I believe the explanation is entirely scientific.

There is no such object or mirror that reflects 100% light cast onto it, not matter how good it may be. A certain percentage of the light is absorbed by any part of the mirror.

Take a rearview mirror in a car, for example. There's actually two surfaces there, one mirror behind another. The first mirror is what's known as half silver, meaning it reflects 50% of the light cast onto it. A "full" mirror is behind it, so that you can click the mirror up to reduce glare from other headlights at night, but you lose some of the image, or light, when you do this. See what I mean?

spent some time infront of the mirror, was thinking about some how taking a marker and covering all the places on my body I can't see with out a mirror... just a thought...

I wish my brain would paint a prettier picture of myself.

Wow, VERY cool thread! If you want to see how you look like without mirrors just take your picture with a digital camara and upload it onto your computer? Anyway, I agree about the mirror thing,it's so strange...I think I look so much better when I look in the mirror in my bathroom but I look so messed up when I look into my school's bathroom mirror...I dunno it's just so weird!

Of course, taking into account to the speed of light, you never see your face in a mirror as it is exactly when you see it... you see it as it was in the (extremely recent) past.

Doesn't this apply for everything?

Why do you need to see your face?

Watch "The Eye," a Japanese movie about a blind woman who gets a cornea transplant. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325655/
Totally got the heebie jeebies just thinking about this movie! It was great!
Nitpick...The Eye was a Chinese movie. Good one though, nicely ties into this topic.

i hate to post off topic, but on the same thread of perception vs reality (whatever that may be). Looking at myself never really bothered me, it was listening to my recorded voice that freaks me out. I don't sound like that at all, at least not in my head.

I'm much cooler in my head.
