Which Stones Album Should I Buy?
Okay music fans, I'm in a Rolling Stones kind of mood, since I heard "Dear Doctor" and "Far Away Eyes", from Beggars Banquet ( I believe) and Some Girls respectively...
So which, in your opinion is better? |
Miss you was always a little too poppish for my tastes, really the best song on Some Girls album was Before They Make Me Run -
Beggars Banquet I'm not overly familiar with given the choices, I'd probably say none of the above and go for one of the greatest hits albums.. |
Although in my opinion Beggar's Banquet is the better of those two albums, I'm with Maleficent on this one. Pick up Hot Rocks (I still have my father's copy on vinyl!) or 40 Licks, and it'll keep you occupied for quite some time when the Stones urge arises.
|
My favorite has always been 'Sticky Fingers'. You won't be disappointed.
|
I haven't listened to any of these albums in full, but BB has some good songs on it. Still, 'Exile on main street' is their best album to me.
|
Of those two, I prefer SOME GIRLS by a slight margin, but that's probably because I was in college when it came out and heard it fresh; it wasn't until many years later that I heard BEGGARS BANQUET, and I wasn't as impressed with it beyond the singles on it.
If you are just starting with the Stones, you've received some good advice above about getting a greatest hits collection first. Yes, there'll be some duplication later if you decide to get deeper into the catalog, but frankly, the Stones were always a better singles band than album group. I know about how great albums of the Mick Taylor era were (LET IT BLEED, STICKY FINGERS and EXILE ON MAIN STREET, especially), but the majority of the best tracks from these are available on 40 LICKS. If someone has NOTHING and wants an album proper, start with STICKY FINGERS. |
you will have more notable hits on Some Girls... buuuut... Beggars banquet has a few of my all time fav. RS songs on it as well. If you want polished rock .. go with Some Girls.. if you want the band at the height of it's grittyness. .. go with BB. then go out and get It's Only Rock And Rolll... Goat heads Soup.. """ Exile On Main Street.. and someone mentioned Sticky Fingers.. Dont forget 'Let it Bleed ' of course.. U know what.. just buy one per month for the next two years and you should be set.

Why don't you buy Rolling Stones Greatest hits?
|
You're killing me -- I'd have a hard time choosing between Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed, Exile on Main Street, Sticky Fingers. I have lots of college / old girlfriend memories to Some Girls, but it just doesn't pack the punch of the older stuff -- tons more soul.
To answer your question -- Beggar's Banquet. Check out the other ones too. People are surprised that the Stones recorded country music. |
Good god, ya gotta get Beggars Banquet.
|
Sticky Fingers is my favorite (still got my copy with the working zipper)
I'd go with Hot Rocks if you are just getting into the Stones. |
I listened to BEGGAR'S BANQUET again last night, and it is of course anchored by a couple of well known Stones' tracks, "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Street Fighting Man." Beyond that, there were several acoustic based songs, maybe more so than any other Stones album, and more than I had remembered (I've never owned this record).
All in all, it wasn't bad, but I'd still go forward to the Mick Taylor years before suggesting this to a novice. |
Get the 3 disc Singles Collection "The London Years".
The Stones were never as great after Brian Jones was fired/died. It's sad they have become charicatures of themselves and corporate puppets, hawking anything for a buck. Maybe their new album and the way they deify Neo-cons will change my mind about them, maybe they do still have something left to say. |
Definitely go with Sticky Fingers.

Either Let it Bleed, or Flowers

And "Let It Bleed" is another of my favorites. |
I would pick Some Girls, but I actually like the disco-influenced Stones. Of that era though I would choose Black and Blue over Some Girls.
