Micheal Jackson Greatest Hits sells......

8,000 in it's debut week.
that averages 400 per state......
Of course he'll blame Sony of being racist and not marketing him......

Has nothing to do with the trial or the fact he likes small boys.....

Carly Simon's sold 58,000 in her first week over the same time period......

Wow... I didn't even know his Greatest Hits was being released...

Regardless of his trial, I saw absolutely no marketing or advertising for this... I realize this is probably *because* of the trial, etc. but to see nothing at all.

That's just asking for a loss. Why not wait and release it at a later date?

I would have waited the extra while to release a greatest hits album. It's still too close to the trial. I mean, that, and one can only be accused of sleeping with boys so many times before society gives up on a person.

They really didn't market it at all. And Michael Jackson really could use the money, so he probably WILL go on a rant.

Yeah, like the others, I didn't even know he had a Greatest Hits coming out, I could possibly consider buying it.

How about visual proof of molesting a child ala R. Kelly, nobody seems to care about that.

Not unless there are only 20 states, might suggest you check your math.

Had to check who actually had it - Amazon was linking to the sony music store...

The Essential Michael Jackson

the Essential... Series have covered pretty much every major music star from the past 3 decades- -some of them are better than others... Some on the series ,I am amazed they came up with enough greatest hits for a cd...

Quote:
Includes 38 of Michael Jackson's greatest hits from over three decades of classic songs. Essential Michael Jackson includes songs from his time in the Jackson 5 to his multi-platinum albums such as Bad, Dangerous, Thriller, and Invincible. Songs include the hits "Thriller", "Bad", "Billie Jean", "ABC", "You Rock My World", and "Smooth Criminal
for 17 bucks... doesnt seem like a bad deal....

Disc/Side 1
1. I Want You Back
2. ABC
3. The Love You Save
4. Got To Be There
5. Rockin' Robin
6. Ben
7. Enjoy Yourself

9. Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)
10. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough

You're right it's only 160 per state........ that's even sadder. I didn't even think about the math I heard this on the radio and just basically typed as they talked.

What's even scarier and a sign the whole music industry is dying ..... Carly Simon sells only 58,000 and is #7 on the charts....

His 8,000 is worthy of 128 on the charts???????.....

Back in the day selling low numbers like that wouldn't get you even close to the charts....... where it would get you is the cut out bin where they sold you for pennies..... and the production of that album would be stopped immediately.

Here's the article and link:

Jackson album fails to wow US fans

Michael Jackson’s new album sold just 8,000 copies in its first week in the United States.

The singer’s sixth greatest hits album, The Essential Michael Jackson, limped into the charts at number 128 as fans appeared to snub the star.

The figures will come as a huge blow to the one-time King of Pop, who had hoped to make a comeback after being acquitted of child sex abuse last month.

The Jackson album was beaten by the likes of 1970s star Carly Simon, whose new CD Moonlight Serenade entered the chart at number seven, and the Dukes of Hazzard soundtrack.

A spokeswoman for Nielsen Soundscan, which monitors US record sales, said: “Michael Jackson is quite a way down there. Carly Simon sold 50,000 albums more than him.

“Christian singer Guy Penrod even sold 11,000 copies of his new record.”

Jackson, 46, has sold more than 300 million albums since he first hit the charts as a child with the Jackson 5. His new album was launched by Sony BMG last week.

The two-disc set includes songs spanning his entire career, from 1970’s I Want You Back to 2001’s You Rock My World.

The singer’s sixth greatest hits album,
Perhaps anyone who still cares about him either bought one of the previous 5 greatest hits, or has the complete catalog of regular releases already?

Another truism, but 8,000?????? That's just sad, very sad. The Beatles can put their name on anything and it goes straight to #1, even if the released album contains the same exact songs as every other album.

I just think this proves there is NO interest in Jackson anymore.

Of course as stated above when selling 8,000 puts you at #127 for the week or selling 58,000 (as with Carly Simon) puts you at #7 something is either seriously wrong in the music industry and they aren't selling shit..... or it was a very slow week for sales.

Either way this maybe more telling about the industry's problems then the artists.

The fact that it is the 6th version of the "Greatest Hits" put him in the catagory of The Beach Boys in terms of recycling; worse, if this one only covers his output from 1979 (OFF THE WALL) to now, as that is only about a half-dozen albums over that time. That it is part of the ESSENTIAL series makes it half-justified, but as the others here, the timing of the release is highly questionable from a marketing standpoint.

Then again, I too hadn't heard a sound about this being released, so there may not be any marketing (or it's placed where I wouldn't be likely to hear it).

I like the observation that it is 400 per state, but seriously, I doubt this release will ever sell 400 in Wyoming. Or South Dakota. Or Hawaii. Or . . .

Kinda sad what happened to his career.

I mean, he's Michael Jackson. Face transformations aside, he's had a huge impact in music... but like with anyone else, got older and had to face changing times.

It's like anything he released after Thriller was just a joke.

Now what was once a brilliant performer is just someone who's struggling to keep his "King of Pop" title. In his mind, he so desperately wants to keep his fame alive, but it's been so utterly destroyed in the past few years.

I'm sure he could just go on a few world tours to make his $$ back, but... yeah, kinda sad.

You'd figure his Greatest Hits would sell more than fuckin 8k copies, hah.

I don't exactly picture MJ as someone who's very mentally stable, and (I don't mean to sound incredibly rude or morbid w/ this) I'm surprised he hasn't made attempts to off himself.. I just don't picture someone like him facing reality in knowing when it's really over.

But I guess that's just the thing every musician has to face - some have made wonderful marks in history (Metallica, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, to name a few), but REALLY don't know when to stop. Eventually they just run out of ideas and keep releasing stuff just to release it, and in the process, make a mockery of their past.

the problem with these 'greatest hits' or 'the essential...' series from sony... is there's nothing new on the cds... I have 3 michael jackson cd's -- the songs that are on "the essential..." cd I have on each on the cds I already have... Any music I get these days, goes directly into my IPod - and I don't think I am unique here... I dont need another cd that already has all the same music that I have already.

I think that any performer who's been around for more than a decade, and has put out more than one 'greatest hits' cd, will have a tough time selling an additional 'greatest hits' cd unless it's got new stuff on it...

Unless you are truly a fan, there's no reason to get the new cd...

I'm not sure who Sony is marketing these "essential" cd's to... the most logical would be to the generation that didn't grow up listening to the artists... but they don't seem to be doing a very good job of it.

The last Essential cd i got was Bruce Springsteens... and I didn't buy it -I am a lifelong Bruce fan.... Love his music.. but I couldn't see spending the money on a CD that I already had pretty much every song that was on the cd... I don't play cd's at home anymore, my ipod goes into my sounddock... and I'll play bruce that way....

Yeah it seems that despite having just been acquitted on the molestation charges, the general public still considers him a complete chester. Everything I've read about the case doesn't exactly portray the kid's mother or the DA as being, well, credible. I'll stand by MJ though, the man broke ground in music and dance. The early stuff is amazing. Why did he do that to his face? I don't know.

I won't be buying this though as 'greatest hits' are for squares. [rummages for "Off the Wall" LP] [opens gatefold sleeve] Michael you were so handsome! Why?
