Favorite Christmas carol, hymn or song?

Or even a song of the season, like the "Christmas Song?"

I'd love to have you share it.

Guess that means I should go first?

Silent Night.

Thanks for reading this and for your responses, in advance.

Meditrina 12-16-2005 06:50 AM

There are too many that I like to say 1 in particular is my favorite.

I like O Holy Night (the Josh Groban version), Silent Night, and Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth (David Bowie and Bing Crosby).

Eweser 12-16-2005 07:17 AM

My favorite is Silent Night. Currently the version I like best is by Reba McEntire, but I have yet to hear one I just couldn't stand.

Redlemon 12-16-2005 08:20 AM

Silent Night is also a favorite for me, and my favorite version of it is by The Ritz, a 4-part mixed a cappella vocal jazz version. Verse 1, new lyrics and melody, with the original melody hummed in the background. Verse 2, sung straight. Verse 3, very dense clustered chords, but still simple.

I'm also fond of The Wassail Song.

And the line "Bring us some figgy pudding" makes me laugh every time I sing it.

Bill O'Rights 12-16-2005 08:50 AM

My favorite secular song would have to be The Christmas Song. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose...
My favorite religious carol? Probably, O Come All Ye Faithfull. Bing Crosby's, of course.

cellophanedeity 12-16-2005 08:59 AM

Trans Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24

Very very good!

Redlemon 12-16-2005 09:05 AM

Best Christmas song written by two Jews: "Silver Bells", by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans (see also: Mona Lisa, Que Sera Sera, Bonanza, Mr. Ed).

Charlatan 12-16-2005 09:09 AM

Currently I can't get enough of Harvey Danger's "Sometimes you have to work on Christmas"

But I'd have to say my seasonal favourites are, "Baby It's Cold Outside" and "Let is Snow, Let is Snow, Let is Snow."

Willravel 12-16-2005 09:14 AM

Man this is like asking my favorite movie or book...there's so many favorites. I am all about Christmas. My first memory is of Christmas, I celebreate one a year every year (okay that's not unique, but oh well), I perform every christmas in church or in a Macys, I carol! I give bigger presents than I can afford and I send tons to charaties and relief organizations. I pull out all the decorations and my cds of Christmas music and play them, starting the day after Thanksgiving (not after Halloweeen, that would take away from Thanksgiving). So neeways, my favorite song.

The Christmas song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire...). After much deliberation, this is probably my favorite because it really captures the feeling of christmas for me (and I know a kick ass version of it on piano). Second place is "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" as sung by Bing Crosby.

God of Thunder 12-16-2005 09:24 AM

It's not Christmas season until I hear Cheech & Chong's "Santa Claus and his Old Lady"

rsl12 12-16-2005 09:46 AM

I think I have to go with silent night as well--it touches a particular nerve that no other christmas song hits. It's comforting, spiritually lifting, and very warm.

Kadath 12-16-2005 10:08 AM

Like sportswidow, "O Holy Night," though I prefer Nat King Cole's version. Makes me cry. That's Christmas for me.

Derwood 12-16-2005 10:13 AM

What Child is This, but mostly because it steals Greensleeves for it's melody

flstf 12-16-2005 10:22 AM

Diana Krall - Christmas Time is Here
Vince Guaraldi Trio - Christmas Time is Here (Instrumantal and Vocal)
The Carpenters - Merry Christmas Darling
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - by many

Yeah, me too.

Mahalia Jackson does a sweet version of O Holy Night. That whole Christmas album rocks.

snowy 12-16-2005 03:54 PM

I love O Holy Night and Lo How A Rose Ere Blooming for traditional hymns, as well as the Holly and the Ivy and In Dulci Jubilo.

For more modern songs, I really enjoy the Christmas Song, as sung by Nat King Cole, mostly because I love his phrasing. I also really love a good concert band or orchestral version of Sleigh Ride, mostly because I find the percussion part so awesome. As far as rock bands doing Christmas songs--I have to vote for U2's Baby Please Come Home because well, I love U2.

Truly, though, there is very little Christmas music I dislike, as I was in choir all through school, and Christmas music is our bread and butter. I know more hymns, carols, and whatnot than the average person because of it, but I think that's awesome.

A great reference: http://christmassongbook.net/

Another vote for this.

I actually like Christmas music; it's unfortunate that I work in retail because I'm totally burnt out on it by Christmas and can't enjoy it.

I also like O Tannenbaum, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, So This Is Christmas, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, and the song by Tom Petty which escapes my memory at the present. And the season is never complete until I hear the messed up version of the Twelve days of Christmas ...ya know, the version where the first day of Christmas he rigs up the lights....

Cynthetiq 12-16-2005 07:00 PM

personally touching to me for some reason... Little Drummer Boy.

a whimsical one, C3P0 and R2D2 going over Christmas singing...

12 Pains of Christmas by Bob Rivers

If you like that one, you'll love The Restroom Door Said Gentlemen (God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen)
The Restroom Door Said "Gentlemen", so I just walked inside.
I took two steps and realized I'd been taken for a ride.
I heard high voices, turned, and found the place was occupied.
by two nuns, three old ladies, and a nurse -- what could be worse?
Than two nuns, three old ladies, and a nurse!

The Restroom Door Said "Gentlemen", it must have been a gag.
As soon as I walked in there, I ran into some old hag.
She sprayed me with a can of mace and slapped me with her bag.
I could tell this just wouldn't be my day, what can I say?
This just wasn't turning out to be my day!

The Restroom Door Said "Gentlemen", and I would like to find.
the crummy little creep who had the nerve to switch the signs.
'cause I've got two black eyes and one high heel up my behind.
Now I can't sit with comfort and joy -- boy o boy!
No, I'll never sit with comfort and joy!

muckluck 12-17-2005 07:56 AM

Happy Christmas (War is Over) John Lennon

Anxst 12-17-2005 08:11 AM

My favorites are In Praise of Christmas and the Wassail Song.

Although an honorable mention goes to Carol of the Bells.

Quote:

Okay, everyone's been asking for it, so here it is, our Twelve Days Of Christmas. We're gonna sing it now...

Bob Okay, good day, this is our Christmas part of the album, and you can play this at your Christmas parties, uh, or to yourself on Christmas Eve, if there's nothing else to do.
Doug Good day, eh? In case you thought, like, I wasn't on this part!
Bob Oh, I guarantee ya, you'd be on. Okay, so, good day, this is the Christmas part, and, we're gonna tell you what to get, uh, your true love for Christmas.
Doug Look out the window!
Bob Where?! Whadda ya doing?
Doug Snow, hosehead.
Bob Wha? Oh, it's the Great White North, and it's snowing, cause it's Christmas time. Hey, hoser!
Doug What?
Bob Here's a quiz. Quiz for Doug.
Doug Okay, I have my thinking touque on.
Bob Yeah, right. What are the twelve days of Christmas? Cause, figure it out, right. Christmas is when?
Doug Uh, the 25th.
Bob Right, and what's the 24th, Christmas Eve, right? So, that's two. And then, what's after that?
Doug Um... Uh, Wrestling Day.
Bob No. Get out.
Doug Boxing Day, yeah, yeah.
Bob That's three. Then what's after that? Nothing.
Doug New Year's.
Bob Four. And what's...
Doug New Year's Eve.
Bob Five. Where do you get twelve?
Doug Uh... There's two Saturdays and Sundays in there, that's four. That's nine. And, three other days, which I believe are the mystery days.
(Music starts.)
Bob Okay now. This is our Christmas song, in case you don't know what to get somebody for Christmas.
Doug There's lots of ideas in here, so, listen, and don't get stuck.
Bob Okay.
Doug By the way, that's me on the organ.
Bob Aw, geez.
Doug You start.
Bob Okay. On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: a beer.
Doug On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: two turtlenecks,
Bob And a beer. (Okay...) On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: three French toast,
Doug Two turtlenecks,
Bob And a beer. (Okay...)
Doug There should be more there, eh?
Bob Where? On the... go.
Doug Fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: four pounds of backbacon,
Bob Three French toast,
Doug Two turtlenecks,
Bob And a beer.
Doug In a tree. See, you need more.
Bob Fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: five golden touques!
Doug Four pounds of backbacon,
Bob Three French toast,
Doug Two turtlenecks,
Bob And a beer, what was it?
Together In a tree!
Bob Okay, on the sixth... go.
Doug Of Christmas, my true love gave to me: six packs of two-four,
Bob & BG Singers Five golden touques!
Doug Four pounds of backbacon,
Bob Three French toast,
Doug Two turtlenecks,
Bob And a beer,
Together In a tree!
Bob Okay.
Doug Okay.
Bob On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: seven packs of smokes,
Doug (Nice gift...) Oh, six packs of two-four! (BG Singers also sing "nice gift".)
Bob & BG Singers Five golden touques!
Doug Four pounds of backbacon,
Bob Three French toast,
Doug Two turtlenecks,
Bob And a beer,
Together In a tree!
Bob Right, I keep forgetting.
Doug Phew! This should just be the two days of Christmas, it's too hard for us!
Bob Um...
Doug Go, hoser.
Bob Oh.
Together Eigth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me:
Doug Eight comic books,
All Seven packs of smokes, six packs of two-four,
(Bob and Doug become unsynchronized with the BG Singers, and quit singing.)
BG Singers Five golden touques! Four pounds of backbacon, three French toast, two turtlenecks,
All And a beer,
Doug On my tree!
Bob Yeah. That beer's empty. Okay. Day,
BG Singers Twelve!
Bob Uh, twelve.
Doug Good day, and welcome to day twelve.
BG Singers Five golden touques!
All Four pounds of backbacon, three French toast, two turtlenecks, and a beer, in a tree!
Bob Beauty, eh?
Doug Where'd you learn to do that?
Bob Uh, albums.
Doug Boy. So, like, that's our song, Merry Christmas...
Bob Merry Christmas!
Doug And good day!
Bob Good day, everybody. Happy New Year, too. Sheesh. Okay, you know what you left out?
Doug What?
Bob Donuts - I told you to get me donuts! Either on the ninth day or the tenth day, or the eleventh day, I wanted donuts!
Doug Okay, the song's over.
Bob But I want...
Doug Merry Christmas, everybody!
Bob Or on the twelfth day, you coulda got me a dozen donuts.
Doug So, go out to the stores, and get some presents.
Bob You coulda gone down to, like, the good donut shop, where if you buy a dozen, you get another one free, and then thirteen for the thirteen days of Christmas.
Doug Well, next Christmas, I'll get me a chainsaw...
Bob Take off!
Doug Boy, that song was a beauty. It moved me...
Bob Yeah, I think it ranks up there with Stairway to Heaven...
Doug Wha-?
Sadly -- I googled this -but I could do 95 percent of it from memory... :) andI'm not even a Canuckistani.... :)

My favorite christmas carol... hands down is O Holy Night... I also like Adestes Fideles but only if it's sung in Latin...

The other night I was listening to Jewel's Face of Love and that is really a beautiful song... depressing and weepy but a beautiful song

Non religious--Bruce's Santa Claus is coming to town wins... and Brian Setzer's Jingle Bells...

rhaevyn 12-17-2005 01:30 PM

I have a few favorites: O Holy Night, Mary Did You Know, and The Christmas Song.

Also, I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas :)

Roark 12-17-2005 04:21 PM

I think my traditional favorite is O' Holy Night. But like pretty much all of them.. thankfully the season ends just about the time I start to get sick of them lol

PastorTim 12-17-2005 09:01 PM

Well, the responses so far have been interesting.

cellophanedeity, I'm not familiar with Trans Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 -- any where to hear it online?

Never heard of Harvey Danger's "Sometimes you have to work on Christmas" Charlatan but sounds interesting.

willravel, do you play the piano well? You must be popular at parties.

God of Thunder, my brother was a Cheech & Chong fan but I never heard that one! lol

Derwood, you comment that "What Child is This?" STOLE Greensleeves melody made me laugh!

onesnowyowl, I've never heard of "Lo How A Rose Ere Blooming" -- anywhere to hear it online?

maleficent -- Speaking of McKenzie brothers, I used to love watching SCTV. A lot of comediens got there "start" there.

rhaevyn, I've never heard of "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas" -- wow, can you imagine if you child actually asked for THAT? lol...

Thanks for the good responses. God bless.

Awesome! Thanks.

Lebell 12-18-2005 07:23 PM

I have a particular fondness for this one:

Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella

Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella
Bring a torch, come swiftly and run.
Christ is born, tell the folk of the village,
Jesus is sleeping in His cradle,
Ah, ah, beautiful is the mother,
Ah, ah, beautiful is her Son.

Hasten now, good folk of the village,
Hasten now, the Christ Child to see.
You will find Him asleep in a manger,
Quietly come and whisper softly,
Hush, hush, peacefully now He slumbers,
Hush, hush, peacefully now He sleeps.

I am also partial to "These Three Ships"

Gilda 12-18-2005 08:01 PM

Linus and Lucy the jazz piano riff from A Charlie Brown Christmas.

And John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)"

Quote:

Yoko Ono & John Lennon
(Happy Xmas Kyoko
Happy Xmas Julian)

So this is Xmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Xmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Xmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Xmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Xmas
And what have we done
Another year over
A new one just begun
And so happy Xmas
We hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
War is over, if you want it
War is over now

Happy Xmas

and the KINKS "Father Christmas"

Quote:

Lyrics by Raymond Douglass Davies

When I was small I believed in Santa Claus
Though I knew it was my dad
And I would hang up my stocking at Christmas
Open my presents and I'd be glad

But the last time I played Father Christmas
I stood outside a department store
A gang of kids came over and mugged me
And knocked my reindeer to the floor

They said:
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys.
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Don't give my brother a Steve Austin outfit
Don't give my sister a cuddly toy
We don't want a jigsaw or monopoly money
We only want the real McCoy

Father Christmas, give us some money
We'll beat you up if you make us annoyed
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys

But give my daddy a job 'cause he needs one
He's got lots of mouths to feed
But if you've got one, I'll have a machine gun
So I can scare all the kids down the street

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Have yourself a merry merry Christmas
Have yourself a good time
But remember the kids who got nothin'
While you're drinkin' down your wine

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
Father Christmas, please hand it over
We'll beat you up, so don't make us annoyed

Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread, so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Suave 12-20-2005 02:09 AM

Either "Hippopotamus For Christmas" or "Santa Baby". Both hugely entertaining. :D

vermin 12-20-2005 10:02 PM

Carol of the Bells has always been my favorite (and the parody song "Ding fries are done").

Honorable mention must go to any group of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders singing "Away In A Manger". Only time I ever got teary-eyed in church.

Edit: when I was in eighth grade we did a musical version of Luke 2 with a truely awe-inspiring melody. Unfortunately that was in the days before realitivly cheap video cameras, so it only exists in my memory anymore.

Poppinjay 12-22-2005 09:56 AM

Diana Krall could sing the AP Stylebook and I'd buy it. Her new Christmas album is great, makes me jealous of Elvis Costello.

For traditionals, I love, "There Was A Pig Went Out To Dig", and "Bring A Torch, Jeannette Isabella".

As a kid, growing up on the coast with the fishery and port industries, I always liked "I Saw Three Ships".

Telluride 12-26-2005 01:59 AM

I'm posting this a little late, since Christmas is over...

"Jingle Bell Rock", by Bobby Helms.

and...

"Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24", by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
