping it quiet until they had DNA evidence of his identity.

Am I, and I'm assuming millions of others across the world, just paranoid, or do you think that our government has made it obvious through history that they are not to be trusted?

Not one bit. I will be the first to admit that I have a hard time believing anything this administration tells me. I guess I'm not a very good American. There are just way too many sketchy things we've been told in the last two years to not be skeptical. I wouldn't be surprised if they "found" Bin Laden very close to the time of election next year, either.

Yeah, no shit. I don't know that I believe it either.... it seems too much like a "Look what I did! will you like me again?" kind of thing...

Of course the gov't is not to be trusted, however, in the absence of proof their assertions must be given the benefit of the doubt. To do otherwise is to court true paranoia.

Do I think that they have the real Saddam Hussein? I have to reserve judgement for about a week while they put together some confirmation and the press has had a chance to pick it to pieces.

Given the kid glove treatment the mainstream press has been giving the Bush Bund since 9/11, I will lend much more creedence to the far left media on this topic than I would otherwise, and given the worshipful cover the conservative media has given Governor Bush, I will not consider them purveyors of journalism in this matter.

I do agree that this capture comes at a convenient time for the current administration. I think it is possible that Hussein's whereabouts may have been quite well known for a while now, and that his capture may have been stage managed. However, that this happened late on a Friday tends to argue against media manipulation. Karl Rove is too slick a customer to not have this be the first thing heard on a Monday morning if he had his way.

The timing of any WMDs found or the capture of Bin Laden will definitely factor into my descision to believe or doubt this.

Let's also see how long it takes Al-Jazeera to put a Saddam Hussein on the air. I wouldn't believe that either, but the speed with which they do it will say something about the likelihood of the one currently in custody being the genuine article.

I am sceptical about this, it could easily be faked, but I will give them a chance to prove that they are truthful about it. I agree with Tophat in that if they find WMD's or Osama at a convenient time, I will be more than a little sceptical.

It'll be skeptical to a lot of people no matter what. No matter what they find or when they find it. Its difficult to know the truth.

They had his DNA to begin with and I'm fairly sure that was one of the first things they did when they got him in custody. It's him.

i fell asleep watching the breaking coverage on sunday, and it was a dream about some dude that was a friend of my dads. he came into our house and started to tell us how it's a conspiracy, and that we have no proof... that's how far my paranoia has gone. i thought about it after that, and the videos were enough for me... I trust this.

I disagree with your reasoning. If you were Saddam, what better way to escape freely than by remaining hidden after the whole world thinks you've been caught?

However, I concur that this is not a fake. There's as yet absolutely no evidence to suggest otherwise. They got him.

If they wanted to lie and say they caught him when it was someone else, they aren't going to come out and say "nope... DNA testing says its not him, sorry."

If this was meant to be fake, they are going to mold the story to fit what they want us to believe.

However, I do believe this is real; I have no reason not to as of yet, I just wanted to state that the DNA testing isn't any more proof than thier word that its him.

I think it's real, but I heard an interesting theory that they have always had Saddam Hussein in captivity but that they kept it a secret so that Bush could have an excuse to bomb Iraq. What will these silly protestors come up with next?

although their are doubts floating around, i think we did get him. i think their is more to the story than we are being told.

their is another thread floating around that speculates that he was being held prisoner by his own people. i'm starting to agree with that.

its just so hard to get the true facts of a place thats thousands of miles away, and the only way we get our info is from one source, pretty much the military. they can make events look one way, when actually they happened totally differently. america is fed what they want to hear, when its time for us to hear it. even if its not the truth, as long as it looks plausible we'll take it.

i think they got the real saddam

yeah the fact of the matter is, the US troops only moved to capture saddam after large amounts of intelligence pointed to his existence at that location.....it seemed as though all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place
as soon as that intelligence was processed, 600 US troops were assembled and sent as fast as they could go to that barn, and saddam was taken into custody
also, I don't think a fake saddam would have had $750,000 on him for no apparent reason

I'm a little late on the topic, I understand, but I did have to say, Whoa, you guys are paranoid.

I'm not going to sit here and say that the government doesn't lie, but what I am going to say is, You suspect it way too much of the time.

I find it highly unlikely that the government would lie about something that could, in time, come out as one big lie. If the United States said, "We got him; DNA proves it," and then, in a year or so, Saddam popped up in Iraq taking hold of some city, preeching to "his people," then the US, and Bush, would look like a sham. They wouldn't lie about something that could easily come back to bite them in the ass.

And those of you who are pulling at the "ah, what convenient timing" bit, give me a break. Any time to catch Suddam would be beneficial for the United States administration. And at any time, you'd all be saying that the timing was convenient. So it makes Bush look better - must be staged! Please.

Well, one of the reasons I don't think it's a fake is because, if it were a fake, and the real Saddam were to pop up with a tape and say, Hi all, I'm alive, the US would have major egg on its face.

They got him and they'll manage to conjure up a caprture of Saddam some time this fall. I thenk they knew where he was for some time but picked this time for political reasons - like to help holiday sales.

I think its the real Saddam. It would be hard for a government official to make up such a stupid statement like "If I drink water I will have to urinate, and how can I go to the bathroom when my people are in bondage?" That sounds like something this dumbass Hussein would say.

i hope for the sake of our country we did. we dont need a sstupid mistake like that haunting us anymore than the other mistakes currently do.
