Sorry if I am somewhat of a newbie and someone has posted about LimeWire already and (just now I am realizing that perhaps a search in TF on "LimeWire" might have been prudent) but I am taking the excuse of newbies acting stupid to heart and posting this thread here without looking for closer relations.

All this talk about "community" and contribtuing (and my recollections that when I first ran across T.F. about a year ago and my jaw dropped for the week or so I was on it before I discovered that whole section became banned... does the words keys ring a bell?... ...are they still coming??? )

But my "contribution" is this question:

Also, at about the same personal historic period, I was a newbie to "LimeWire" (which I am under the impression is hard to find on the net these days as legal stipulates are getting tougher) ... (being a newbie on that as well I ran into the very disastrous problem of newbie eating trojans... so I swore off limewire for a while... ie to this day)
but back to my question: I was running Limewire on Win98 and a 56K dialup.
a property of this configuration is that almost universally (I cant tell but the new MS Windows update mechanism seems to get around this limit as well???) ... "almost" universally, when you are using a 56K dialup and downloading a file, your average top speed is 5.5 K to 4.5 K. (whether P2P or web pages)

So why do they tell you you get 56K?

BUT, and I do mean BUT... the insatllation of limewire seemed to do something else. AM I WRONG ABOUT THIS??!! --> If you left Limewire alone it would start downloading at speeds up around 45K!!!

Now what I mean by this is that it seemed to me that when the screen saver made the whole screen black... ie all processor use devoted to the OS (no GUI) then the download speed was maxing at the actual claim of about 56K...
And I have never seen this to actually happen.
My belief that this is true is based on falling asleep, seeing the black screen, touching the mouse, and looking at the rates Limewire was claiming which would be up around 45K but immediately dropping once the screen was not black... AM I WRONG ABOUT THIS???

For those looking for the real limewire. My bet is that if the .com version and the .org version are different , you will be safer with the .org version...

(Of course I am stating the obvious for most people)

I see no reason why you couldn't get 45kb on a dialup connection..especially if you're connected to a fast host. As far as the answer to your screen saver issue.. nfi.

All I know is limewire is a mem/proc hog and will never be on my compy again. Use soulseek if you want a good program and a good p2p community.

I have both soulseek and limewire and, while I agree that limewire is a hog of a proggy, selection is far better and doesn't depend on the file owners to actually be on.
That being said, I would strongly advise against using limewire for program downloads and sharing and stick to basic music files. I got hit time and again with trojans trying to get software, but never have getting music.
It slows down everything, agreed. I can't even play music while getting new music and I have cable and just recently upped the cache to double what it had been. I would suggest if, you really want to use limewire, don't do multitasking or take everything and download it overnight.

there's no way limewire has better selection.. sorry.. been there tried that.

Just did a little 'test'...things I listen to that are a bit more 'obscure' can be found on limewire, they cannot be found on slsk...(limewire works like those older fileshare programs and you did not have to be online as your music file becomes a shared 'library', of course with cable, technically, you're always 'on', until you shut the computer off; dial-up, no so that obviously would not work).
My point is, what I can find on slsk I can also find on Limewire and then some and I don't have to be 'allowed' nor do the files I seek have to be 'allowed'. You're online, you're sharing, and don't have to have limewire open to do so, as I understand it.

"you're on, you're sharing" .. exactly one of the main reasons I'll never use it again. I like having the option of allowing my shares to be shared and having control over my user list. As far as obscure goes.. I'm not really sure what you're listening to but I've always found hard to find stuff (you call it weirdo music hehe) on slsk better than anywhere else with the exception of eMule. I guess it all comes down to personal preference. I prefer slsk.. easy to use, easy on memory and easy to control my files.

Since getting limewire i find that i end up with a lot more spyware, and all I use it for is music

No spyware here, but then again I have at least 3 programs for that purpose.

G-I got tired of being 'queued' on slsk, losing the connection, not finding what I want etc, and you yourself have cursed it plenty of times :lol:
The file control is really not much different-you designate and that's that, unlike Kazaa, which took over like some alien force.
Getting back to at least part of the original query, I do have one tiny, insignificant rant: large files that dial-up users share. It shouldn't take me an hour or more to download a 4 minute song with my cable, but because the one who has that file has their 56k, sometimes it shows that as the DL time!!!
Of course, with slsk, there's no way of knowing this til the dl starts, at which point I cuss and abort. Limewire shows the type of connection you will be dealing with, at least, so there's no surprises and no queuing for half a day.

What about WinMX?

winmx takes too long to download imo.

i'm a limewire user.

usually the only time I curse it is when a user is being stupid or the whole network goes down. You can get a general idea of how long a song is going to take using slsk by looking at the users avg. speed. This gives you a good idea on their upload speed.. the higher the number the better.

I don't mind ques because if I'm que'd I just go look for other people who have the same files or for other stuff that I want.. I don't think I've ever been que'd for an entire album for more than a few hours. Which isn't that bad especially if it's hard to find stuff.

I'm a slsk user, and I tried limewire. Lime slowed me down so much, I couldn't even type. I liked the options, but what it did to my pc, I'll never do it again.

WinMX has been shut down. Too bad. I remember when few people had even heard of it...

I really don't think speeds like 45k are even possible with a traditional analog modem. I just don't think Cat3 lines can carry that much data. 3-5k sounds right to me. Even for magical P2P.

Could somebody tell me if I am at risk by using limewire!? Is it legal? I am confused. I deleted it off the computer in fear of being prosecuted. I recently restarted my computer and there it was!! I want to use it again but am afraid. Anyone? :D

It is not legal. Now depending on your morals you may find it all unjust that you are 'stealing' music and paying nothing to the greedy record companies who initally were scared of the internet and hence wanted nothing to do with it. Look how times have changed.

Whether you want to use limewire or any other p2p or torrent is up to you. Your actions may cause a reaction - let that be a warning.

Then again there Music 'artist' can make money elsewhere. Sorry now i'm going off topic. So i shell stop... hope this goes some way to anwering your question.

Now, I don't agree with stealing music. I find it hard to believe that people have never borrowed and burned cds from friends... but whatever. Seems the same to me.

Most p2p .mp3s don't seem to be of that high quality. I mean, if you aren't an audiophile then that's ok, but if you want high quality stuff I would use .torrents. Torrents seem to either use lossless compression like FLAC, or high bit rate mp3s. The only time I use limewire or other p2p is when I just need one song to learn how to play. You shouldn't have to go out and buy the album just for a 3 minute long song.

I forgot to mention that Limewire and other p2p programs are legal, it's just what most people do with them that's not. Some independant artists release their songs onto p2p networks to get their stuff out there.

If you are concerned about legal action taken against you, don't be. They won't go after you unless you have 1000+ songs you are distibuting. My suggestion is if you have 1000+ songs, download a song, let it upload for a day or two, then stop sharing it.

Just a technical note.. it's not possible to get speeds that high on dial-up. A 56 Kbps modem will at most synch at (surprisingly) 56 kilobits per second. As Limewire to my knowledge measures transfer rates in bytes and not bits, that translates to a maximum possible speed of 7KB/s. Note that that's the theoretical maximum speed and you won't ever actually get that. 45 kB would have to be a faulty read. Either that or some funky caching thing.

Not to disprove you since you are right, but way back when I was on 56k I would download at 7 - 9 KB/s. Now I assume either it was a faulty reading or I was getting speeds of >56k, or (as you said) some wierd software thing. Is it possible for a 56k modem to go 56k+? Hell, I remember when 56k was blazing and personally I miss the days of pages being mostly text.

Limewire is no more as a freebie, apparently. We can connect but not actually get into it. And I still can't get what I'm looking for on slsk. :(

Is anyone using soulseek or any p2p anymore? Are there any relatively free from virus or trojans. I just got a new Dell and cable, I don't want to f*** it up but would like to download some music & movies. Any suggestions?

You can't use it to get music? I used it to get a song a couple days ago.

Apparently it'd been down for two weeks. It's back up as of a few days ago. Whew!!! My daughter was going through some SERIOUS music download withdrawal! :lol:

I haven't used SLSK in forever. Last I heard (few months ago), Limewire, SLSK, eMule, and a few other places were being hit pretty hard by RIAA fuckers.
