Well, at the moment, i'm listening to Part Chimp - Hello Bastards.

To be honest, i'm one of the few "indie-kids" that I know of who actually don't collect vinyl. Sure, i've been given a few for gifts, but besides that, I pretty much have them collecting dust on a shelf somewhere in my house.

I live in a small town, where there is pretty much no scene at all. Only probably 5 bands, and 4 out of 5 of them are pop-punk bands. We've lost all our venues in town also, so we rarely get shows to play.

From my nearest city though, Edmonton, they have a great scene. Bands like Choke, Wet Secrets, Lazersnake, The Floor. Can't go wrong with them. I hope to move there soon and get my band out in the open.

I'm starting to get into a little indie rock. Mainly just early-mid 90's stuff like Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, and Pavement and post-rock like Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, and Godspeed. I'm not touching scene, however, and I still consider myself a post-rock/metal-head first.

is there really such a thing as an indie rock snob, seems to be a slight contridiction. Unfortunatly bloc party only came into my life late last year, however my suggestion stands at a french band who sing in english called phoenix (awesome band). Wolf parade up and coming, or at least should be.

For you chill out music fans M83 is ideal, more heading towards the electronic end of music, but i have yet to find an indie rocker who hasn't liked them.

The shins are a much under represented band in the indie scene, have no idea why? their tunes rock.

The kills, The newpornographers, the cribs, regina spektor, razorlight and patrick wolf. That's my lot for the moment, i'll come back with more bands as soon as you have enjoyed those.

I like m83.. to a point. Too much of it drives me batty. I guess I'm not a indie snob as what I thought was indie (Taking Back Sunday etc) isn't really considered indie.. :shrug:


are The Dandy Warhols considered indie? cuz I'm diggin them pretty hard. Oh and what about Muse?

I would consider Dandy Warhols and Muse rock bands, they're signed to majors.

I saw Wolf Parade the other night. They were actually really good.
Saw Clap Your Hands say Yeah a few weeks ago, they were not quite as impressive, much better on record.
Enjoying the newest Sufjan Stevens a whole lot lately.

Just discovered a band called Okkervil River recently, they're pretty awesome. Kinda like a wilco meets neutral milk hotel sorta thing.

I'll be re-visiting this thread.

I'm inspired already, although through a friend i have the Clap your Hands and Sufjan Stevens ablums i not yet given them a listen. Well i lie because i'm listening to Sufjan Stevens and it is beautiful, nice melodic tones very agreeable. I'll slap it on to my mp3 player and give it a good run through tomorrow.

I'm happy you saw wolf parade, i wish i had a little more time and money to see more bands. I went through a nice stint when i was in berlin for a yeah and was seeing a band at least every other week. So many band were found in that year. A whole world of music exploded before my eyes and i've never looked back. Before then i was always a fan of the Brit-pop movement taking some great bands along the way, super furry animals as an example or ash. Of course oasis and blur were always part of the mix, then moved to the american bands, weezer, ben folds five, mercury rev, flaming lips, the strokes ... etc. Now i'm appreciating so many bands that simply don't get air time or are reatively unknown.

Before i forget the new Doves album is definately worth a listen - Some cities.

*M83 to a point* - I'll settle for that guccilvr - Origin of symmetry is a good lisen haven't heard any other of the albums.

sofia coppola also recommends phoenix, but they really aren't my thing. too poppy? i know them from the erlend oye dj kicks mix.

stuff on vinyl is cool if it hasn't been released in CD/mp3 form, or you happen to be a DJ. otherwise, what's the point? of course, there is a LOT of great music on vinyl, 45s, 78s and even cylinders.

i like m83 and sufjan. bloc party is pretty boring. clap hands is pretty good, but i'm not surprised that their show was so-so.

recent releases i like include devendra banhart and animal collective. this is no striking revelation. an interesting new (to me) band i heard recently is celestine. they are from sveeden. also broken spindles has some good tunes. anyone heard of mylo? album leaf? can't think of much else...i actually haven't listened to "indie" that much lately.

I'm actually not a huge fan of Phoenix's records either, but that song on the Ereland Oye CD is the shit, I love that song.

I haven't been able to get into the devandra Banhart or Animal collective, they're both a little much for me. Not enough song structure with the collective, and I just can't stand Banhart's voice. What are they calling her? I think i read that she's "freak folk". If that's the case it's not my thing. I'll take my Neutral Milk Hotel instead anyday. But I do know lots of people who are way into her... just not my thing.

Although he has teamed up with Joanna Newsom (sp?) who has a unique voice. They're pretty good, although Devendra's new album is overly long in my opinion.

Anyway, as for my snobness i really like The National, Wolf Parade, The Clientele, Thee More Shallows and Rogue Wave atm.

I also started to get into Olivia Tremor Control and Circulatory System, who are on the ELephant Six label, dealy, that Jeff Magnum et al are involved with.

freak folk, yeah, i'm kind of surprised i'm listening to it myself. my friend gave me a bunch of devendra's early stuff. it sounds like a hippie singing into an answering machine; i was a bit disappointed. but the new one is pretty cool and slightly disturbing.

the new animal collective is more structured than their last, but i know what you mean. also, every picture i've seen of those guys seems to indicate heavy drug use.

i do like the new wolf parade but have to listen to it some more.

another unique band is finland's paavoharju. it's more on the illbient side of things with lo-fi bleeps and scratchy piano rolls.

NMH is awesome though, classic. i have heard a little OTC on the radio, but need to get an album yet.

and i've recommended autolux quite a few times, but i'll throw that in here just because i like them so much.

What kind of stuff do you spin? I'm all about the Rapture, and LCD, and all that disco-y sounding stuff, so good to play at parties. Anyone who thinks you need to play "dance" music to get people moving is full of shit!!

If anyone ever catches me playing anything Top 40, Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, or anything that's been so over played no one cares anymore... You all researve the right to shoot me.

I went to see Bim Skala Bim a bunch of years ago (maybe 1995-96)? I didn't know them in particular, but it was a ska show, so I went. The opening acts were Reel Big Fish, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, and... um... oh yeah, Let's Go Bowling. Never heard from the last one again, but RBF and CPD made a reasonably-sized splash a year or two later. That's as close as I can get to being cool.

I can't really lay claim to being an indie "snob" or even being on the cutting edge, as their was no "scene" in my town. The closest we came is that several so-so metal bands played the local dive bars, and one of the bands actually got good and got signed (Bobaflex).

Lately, I've been abandoning my pop-metal wannabe teen angst sorta shit for more indie stuff. I'd say my biggest find yet would have been Deathcab for Cutie and The Postal Service WAY before most people in this area were listening to them (and before DCFC went to a major). I was still a year or so behind picking up the older stuff, but for this area (rural West Virginia) they're still relatively unknown, with most people only knowing them as "that band with the song about souls and bodies".

I'm definitely trying to get into a lot more diverse groups so as to build my indie "cred" and allow me to look down my nose at others while discussing my vinyl collection.

Next paycheck is definitely going to picking up some of the groups mentioned in this thread.

And I'd have to add, even though they're not exactly indie (I'm not familiar with their label, and not sure of it's actual status) I'm diggin' the fuck outta The Perishers right now. Even if they're not technically "indie" it's definitely a rare band for this area.

I like some indie rock but am not part of the scene. As my penis is large enough to satisfy all but the most depraved women, I feel no need to exchange indie cred. Sorry to disappoint.

I did once catch Of Montreal live on an ex (then current) girlfriend's insistence and was quite impressed. She also introduced me to E6 and indie in general, for that matter.

Eric's Trip is a beautiful beautiful band. One of my all time favorites. I will always miss their great music.


Right now, i've picked up the new DFA1979 remix album that came out on tuesday. Not bad at all, they remix the same songs far too much.

I've been on a giant The Books kick lately.

If you like Joanna Newsom then you'll definately like Regina, she also done a b side with the strokes on one of their singles, I forget what it is called but arguebly (sp) one of the best songs ever. I'll try and find out the name and will edit back in here.

Far from an indie snob, but I've been into a lot of "indie" type stuff recently.

The Wolf Parade - Apologies from Queen Mary - Fantastic. I caught them live with the Arcade Fire not long ago and it was great. I can't get enough of the disc after many listens.

BRMC - Howl - maybe not indie but it's a fantastic album
Spoon - Gimmie Fiction - maybe not indie either... still fantastic
Sufjan Steven - Illinoise - another great disc
Andrew Bird - Mysterious Production of Eggs
The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike - I like the tunes without lyrics the best. cool stuff though.

I can't get enough of My Morning Jacket either lately. Their new album Z is amazing.

I went and saw this band Okkervil River this week, they were amazing. Anyone heard of them/seen them before? They're kinda this alt-country/indie/folk-rock sort of thing. I don't know, but I discovered them by accident about 2 months back and i'm really glad I did. I highly suggest checking them out.

As for myself, i got the new Cloud Cult cd - Advice From The Happy Hippopotamus last week and it is fantastic. For me, one of the best of 2005, a nice eclectic mix of styles - all the good indie flavours i would've thought they'd be getting more publicitiy/hype though?

NInja high school [from toronto] crazy hip-hop/dancecore it's a bit strange.....haven't had the chance to get their album; I'll take a listen to it probably next week. [only song I've heard is 'jam band death cult'].

Plus, I was listening to a CBC podcast [good canadian stuff on there, btw] and heard falconhawk - try a little longer...
Great, catchy addictive pop, reminds me of frou frou with a band, for some reason...

God, I should be on top of this stuff, since I have my own show on the college radio station, but our subscription to CMJ hasn't shown up yet, and we have a near non-existant record budget [to buy them].
Thanks for the tips, I'll try to see if I can get ahold of some of this stuff.

Did you go to the show? I hope it was as good there as it was here. I've picked up some of their older stuff now too, I have 2 of the older full lengths, and an EP, and they all seem to be pretty good. Their older stuff seems to tend to be a little slower, more downbeat, but still all really good. I don't know why, but I can't get over how good that show was, they played with so much energy, and the old stuff which I didn't even know was so amazing. Hope it was awesome in Hotlanta as well!
