Pink Floyd & The Wizard of Oz
Does anyone know about the deal with Pink Floyd and the Wizard of Oz? I heard you can play Dark Side of the Moon with the movie and everything lines up pretty cool. I just don't know how to sync everything up.
What's the deal?

I think your supposed to start the record right after you see the lion roar at the opening of the movie.

I've tried that a number of times. It's really eerie, especially if you're familiar with Dark Side of the Moon and know what to listen for. The cooincidences become less often, but greater magnitude the 2nd and 3rd (well, 2nd and a half) times through the album as well.

There was a laser light show at the planetarium near me that was doing this. It was very cool, too bad I only got to see a couple of clips from the show.

Thanks for all the feedback.
Homey.... thanks for finding that link. It looks like it will be a fun site! And you, too, Sleepyjack. By the way, I recorded the movie from TBS recently. I think they must have purchased the right because they ran it several times so far reently. In the past it came around every year or so.

I've seen it with dask side of the moon 2 or 3 times and it is kinda erie how a lot of it lines up. It does make a difference when you start the music though.
Pink Floyd denies that this was intended however. Still pretty cool to check out.

The Pink Floyd thing does work. It's amazing....not only the music ebb and flows with the goings on on screen, but the lyrics sort of say things that are happening. for example "balanced on the biggest wave" is spoken exactly when Dorothy is walking across the top of the fence"... "The lunatic is on the grass" is right when we see the scarecrow (or his real person character, I forget which). The bells go off in 'Time' exactly when we meet the wicked witch and the sounds in 'Money' happen in conjunction with the film going to color and them landing in Munchkinland....

I can think back years ago to watching TV and listening to music at the same time, all because I was to lazy to turn the TV off. Not to date myself, but some of this time period was pre-remote! I watched the visual of many shows and movies with real music playing. Floyd was one of those I still listen to a lot with the TV on and volume down.

Junior and Senior year of high school, my Calc teacher had us watch this on Halloween, I had done it years earlier, as a study of math. Being that mathamagicians look for patterns in daily life and that sort of like he decided that it was apropriate. Or he just had good taste in music and wanted to listen to DSOTM all day.

The most entertaining part of this is that every member of Pink Floyd denies the sync. They dismiss all the claims. But why would an artist reveal such a deep, dark secret? Its fascinating.
Download a small clip by searching at Google for "The Wizard of Pink". I can't seem to find it just now, but a short clip is out there. |

I heard somewhere that on one verion of the early vinyl releases The Wizard of Oz is mentioned somewhere on (one of?) the insert(s) sleeves.
I have no idea if this is true or not.

I still remember the first time I did this, it was the freakiest thing i'd ever seen. o_O
I had heard of "Dark Side of the Rainbow" but i'd never had a chance to try it myself until a friend sat me down and had me try it-- i watched the whole thing almost without blinking, it just blew my mind. When I got really into it I was even noticing really minute stuff like Dorthy petting Toto in time w/ the music, but i'm sure there's alot of coincidental stuff that just seem really huge once you start matching up major stuff.

Some friends and I tried this with a DVD & CD...it probably wasn't as exact as it would've been using a vinyl, but still pretty damn eerie.
Edit: According to The Setup, using the CD is better than using the vinyl...hmmmm...
