The case of the mismatched indictments
I was arguing with somebody on blogger about iraq and al qaeda and how i didn't think that they weren't actually cooperating with each other.
He claims that in the 90's obl was indicted and in the indictment the link between iraq and obl was explicitly stated. I looked it up and saw that the 9/11 commission found that no such link existed, and underquestioning from a senator patrick fitzgerald claimed that the iraq-al qaeda link had been removed from the indictment prior to its filing. The thing that inspires the paranoia is the fact the the most widely linked-to copy of the indictment isn't the actual indictment, it's apparently a draft of the indictment. The draft alludes to cooperation between iraq and al qaeda, while the actual copy doesn't. Here's the actual copy (as far as i can tell) http://cns.miis.edu/pubs/reports/pdf...den/indict.pdf More interesting still is that the http://usinfo.state.gov website has two different copies of a press release for the indictment- one that mentions the iraq link, and one that doesn't. This one mentions the indictment: http://usinfo.state.gov/is/Archive_I..._and_Atef.html This one doesn't: http://usinfo.state.gov/is/Archive_I..._Bombings.html This next site has a transcript of the indictment that mentions a link between hussein and iraq, but links to the indictment that doesn't mention the link at all, at least not in the same place as the transcript. http://www.globalsecurity.org/intell...10602_nlt.html It isn't really that big of a deal anymore, i just think that it's interesting. I think that it's a common reference point and a source of "but clinton did it...", and it's everywhere, and it's wrong- at least according to the 9/11 commission. Anyone know anything about this? Am i full of shit? Does the actual copy still reference a connection between iraq and al qaeda- did i just skim it too quickly? |
