microwaves, radio waves, tv signals, oh my!
is it just me or does this freak anyone else out.
if i had a powerful enough receiver i could get reception to almost any radio station, tv station, cell phone call, satellite transmission etc... they are all theorectically floating around me all the time. in my house and out of my house. what are they doing to me? and how many stray microwaves are floating about waiting to raise the tempature of my fragile brain? it's spooky. |
I agree, it's very disturbing when you think about it. We're a generation of guinea pigs really, the layman just takes all of his electrical equipment for granted, without giving it a second thought, but surely it's having some kind of effect on us, and I doubt that it's positive.

I work with electronics, specifically high power transmitters and radars. I can tell you that the average person doesnt get enough radiation (from radio waves, as you mentioned) to have any ill effect on them. Just dont sit in front of your TV/computer ALL day, and dont talk on a cellphone too much (thats putting a transmitter right next to your brain). Though most TV's and computer monitors these days are flatscreen/digital and dont really put off much radiation, the old ones still put out quite a bit.
|
And if you have a wireless network in your home, your neighbor can steal your computer files. And you could steal his.
|
Yeah probably depending on how much power they put out, Im not real sure as I dont have one. Also depends on how far away, how much shit is inbetween and ect, but in theory you could.
|
On the local TV news, had a tech sit outside a police precinct and lift files from their network. Tokk the results to the chief. Alarmism for ratings purposes.
|
Man are you serious? I was just going to set up my wireless laptop today, good thing I waited. How can I prevent this theft of files? (Oh and I can't believe all my friends think you can be harmed by a microwave. And then when I argue, no one is on my side, so I'm the odd one out. I hate that!)

If your friends think a microwave oven can hurt them, then they are mistaken. Unless the seal around the oven is broken or something. Now, sitting in front of one of those microwave antennas that trasmit over long distances will definitely fry your ass. I know I read about a Darwin Award about someone trying to stay warm by sitting in front of one of those things. He fell asleep and was found done extra crispy by his co-workers the next morning. Eeeeew. |
it really doesnt mater to me any a few spare micro waves that warm up my brain may be a good thing

One hundred fifty years ago, do you know how many of those man-made signals there were in our environment?
Zero Seventy-five, do you know what percentage of signals are in our environment compared to now? 10% Twenty-five years ago? 30% Studies of long-term effects of all this low-frequency electromagnetic radiation are ongoing. We may not know the effects for another twenty-five years. It may be nothing, it may be very damaging, we just don't know. |
I don't think that most of the low-frequency radiation out there is at all strong enough to effect us unless you're sitting next to a transmitter absorbing it all. That end of the spectrum gives off such little energy it that unless its in very concentrated pulses shouldn't really do much damage at all.
|
Anyone else think that the rise of these man-made signals is possibly the cause of the huuuge rise in cancer cases?
