Do cats know something we don't?

Any cat owners ever paid attention to your cat and what they do sometimes? I'm referring to a specific behavior that all the cats I've ever had have displayed, looking at a wall or the ceiling where nothing is. I mean staring at it hard and even moving their heads a little as if tracking something moving. I know they will follow a spot of light or shadow on the wall the same way, but I'm talking about when there is nothing that I can see there.

Are they just wierd or could they be seeing things that human eyes can't perceive, like spirts and whatnot?

How about how they can sense really bad storms before they start? Like a tornado or severe thunderstorm with hail.

My cat will not leave my side when a really bad storm is on it's way... and you can't say it's how I am reacting to it, because sometimes I don't even know the storm is going to be that bad.

I can deal with the storm thing. Most animals display some type of foreknowledge of weather change.

My family raises cows and before a storm they will always head towards the woods as a herd to get out of it before it ever starts.

They had a different evolutionary track so I believe they have sense and perceptions we haven't found yet therefore are totally oblivious to and believe to be super special or something of that sort.

Living beings are generally sensitive to changes in the environment (http://www.fitnesspastfifty.com/article1035_2.html). Just as bacteria will react to differences in acidity, insects and mammals can detect differences in macro-weather, such as temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure.

Thousands of years of evolution have given creatures a standard but, to us, a strange ability to sense the environment. We, on the other hand, can sense what we need to and, often, nothing more.

Cats are also very sensitive to sound as well - They can hear and feel bass as low as 10hz I believe. That thunderclap that happened 5 minutes ago and 40 miles away, your cat just felt that. It's the same with Earthquakes and fish - Japanese people report their fish jumping out of the aquariums when an earthquake is about to happen - this is because of the fish's extreme sensitivity to minute vibrations.

Maybe they are thinking? I know when i'm thinking hard i will just stare at nothing... Or maybe they are listening more than they are looking, listening for small rodents or other things that will give them something to do.

My dog does the same stuff.

One night I was sitting at the computer in my bedroom, and she was asleep on my bed. She abruptly woke up and stared at an area towards the top of my bedroom door for about 5 minutes with her tail between her legs. Then she'd try to get calmed down and go back to sleep, only to repeat the exact same thing. This went on for about 2 hours. I didn't notice anything whatsoever.

The really weird part was when the same thing happened again 6 months later. She woke up from a deep sleep and stared at that exact same spot. Animals are weird.

She can also detect thunderstorms amazingly well. She will run and hide in a kitchen cabinet or under a table, then about 15 minutes later I'll hear the slightest sound of thunder in the distance.

Who knows with cats? Perhaps this is why they used to be worshiped in Egypt and other places.... It could be they see things we cannot. I think if they sense something bad in "air" they will either hide to protect themselves or come to your side to protect you.

I feel my cat definitely sees things. I know that it's not just lights on the wall either cause a lot of times it will follow whatever it's staring at right into somplace that has no light at all.

Cats eyes are different how do you know you are looking at the SPECIFIC spot he/she is staring at. They also don't see colors like you do, that might have something to do with it as well.

I have two cats and have seen them do this on rare occasions. Cat's have much better eyesight than humans. Maybe the cat is just watching a piece of dust floating in the air. When a cat is staring at nothing in particular and then arches its back and starts hissing, then it's time to get worried!

Actually they don't have better eyesight, they can see in the night better than us. They do have better hearing and smell though. Not eyesight.

I have 7 cats, thier always staring off into space and nothingness on walls. It's kinda wierd but I never really noticed it as anything. It's true they have developed a totally different range of senses than us over thier evolution.

My cats don't seem to react to the ghost that inhabits my place. They are just as comfortable in the room that gives sensitive people the creeps as they are in the rest of the house.

My favorite odd cat behavior is when they go tearing hell for leather after nothing in particular.

I think cats do all that stuff because they know us humans will try to find a reason for what they do. Then when we are gone, they laugh at us =(

yea, as some people said, they can pick up light where we cannot, so maybe they are just watching a reflective piece of dust floating down.

how about when cats' eyes randomly start glowing and then they attack your feet.

i also saw this article on an epileptic whose dog could sense the seizures coming, and would bite her wrist before they came, so she knew to get in an open area etc.

Also, why do they randomly spas, like their sitting there, then with nothing to agitate them, they run off like a bat out of hell around the table up the couch or something, and then after a while they're all freaked then go back to sleep?

if they were outside they would run to the nearest tree and scratch it to sharpen their claws, basically it's to burn off excess energy. Also has something to do with showing their superiority.

keep in mind cats have very sharp eyesight. It could be tracking a speck of dust in the air that you with your comparitively poor eyesight can't see.
