OMG.. the new OPETH is .....
Inspired, it is a natural progression but still quite shocking. I have thought of them to be one of the best ensemble of musicians for thier genre and .. many others btw.. but this disc just takes it to the next level. This is the best disc of 2005... imo. This may be the one that actually pushs them more mainstream as far as fan base.. allthough thier songs are still to long for radio I dont think it is going to matter... Strapping Young Lad had the opportunity but ALIEN allthough good in many, many ways.. was produced with the drums and vocals to much forward and the guitars were not showcased as one would expect with SYL... again just my opinion .. but it is the opinion of one that has been listening to everything Devon Townsend has been doing since the Steve Vai days... more so once he created SYL.. btw.. ALIEN os still a great disc and a natural progression for SYL as well..... just teh damn production.... anyhow.. I am blabbering at this point.

Yes, Ghost Reveries is by far the best release of 2005, but then again I'm a huge Opeth fanboy, so take that with a grain of salt. I've been bumping the Opeth.com Updated thread for a while, but I guess it's time to move on to a new thread. Haven't put this album down since I obtained it 4 days ago. Brilliant stuff, their most diverse album ever.
|
It is just a more mature OPETH ... everything is exactly where it should be .. a crystal clear vision realized. Cannot wait for them to come back around... may not be able to see these guys in small venues much longer....
|
I just downloaded this last night, all I have to say is wow! This CD is really fucking good. I am definately going to make sure to buy this one when it comes out. A lot of people have been complaining about The Grand Conjuration, but I rather like it. It certainly isn't the shining star of the album, but still good IMO.
The next big release I am waiting for now is the new Nevermore. |
Nevermore is out already, as is the new Naglfar. (I don't know why I threw that in there, I was just really surprised to see it at Best Buy yesterday.)
|
Holy shit, where have I been? I thought it wasn't going to be released until late August for some reason. To Best Buy I go!
|
Is this like Damnation at all? ie softer more melodic - and no/limited death metal vocals. I really like a lot of Opeth's stuff, especilaly the change ups of softer melodic pace inside the heavy stuff, although i really dislike the death metal vocals.
|
killeena -- it's not released until August 30th, but it has leaked onto the internet.
sleepy: This is by far their most mellow release, aside from Damnation. There are death metal vocals, but there seems to be more clean vocals than death. There's 3 songs that are completely clean. |
Ghost Reveries is amazing. It is Opeth's most "progressive" album ever.
|
It's set to play right after I finish listening to the new Fear Factory album :D
I await with anticipation ^_^ |
The new Nevemore is one of thier best ever.
|
I could never get into Opeth. I'm big into prog, Dream Theater, Rush, Pain of Salvation, ect.....but I just could never appreciate Opeth. Maybe I'll check out this new album.
|
Ghost Reveries is certainly amazing, though i don't have much to say on it cause i've already posted in the older thread
|
well Zephyr66.. I am talking about the entire disc.. not just what they have made available up to now... I have had the leak for over a month.

Opeth's progginess is more of the Camel, King Crimson side of things. |
The new Opeth is the best album of the year. And no, this is not the fanboi in me talking. I'm dead serious. Of all the albums of 2005 that I've listened to, not one comes even remotely close.
--jaded |
I agree Jaded. I think Beneath the Mire is my favorite right now... it would be perfect if the dueling guitar/mellotron at the beginning wasn't there. However, the harmonized guitar and keyboard in the middle proggy section is absolutely fucking classic, and Mike's singing is probably the best he's ever done there. Short and sweet.
BTW there is now Opeth discussion in the Tool thread. Come back me up, fellow fanboy. |
Got tix for Opeth live in Paris, France on the 13th of September. Fuck...yes!
--jaded |
I like it. Opeth's doing their thing, and they're doing it well.
Here's the music video for The Grand Conjuration: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/art...eth/video.aspx wtf snake |
Anyone know if the rumours of them joining Children of Bodom on their next tour with Amon Amarth and Trivium are true?

If only they would come play live around here. :( My boss who is big into progressive rock says he loves their music but he thinks Mikael sounds like the Cookie Monster during the growly vocals. It doesn't bother me one bit, so to each their own, I suppose. |

That sucks, I guess I won't be seeing opeth this year, cause Bodom > Opeth, but that's my opinion. Plus Amon Amarth will be there. |
Bodom > Opeth? Prepare to defend yourself!
|
Is there any Opeth that isn't so gloomy?
|
Opeth is pretty gloomy... the only song that really doesn't have an outright sad feel to it is Atonement from the new album, which is not a good song really.

Opeth live tomorrow! I'll make sure to post the set-list/impressions!

^Feel my burning envy.

Opeth Live at La Loco, Paris September 13th 2005.
Pretty fucking great show although there were a couple of songs I would have liked to hear that weren't played. Setlist: Baying of the hounds When Deliverance Hope Leaves In My Time of Need The Grand Conjuration Face of Melinda Blackwater Park Demon of the Fall Pretty solid list, but I needed more material from "Still Life" instead of the two "Damnation" tracks. Two in a row was too much in my opinion. Mikael's voice was top notch this evening, and the drummer from Bloodbath did a good job filling in for Martin Lopez, although at times you could hear him playing things a bit differently. Nothing major, just a little...odd at times :) I have to say that the track that impressed me the most was by far "The Grand Conjuration". Some feel that song is OK on the album but I tell ya, it is absolutely amazing live! Runner-up would be Blackwater Park, well-played and one of my favorite Opeth tracks of all-time. Least favorite tracks would be the two damnation songs. They are good, but I wish they would have played "The Moor" or something else off Still Life instead. --jaded |
That seems like a pretty short setlist, but my only experience with Opeth live is the Lamentations DVD so it's probably normal. Hope they play Ghost of Perdition the show I'll be attending. Can't wait to see them and Pelican on 10/10. I hear Pelican rocks the house. I'll have to check out Fireball Ministry, their second opening band.
|
All of the setlists I've seen have only had the same 2 GR songs. I find it a little odd, since usually a band will tour to promote their new album...
Actually, it's a good thing when old fans are complaining about the lack of new material in a setlist... I'd love for Harlequin Forest, GoP, and BtM to be played.. |
Hey and remember, the US tour is underway; I went to the show at The Fillmore last night. Good stuff. Mikael is hilarious. (Not in order) they played:
The Grand Conjuration Blackwater Park The Moor Bleak In My Time of Need Deliverance Demon of the Fall Maybe some others can't remember/don't know |
Sweet jesus, I just lost my GR cd in a public computer after i forgot to take it out...
I hate myself. Quote:

Got back from the LA showing. Setlist is approximately:
Baying of the Hounds When Bleak The Moor In My Time of Need The Grand Conjuration Deliverance Blackwater Park Demon of the Fall It was awesome to say the least. |
Fuck....The Moor live...that is to die for.
Oh well, they're playing Paris again in december! Got my tickets :D --jaded |
frankly, the album bores me.
too much wanky-floaty-keyboards. steve wilson is cool, but he left a bad influence on the boys. |
