I Can't See My Face!!!

You can't REALLY see your face. Mirrors, pictures; they are all a lie!

haha I was just thinkin about it.

Thoughts?.....

MuTuaL 08-28-2003 05:09 PM

YzermanS19 08-28-2003 05:09 PM

GakFace 08-28-2003 10:58 PM

you're right, i'm seeing the light that is reflected off my face and off the mirror and into my eyes. But I could then say that you can't see anything except Light and Dark. If you go to that degree... alright. so I see reflections of everything that exists... good enough for me.

Sledge 08-28-2003 11:20 PM

In one psychological experiment, subjects and their friends were shown two photographs of the subject: one normal, one reversed. They were asked to rate the pictures by how much they liked them. The friends favored the normal pictures; the subjects preferred the mirror images.

Spooky shit.

it's the ring! ahhhhhhhh

Nefir 08-29-2003 07:16 AM

Thats just the way our brain works. You give it a sample, and it will connect the dots in a way it prefers. You look in the mirror, and see only a small portion of the details, but your brain fills in the rest and you "see" your reflection (but only in your mind's eye :D).

When your friends see you, their brains also fill in the blanks, but in different ways, so no two people visually perceive the same things equally.

Pretty neat, eh?

baaa 08-29-2003 11:44 AM

you are very profound

Flesh 08-29-2003 03:18 PM

well my brain can go fuck itself!!!!

:p hmm i didnt think of it that way. i was thinking that somehow the end result was different with similar input but that explains it good(er). lol

GakFace 08-30-2003 01:41 AM

PulpMind 08-30-2003 02:05 AM

I think about this all the time.. and how I will never see myself the same way the people around me do. much in the same way as our perception of the way someone appears changes the longer we know them... I would love to see my face, with my own eyes.. just once... anyone? please? =(

how does perception change the longer we know them?

hu-man 08-30-2003 07:08 AM

When I was a kid, I used to think all sorts of weird things... like, what if colours didn't really exist, and what if everybody percieved colours differently? I mean, red to somebody might be a colour I've never seen before. Anything could be like that, the whole world, feeling, objects, sound... weird. And nobody will ever know.

bluearmy 08-30-2003 08:09 AM

That is really thought provoking not sure if I like it or not.

Yeah i used to think about this kind of thing all the time aswell. Like somebody else might see the sky as a colour i call purple, but they call it blue, and thus we'll know we are talking about a different colour. Also the colour i see the sky as might to them be known as orange.
I've often wondered what the world would look like through some-one elses eyes.
Havnt thought about sound though but cant see why it would be different. Sound is just our brain's interpretation of vibrations.

Macheath 08-30-2003 10:56 AM

I can see my nose without a mirror and the top lip if I pucker up. Just bits; and out of focus.

I'm not being flippant or dismissive, I do think the question is great. Let's take it up another notch - and remove the face altogether.

I distinctly remember an interview with the actor Gary Busey who had a tumor removed from his sinus cavity. After the surgery, doctors were able to give him a video tape of the surgery...in which his face had been totally removed to access the tumor.

Think for a second about what it would be like to see such a thing and realize that it's just a mass of skin and flesh, like the mask of gore featured so prominently in Hannibal Lecter's escape from custody or Patton's "pile of goo that was your friend's face". (yes, I know we're not in 'Tilted Entertainment' but gore is very cinematic).

sta500 08-30-2003 11:05 PM

The the reversed/normal photograph thing: no shit. We look in the mirror, and it's backward to us. Thus, we get used to it that way. You can buy mirrors that auto matically switch it around so it's 'normal'.

When I was a kid and we were driving on the highway, I used to imagine us driving and the world rotating below us. Then once I thought about a car coming toward us, and they kept pulling the world apart and apart and it tore in half. No more daydreams like that for me.

haha those games are fun :)

ssander9 09-02-2003 02:05 PM

Only problem with the color theory is we all see the same red. When I go to the car dealership and ask to see a red car, they show me a red car......or was it a white car and I though it was red because they said so?

When I was a kid I was taught if the world shifted on its axis or the 1,038 miles per hour the earth spins at was to slow down or speed up we would loose gravity as we know it and either be flung off into space or be so heavy we couldn't stand up.
This bothered me for a long time. I was afraid that if too many people were to move to one side of the planet we would be in big trouble.

What this has to do with the subject of this thread I don't know. You all just got me to thinking about it I guess.

mew 09-05-2003 06:53 PM

Woah-That is crazy shit...Never be able to see your real face...
LoL- Never see your face...face to face..Hahaha! Seriousely, very mind bending!Good catch on that one.

Watch "The Eye," a Japanese movie about a blind woman who gets a cornea transplant. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325655/
Totally got the heebie jeebies just thinking about this movie! It was great!

YEA!

Rotund 09-06-2003 08:58 PM

I want to know more about this mirror that will show you your face "correctly". How does that work?

Also, along the Gary Busey line: In the movie "Faces of Death" there is an autopsy scene where they cut a persons face at the hairline, and rolled the face down like it was a tube sock... it completely fucked me up for a few minutes.

dr_clocker 09-07-2003 03:31 PM

So when I look into a mirror and what I see is not my face. "sigh of relief" Im not going bald then :)

anleja 09-12-2003 08:33 PM

If any thread title deserves 3 exclamation points, it would be this one

Esoteric 09-13-2003 11:00 AM

I think it's a conspiracy.

EeOh1 09-13-2003 10:48 PM

I've thought about that before. A couple of times I've been like, "Hmm, I wonder if I see myself like others do...", but then I'll get a comment on something I was noticing. Whether it be positive or negative.

But yea, I hear ya.

spurswood 09-14-2003 05:15 AM

faces

its true, without light from the sun we wouldnt see a thing.
In complete darkness we are all the same.

meff 09-14-2003 09:56 PM

Brains are overrated

nostalgic1 09-15-2003 01:45 PM

yeah... weird... i never really thought of that before...

its the same idea as saying you'll never see the back of your neck... or the top of your head... it's the same idea.. only you took it a step farther...

Vyxen 09-15-2003 08:47 PM

Hmm, what about scanning in your photo into Paint Shop Pro or something then flipping the image? Think I'll give that a try, now I'm really curious!

fallen_angel 09-29-2003 10:33 PM

ohhh philosophy. . . our own worst enemy. . . true beauty is in the eyes of the beholder

Actually this makes a lot of sense. I see a view of myself most often when I am looking in the mirror, which I do every day getting ready for work, etc. I only see myself as other see me when I look at a photograph of myself. Therefore a reverse image of myself is going to seem more natural than a normal photo.

Hawkspy 10-01-2003 08:59 PM

No seriously if you go stare at your face in a mirror for a long time and really look at the details and then the face as a whole, you start to see yourself really different. And then if you dont quite focus on you face and just stare you face warps and its crazy (and not drug induced) You should really try it

For some strange reason, I think I'll pass. :)

this is exactly along the lines of what I was going to say. It is really freaky if you actually LOOk in the mirror, at the reflection, as though it's someone else....you do just start to notice little things....and think, "wow, maybe this is how other people see me?"

Perception is an odd thing....but then again, it makes sense, cuz it's all dependent on the individual. I bet no one perceives colors, tastes, or sound quite the same..

wannabenakid247 10-16-2003 08:24 AM

Its quite reassuring though because if you dont like what you see you can say well nobody else sees the my face the same way that i do and hope its better than it is lol :)
