Let's make a PUNK CD
Alright people. I need your help.
I want to make a good punk cd, one that's gonna be fast and hard, the truest, best representation of good punk music. So far I'm considering a lot of stuff from Rancid to Lagwagon, but I'd also like to have some older shit on there like Dead Kennedy's, Ramones, Sex Pistols, stuff that I don't necessarily know a lot about having been born long after this shit was published. So far I know I want to put: Cretin Hop by the Ramones Born to Lose by the Bouncing Souls If we get enough suggestions, I might even make a couple volumes, so HIT ME! |
Black Flag - Depression
|
Yeah, you've gotta put some Blag Flag on there.
I would put "Holiday in the Sun" as the Sex Pistols tune. |
Sweet, replies already!
Depression makes the list! Some nice hard punk, exactly what I was looking for. Holiday in the Sun, good choice it's on, the cd obviously needs some Sex Pistols, but I couldn't throw anything trendy on there. What do you guys think about "Buzzbomb" by the Dead Kennedy's? thanks for the responses! |
anything by the dead kennedys is good
Bad Religion 1000 more fools Dropkick Murphys- Fortunes of War |
All - "World's on Heroin" is always a great opener and "Last Caress" by the Misfits is always a great ender to any punk mix.
|
I was listening to Rancid at work this evening. That song "bloodclot" is quite badass. What are they up to these days? I haven't read or heard anything about them lately.
|
armstrong is in a band called the transplants, with the drummer from Blink 182 and another guy,( i forgot his name). I at least know that much...
for songs to put on a cd... have you thought about the clash? and NOFX (isn't as old as the Ramones but, they're still awesome.)! |
Quote:
Rancid is sort of second wave, admittedly the bouncing souls and nofx and those other bands are too, so I'd like to save their involvement for the second cd, or like I said, if we can't get enough old school punk to fill the first one. Bloodclot is a great song. I mean, let's face it, pretty much everything by Rancid is fucking great. Out Come the Wolves was (and still is) my favorite cd of all time. I guess my real problem with Rancid is which song do you pick? I mean, how about Salvation, but if we're gonna go there, then why not St. Mary, or Avenues and Alleyways, or even Maxwell Murders. And if we're into Rancid, then what about Op Ivy, there's no way I can keep Smiling, Knowledge, Unity or Here We Go Again off the list. So Rancid just sort of opens up the metaphorical can of worms you know? EDIT Actually I'm listening to Bloodclot right now, it's been awhile, and it's exactly the kind of song we're looking for. Totally high energy! Good pick, it's definitely on. EDIT As far as the Transplants go, they're cool, but (and maybe I'm a punk snob) but their sound, although punk, is really different from anything else we've been talking about. I hope I don't kill this whole idea by being a snob, it would just be great if we could get some old school shit on here, and unfortunately, I'm not old enough to remember enough of this to fill it by myself, it might be a problem that there aren't many around that are. Oh, and I think All "The World's on Heroin" is a great choice, that's definitely on, I haven't heard the Misfits song you're talking about, D/Ling now, but I definitely think the Misfits belong, I considered "Where Eagles Dare" but will wait to see "Last Caress". |
Hey man, you're not being a snob, you're just trying to make a very specific type of mix. A noble endeavor in my opinion. And while there maybe aren't many people who were down with the Clash in 1977 reading this thread, the music is still out there, you know...
Speaking of which, if you've got the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, you gotta have the Clash. I've already put in more than my two cents worth, so I'll let someone else suggest which old Clash song. |

and I wasn't saying put a transplants song.. I was just saying where Tim armstrong is..
and I think there are some better Misfits songs than Last Caress, IMO |
BondageGirl, you're right, I read that wrong.
You should pick a Nofx song! |
You definatly can't have a punk CD without the Clash. May I suggest some Anti-Flag, Choking Victim/Leftover Crack.
|
A NOFX song? Any of these will work
Linoleum Liza and Lousie Stickin' in My Eye The Decline (Although it's 18 minutes and change) |
how about some old school....?
stooges? |
The Bouncing Souls did an awesome cover of Anti Flag's "That's Youth"... in my opinion they did it better and with WAY more feeling than Justin Sane and AF ever did, though seeing both bands on stage singing that song together as one band was one of the best things I've ever seen. Descendents' one song called Hateful Notebook was pretty decent, one of the gems from Everything Sucks. "Scarred by Love" by the nobodys is good also, and it has the lead singer from the Queers doing vocals on it. Rancid's "Hyena" was always one of my favorites, along with "Urban Struggle" by The Vandals. If i can think of any more i'll post, and i'll pick my g/f's brain about the DK's, since she has nearly all of their albums... also, post a track list when youre finished, id be interested in making a comp like this for myself.
|
If you're going to do a punk CD, you NEED to have some Minor Threat on there. I'd recommend "Bottled Violence" or the song "Minor Threat". As an aside, an ex-girlfriend had no idea of punk, so I made her a punk sampler CD. The rules for it? No using a band more than once, and no more than 15 tracks. Here's what I put on it.
1. The Ramones - We're a Happy Family 2. Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen 3. The Descendents - Original Me 4. Bad Brains - Banned in D.C. 5. Minor Threat - Minor Threat 6. Bad Religion - Leaders & Followers 7. Operation Ivy - The Crowd 8. Dead Kennedys - California Uber Alles 9. Rancid - Roots Radicals 10. Pennywise - Unknown Road 11. Dropkick Murphys - Caps & Bottles 12. The Offspring - Dirty Magic 13. AFI - No Poetic Device 14. NOFX - Murder the Government 15. Propaghandi - Nailing Descartes to the Wall And a quick note on modern punk bands: if you ever need to analyze them, almost every punk band, at its core, just wants to imitate their idols. Don't believe me? Lars Frederiksen of Rancid has been quoted on numerous occasions as saying that he always wanted to be Joe Strummer when he grew up. The Offspring idolized Social Distortion. AFI is simply The Cure taken to the next logical level. Propaghandi is Bad Religion for the new millennium, and every pop punk band (who I despise) wants to be NOFX in the worst possible way. Anyway, above are some of my submissions for your punk CD. Notable by their absence are the Bouncing Souls, the Vandals, Agnostic Front, H2O, and the Clash. While all these bands are punk as fuck (The Clash not so much, but that's neither her nor there) I feel these tracks make up a damn good punk comp, and argue the strongest case for punk rock. I'd definitely give these songs a listen for your comp. Oh, and if you're going to use Rancid, there's about half a dozen better and more punk songs of theirs than Bloodclot. Listen to the following songs with your whole head: "Avenues and Alleyways", "7 Years Down," "Journey to the End of East Bay", "Let's Go", "Junkie Man", and "The War's End". |

A few others, which I had on a punk CD I made recently: Bad Religion - Generator AFI - Charles Atlas NoFX - Release the Hostages The Vandals - My Girlfriend's Dead Dropkick Murphys - Fighting 69th |
I wasn't thinking about Bad Brains as Punk, but wtf, they rock out... another band along that route is 24/7 Spyz...
|
The World's On Heroin made me think of another great song.... The Dwarves "Everybody's Girl". Good stuff.
|
I'd say The Gauntlet by Dropkick Murphy's, that song definantly has energy to spare.
|
You need to throw some Misfits on there. "Green Hell" or "Nike A-Go-Go" are good ones.
|
I'd use either No Control or I Want to Conquer the World from Bad Religion.
Also What the Fuck by Crass, Lexicon Devil by the Germs, Johnny's Got a Problem (D.I.), Hatebreeder by the Misfits, and Soup is Good Food from DK. |
Okay, I'm gonna update and post a new version of the list tonight. I didn't realize this had gotten so many replies. As for now I'm going bowling. Thanks for the input guys, I'll sort this out and see what we have.
|
let me know, im interested in this list
|
Hey, why not put Zeke and "Telepath Boy" on there? It´s kick-ass! A bit of garage mixed with old school punk.
|
Okay, so I'm posting what we have so far, some are locked and some are disputed, so I'll separate them out. This isn't the order the final list will be in. As for the order, I would suggest chronological, I think it will sound more interesting.
01. Cretin Hop - Ramones 02. World's on Heroin - All 03. Born to Lose - Bouncing Souls (possibly disputed) 04. Depression - Black Flag 05. Holiday in the Sun - Sex Pistols 06. Buzzbomb - the Dead Kennedy's (this can change, anything but California, I'm just so tired of that one) 07. Everybody's Girl - Dwarves 08. Unknown Road - Pennywise 09. The Gauntlet - Dropkick Murphy's (Fortunes of War?) 10. 1969 - The Stooges (I'll put it on if we can't find anything better) 11. Urban Struggle - The Vandals 12. Hateful Notebook - The Descendants (can I use them and ALL and not break the rules?) 13. Bottled Violence - Minor Threat Disputed Generator, No Control, I Want to Conquer the World by Bad Religion Bloodclot and just about anything else by Rancid (this is gonna be the hardest one, I like Bloodclot, because it's got the beat and tempo, but it sounds kind of 'produced' compared to the other stuff on the album') Green Hell, Last Caress, Where Eagles Dare, and others by the Misfits Murder the Government, Linoleum, Liza and Lousie, Stickin' in My Eye by Nofx I can't find Telepath boy, also looking for an Anti-Flag suggestion, as well as Choking Victim and Leftover Crack. I wouldn't mind someone picking a better Stooges song too. Also need Agnostic Front and h2O as Heel Turn suggested. Anyway, we're almost there, just a few more to go. Fuck, I forgot about Op Ivy. The Crowd was suggested, anything else? |
So how many songs you puttin' on? Bad Brains I, or Banned in DC, or With the Quickness....
Once you put this together, how many copies you making? I'll paypal you for one... I'm too lazy to make my own.. |
two of my faves to add:
nailbomb - "wasting away" suicidal tendencies - "institutionalized" |
my suggestions
-social distortion-i was wrong -social distortion-don't drag me down -social distortion-story of my life -nOfX-please play this song on the radio -NoFx-the idiots are taking over -nofx-we threw gasoline on the fire and now we have stumps for arms and no eyebrows -noFX-Decline (this is if you have 18:30minutes on your cd left..yes it is an 18 minute punk song) -nofx-I am the one (rancid cover) -Rancid-Vanilla Sex (nofx cover) -unwritten law-up all night (studio version good, unplugged version from the From high places album better IMO) -lagwagon-May 16th -AFI-last carress (misfits cover) -Mad Caddies-We'll start to worry when the cynics start believing -Millencolin-No Cigar -Millencolin-Losin must -Osker-strangled that should hold ya for now |
put something from Devin Townsends Punky Bruister release.. hehe..
like Wallet Chain.. or Fake punk |

the stooges - search and destroy
|
Fear!@$ what about fear
Fear- I don't care about you |
Maybe a bit of The Exploited should be on here too? My personal favourite is "Beat The Bastards"
|
If youre looking for an Anti Flag suggestion, go with "Thats Youth" or maybe "Captain Anarchy." Of your choices for a NOFX song, id have to say "Stickin' in My Eye" or go with "El Lay."
|
old
no one mentioned the buzzcocks - what do i get? new blood brothers - burn piano island fugazi - life and limb planes mistaken for stars - the past two ikara colt - one note sleater-kinney - oh thursday - paris in flames at the drive-in - invalid litter dept. and you will know us by the trail of dead - homage sightings - michigan haters what do you mean by "truest"? do you want to show a progression of the scene in time? or just the old school, which is arbitrarily "truer" than the new? |
Those are some good suggestions, unfortunately I have to go to work.
What I mean by truest is, I want older stuff, first and second wave, and none of this pop shit. Like no offense to the Nofx people, but to me that borders on the edge of being too pop for punk, voices always seem to high to me, and don't get me started on Jello (he's just lucky the rest of the band kicks so much ass). I personally would prefer something with a harder edge, which is why we might want to do two cds, an old school punk cd, and a new school where there's more room to play. |
!!!!!
I don't see how anyone could think of NOFX as pop, seeing as how they go out of their way to avoid the MTV crowd. They don't make music videos for new releases and they don't allow MTV to play their older videos. Just my two cents. |
Add some CEPHAS, my mates band... jsut played at the garage in London supporting ruben *www.cephas.info*
/plug |
You're right Bob, Nofx isn't pop, I don't know why I'm so biased against them.
Anyway they definitely deserve the label "punk" |
damn, this is turning into a good cd
|
Alrighty, I can't believe I'm only the third person to mention Operation Ivy! Besides the crowd, try 'Yellin in my ear' and 'Black Flag'
|
This all depends on whether you are trying to make a CD that is punk by sound or punk by ideaology.
Punk by sound included bands such as the Vandals, Bad Religion, NOFX, Lagwagon, AFI, etc. Punk by ideaology, (Which is punk that is punk because of it's lyrical content and message), would still include Bad Religion and old (YES OLD) NoFX, but would also include the RX Bandits, Propagandhi, Sage Francis (yes, he's a rapper, but his lyrics match up to those of BR), BigWig (I'm surprised nobody has mentioned them before) and Bob Dylan. These were bands/people that are punk in their want for the reform of society to make a better whole for us all. Punk isn't about power chords and a fast beat, it's about a message that was originally delivered by people who had no other way to convey it but through music. So, my friend, I ask you, which punk are you trying to make a mix of? |
RatherThanWords,
first and foremost punk by sound. I'm all about the a-chord, fast beats, and energy. You have an excellent point, unfortunately Phil Ochs doesn't get a spot on this cd. ;-) The rest of you. The Gauntlet - Dropkick Murphy's (Skinhead on the MBTA as a closer?) 10. Search and Destroy- The Stooges 11. Urban Struggle - The Vandals 12. Hateful Notebook - The Descendants (can I use them and ALL and not break the rules?) 13. Bottled Violence - Minor Threat 14. Institutionalized - Suicidal Tendencies 15. I was wrong - Social Distortion 16. Beat the Bastards - The Exploited 17. I don't care about you - Fear 18. Life and Limb - Fugazi 19. Yellin in my Ear - Operation Ivy (love that song) 20. No Control - Bad Religion 21. Linoleum - Nofx 22. What Do I Get? - Buzzcocks (can I use this song if they sold it to a volkswagen commercial?) You want fries with that? Seriously, am I missing anything? I'm trying to find a way to host this somewhere, but until then, Kazaa seems to work nicely. I've been working my ass off, so I'm gonna sit down and watch Adaptation. Have fun kids. |
Fear - I Love Living In The City
Op Ivy - Yelling in my ear, Sound System or Room without a window. Low Class Brats - Sex And Violence(not a cover of the exploited one.) Nekromantix - Who Killed The Cheerleader Agent orange - Blood Stains Rancid - Hyena Buzzcocks - Orgasm Adict Circle Jerks - Wild In The Streets or Live Fast Die Young GBH - I Am The Hunted The Adolescents - Amoeba Peter And The Test Tube Babies - Banned From The Pubs (or the cover by Filth) Anti-Flag - Indie Sucks, Hard Line sucks, Emo Sucks, You Suck Lars Fredrikson And The Bastards - Army of Zombies or Dead American Billy Idol/ Generation X - Dancing With Myself The Distillers - That Young Crazed Peeling(not feeling) The Dickies - Gigantor Sex Pistols - Friggin' In the Riggin' Blatz - Fuck Shit Up Screeching Weasel - Cool Kids The Queers - Punk Rock Girls The Weirdos - Solitary Confinement(Circle Jerks and Dickies both do covers but I think the original is best) Man, i suggested too many songs. Meh. |
Alright...Punk By sound... here's my list then :)
1) Bigwig - Falling Down 2) Against All Authority - All Fall Down 3) Propagandhi - Stick the Fucking Flag up Your Ass... 4) Agent Orange - Everything Turns Grey 5) Bad Religion - Generator 6) INDK - Rent For Sale 7) Rancid - Axiom 8) NoFX - Linoleum 9) No Use For A Name - 51 Days 10) Vandals - Euro-Barge 11) Union 13 - Youth, Betrayel, and The Awakening 12) Suicide Machines - DDT 13) Strung Out - Damned 14) SNFU - Rusty Rake 15) Goldfinger - Open Your Eyes 16) Good Riddance - Fire Engine Red :) Many of those songs are Punk by sound and ideaology :) |

The 4-Skins - Evil Becks Pistols - Pöbel und gesocks Those are great hard'n'fast songs |
RatherThanWords,
That's a good list, a few of those I don't have on cd, and am downloading. Thanks for your input. I kind of gave up on the whole punk cd after I made my original one. I gave one away, and this girl claimed to like it, but I had the feeling she didn't listen to any of it. Anyways it gave me the feeling that maybe the most useful part of this thread, is for people who like punk, to explore some new stuff, and that's what I've been doing with all your posts. So those of you who have something to add, I'll be sure to check in and download some stuff, it's not like anyone advertises good punk, the only way to spread the news is by word of mouth. And for those of you reading this thread who haven't ever heard any punk, download some of this stuff at random, if you don't like it, so sorry, but if you do, get on this board and we can all explore some shit together. Thanks to everyone who has posted. peace, Skettios. |
