Government's trying to control the weather

I found this a few months ago. Would it be cool or disasterous if the government could control the weather? Do you think they'd use it for the good of all or just for when it suits their (money making) needs?

interesting... I'm not convinced, planes flying in formation could make some of those contrails.

and of course they seed clouds for rainmaking...

CT actually has an official US Army Department of Weather Control.

Centered around several suspected HAARP and weather control sites, "radar rings" have been spotted on the weather channel, Internet weather sites, and local station radar displays. These appear to be roughly circular spots of precipitation, usually lasting for only one frame of the radar display, then usually vanishing as mysteriously as they appeared. They usually are spotted only in areas that had previously had clear skies. Little noticable rain accompanies these rings, as if it appeared out of nowhere and then evaporated, or the storm only existed momentarily.

As a meteorologist, I have to say that the governments of the world will have a hard time ever controlling the weather. Even with all of the research and study that goes into it, the physics of the atmosphere are just too damn complicated.

Seeding clouds as a form of weather modification has been a reality for over a hundered years...it is simple to do...however, it is much too expensive to perform frequently and not very efficient either...

As for the "radar ring" that appears to be either a temperature inversion over the doppler radar site or some sort of fault with the radar...

Oh, and as for the contrails page...haha...that is a good one...

Contrails are formed by an aeroplane disturbing the equilibrium of the water vapour in the atmosphere...this causes nucleation, which, in turn causes "clouds" or contrails to form...it is merely precipitation in the atmosphere caused by the disturbance the plane has caused.

I think that the whole government-weather-control issue is a perfect one for this forum, because it's just another conspiracy-theorist's dream. I have to agree with zenmaster that it is difficult to control the weather. Crap, we can't even PREDICT the weather very reliably, much less control it. Now, I concede that if the government could control the weather they could cause hurricanes or tornadoes or snowstorms to affect specific local economies, for whatever purpose that would serve. But, to do it - that's another thing altogether. Didn't GI Joe have an episode where COBRA was controlling the weather? See, we just don't have enough metal-headed and half-man/half-snake people around for this kind of thing!

I always try to remember that it's the gov we are talking about here. They can't make oatmeal reliably!

I can't think of a more fumble fingered assortment of crap than our beloved US Gov.

no no no this is impossible because even if you use the machine to make a storm, the butterfly flaaping his wings in brazil can still make the forecast to sunny!

so how can this be? i say no way, man!

Actually I agree. Chaos theory would show that an attempt to control weather on any reasonable scale is pointless.

Presuming full control of weather was possible it would be horrible. Imagine if teh "wrong hands" got a hold of it. Well flood our enemies away...and or starve them.

I'm not as worried about "the wrong hands" as I am about well-meaning but inept morons, which government is full of at all levels.

MrSelfDestruct's "radar rings" are re-calibrations in progress. It isn't actually raining in those. In fact they are almost always done when there is no precipitation in the area so as to be most effective.

There had been attempt to seed clouds with silver iodide back in the 1950s-60s, but those never yielded the desired results, ie they couldn't get it to rain.

if the government were able to control the weather, hell, I'd keep a secret because then we could, hypothetically, unleash atmospheric havoc on "dissenters" around the world.

I imagine that, if it ever became known that the gov't controlled the weather, corporate enterprises would sprout up like daisies. Imagine a "summer all-year" resort...in Nebraska. Or "skiing all year" in Florida. :-)

Guys, controling the weather is the first step into real space travel. Read "hyperspace", it will explain a lot to you. HAARP is a real program that is being used to explore this area. The trails made by jets and the ones described here are two different things. These ones have a film that drops to the ground and can be held in the hand before it desolves.

For more information go to www.coasttocoastam.com. This is a great site for anything out of the ordinary.

The weather is one of the most complicated dynamic things that happens. The only mesurements we can make are limited data points around the world at different times throughout the day. These have allowed the development of macro-weather forecasts, and the accuracy of these has increased through time. Obviously the further out the forecast the less accurate it is. That being said, there have not been enough measurements on a local scale to really know what causes certain things to happen. Any attempt to control the weather is going off very limited data, and while they might have success on a local level, I doubt it will ever be possible to control the weather on anything more than a limited area.
