This is just crazy....
I was traveling on business earlier this week and I stayed at a Hampton Inn. Basically, the hotel is non-smoking and they make a very good point of that to all of the customers that come into the hotel. The second night I was there, I was having a very hard time sleeping and had finally dozed off in a light sleep around 2 AM. About 3 AM I came out of my sleepy haze to the overwhelming feeling that someone was in the room with me. As I stirred I got a puff of cigarette smoke "blown" in my face. First there was no smell, then it was really strong and then was gone. It was totally nuts. I actually got up and looked around the room and in the hall to see if there was anyone about the place and there was nothing. More noteably, there was no further trace of cigarette smoke anywhere, in the room, in the hall, etc. So I think I might be going batshiat crazy, or there was some way for just a pocket of smoke to find my face...which is crazy. I was awake enough that I can't believe it was just my brain being all f-ed up, I mean I actually coughed at the smoke it was so strong. Anyone have some thoughts or know anything about this sort of phenomena? My wife thinks I'm crazy, to be honest I'm not so sure she's wrong, but there has to be some sort of explanation.

Have to ask: are you trying to quit smoking? It could be withdrawal.
A shrink or therapist might be worth seeing for a mental "tune-up". They can be a great help esp. during times of stress.

Window wasn't open...stress could be it. The sleep paralysis thing has happened before, not sure why I didn't consider that, in any case, a very freaky thing indeed.

So Salty, have you considered that perhaps this is a sign telling you something important about your life? I say this because I am getting strong vibrations about you and that you need to open up about something that you have been keeping secret for a long time.

Interesting, hunnychile, vibrations you say? Not sure what that means, but I'm going to have to disagree. There is nothing I need to open up about. I'm open to hearing more. Feel free to PM me with your thoughts.

I think its cause of all of that bacon you eat.
More seriously though, I am with hagatha on this one. Sometimes wierd shit happens. I think maybe the place has some ghost messing around and breaking the local rules. |

I think sleep paralysis explains one thing, but not the smell.
I had such a vivd nightmare once, involving being restrained, and someone about to torture/kill me... I couldn't move my arms or legs at all and only thought one thing - headbutt them when they get closer. I woke up when I'd headbutted the wall beside me so hard that I brained myself. The pain was so bad but the fear was still there for the next few minutes. However, i've never smelt things in a dream - that is very strange indeed

Could just be that you saw something before you went to sleep about a smoke free environment, or you heard it advertised so much that your psyche just recreated it and it became real enough to wake you....kind of like a bad dream you get kind of shocked awake

[QUOTE=SaltPork]that kind of talk isn't frowned upon, but honestly, how can you link to paranormal when it could easily be something "atmospheric". Maybe the air handler in the room caught some cigarrette smoke from the outside and pulled it into my room.
And if that were the case why bother advertising the hotel as smoke free if all the smoke from outdoors is pumped into the rooms? Do I smell grasping for any explanation but the obvious one?
