Matisyahu does rock and his producer from JDub records is actually a good friend of mine. I am seriously impressed by how far he has gotten considering his music is so far from mainstream. I am left wondering though how he is going to tour with that new baby of his.

Oh man. I saw him on MTV this morning. Kind of gimmicky, though.

Yeah there is a couple threads about him somewhere around here.
I also have been to a couple of his shows and they are pretty good.

when i first saw him i def thoght to myself "is this guy for real" but he is. his stuff is real dope and his live stuff i think is very energetic. puts on a real good show plus he has a good message plus a tight sound. check out the live at stubbs recording they put out. i think its better than the regular album. if anyone live in a city with XPN you can hear it on the radio all the time.

Yeah, they play his "hit" song on Indie Radio here in Phoenix. He's pretty fly for a hasidic guy. Sorry, that was lame. But in all seriousness, he's quite talented. And the best people always perform to what they know and believe. I really think he'll stick around for a bit.

Watching that invokes a lot of different feelings. First I like the tune and the rythym, and he is quite talented. But somehow I can't get past the image of him crowd surfing and not consider it somewhat of a joke. Too many images of the Amish burned in my brain who live nearby and dress identical to him and shun electricity to take it too seriously.

He is great, saw him again recently... Also liked a guy name of Rav Shmuel used to be part of a small band called gefilta fish, and they would play in parking lots before phish concerts and a number of places in NYC.

King without a crown has fucking blown up here. It's been the most requested song on alternative station for a good amount of time, i think it's been like 2 months now. I was first introduced to it here, and thought it was awesome, but the more I hear it, the less I like it.

vermin-
It's not rapping, it's reggae... and they are quite different. Also, the rhyme and rhythm of reggae lends itself to sounding that way VERY well, and not at all to sounding white. In fact, UB40 is a big reggae band, and they are 5 white and 2 jamaican... you'd NEVER know it though. It's not like faking something, it's just a style. And yeah, they play the song all the time in Phoenix. Also he was on David Letterman the other night (Tuesday I think?). |

i just picked the CD up off Itunes yesterday, and I can't stop playing it!!
Live at Stubbs.. Seriously great music for anything you are doing!! Cleaned out the car to it yesterday, Writing out Bills today to it, ANYTHING!! You would be doing quite a disservice to yourself not to give the CD a listen with an open mind, you may find that there are more than 2 likeable songs on the disc. I don't even think of him as a Hasidic Jewish Reggae guy. Just good music.

Yeah, Matisyahu rocks. To be honest, I've only heard "King W/O a Crown", but I really like it, and I just can't get over how cool the whole Jewish Reggae thing is.
