New SOAD: Hypnotize

I just got the new SOAD album, Hypnotize. I haven't listened to all of it yet but what I've heard is good. This album is continuation of the one released earlier this year, Mezmerize. When I heard that they were releasing two albums this year I thought it was strange, but cool. The first one was 36:32, less than half of what can fit on a disc. Naturally I assumed that the second half must be long enough so that it couldn't fit on one disc. Of course I was wrong. The new one is 39:47. The two combined are 76:19 and a CD holds 80 min of music. Interesting.

So basically, its like what the fuck, they had both discs more or less complete in March but they decide to not only split them into two records but also spread them apart by six months. This was purely a business decision and serves only to rip off the fans. Just because you have 12 songs it doesn't mean its an album. People pay $20 for a CD, give them their money's worth.

And labels wonder why some have decided not to pay for music anymore...

I agree with that whole thing about splitting the CDs being just for the sake of making money, which is why I bought/plan on buying neither and waited until about 3 days ago to burn them both on one disk.

At first I wasn't impressed with Mesmerize, but letting the whole CD play through from Mesmerize all the way through Hypnotize sounds really good.

I've not had time to sit and find out which tracks I like and dislike on Hypnotize, but I remember "She's Like Heroin" standing out to me, mainly for the lyrics.

As one whole CD, I think it's great. Sold as 2 seperate CDs is a complete ripoff.

I'm sick of bands thinking 10-13 songs = album regardless of length. It's not a full album unless its about an hour long. Sadly, that is rarely the case.

I know what your talking about, really getting upset with the length of albums these days, FYI both Hypnotize and Mesmerize do fit on One CD, feeling kinda ripped off...

But, Ill be a sucker and still pick it up when it comes out on the 22ND!!

Not bands, producers. I claim not to know what goes through a band member's head, but they're not trained in marketing and I can't imagine they have all that much say in how it goes. But I remember specifically hearing that the band wanted to release Mesmerize and Hypnotize as one album and Sony nixed it, figuring that with that many tracks it could be made into two, which ends up being twice the profit. The end result is two half albums that aren't as strong as one whole one would be, a pissed off fanbase and, I reckon, probably a pissed of group as well. But the labels hold all the cards.

Have listened to it a couple of times. Not really that impressed, nothing really stood out. Mesmerize was better IMO, but their earlier stuff better again.

Whilst they have always been political in their lyrics, i think its almost going to far on the new album.

I like the new one. Can't compare it to Mesmerize, as they really are two different albums. They didn't put out one 23 song album because they thought it was too much music at once. If they felt the songs were best at 2-3 minutes, that's up to them.

My favorite tracks on the new disc are "Attack", "Hypnotize", "Holy Mountains", "Solider Side" and "U-Fig".

Plus, who pays $20 for a CD? I bought each one the day they were released for $8.99 each, and got a free T-Shirt with the 2nd one (at Circuit City). Together that was less than $20.

It's supposed to be a double album but Sony or whoever made them split the releases out, thats what i heard atleat.

I love this album, along with all the albums, SOAD is one of the greatest bands ever. My favorite songs would be "Lonely Day" "Soldier Side" and "Attack"

I'd take 13 good 3 minute songs ay day over 13 drawn out 6 minute songs. Compare "Mesmerize" to "St. Anger". Would Metallica's album have been better if each song was about 2 minuts shorter? I say yes.

C'mon now. You and I both know the only thing that would've saved St. Anger is if the entire band had been replaced just prior to the songwriting process. Twice, just to make sure the first replacements were contaminated by the hacks they were replacing.

Actually, scratch that. There is nothing that could've saved St. Anger. That album was doomed from conception to release. I'm tempted to say that if one could somehow restore Metallica to their Black glory days it would've made it better, but that's not true since Black era Metallica would've smacked anyone who suggested they record an album like St. Anger very firmly upside the head.

Watch "Some Kind of Monster" and you fully understand why that album sounds the way it does.

But regardless, my point was that I don't care how long the album is if it's tight, well produced, well written, etc. I don't feel ripped off because this CD isn't an hour long

Opeth did that with their Damnation and Deliverance albums.

But one of the albums was the heavy one and the other the soft one.
