After hearing it again today, I'm pretty sure it was the Amy Grant version. I mentioned the song to a co-worker and she responded, "I dunno... I kinda like it."

She no longer will be the one I go to to point out shitty music.

... and while it's probably more nonsense than anything else... (god forgive me for doing this, but Pat Boone was mentioned, you cannot have a discussion about really bad cover songs without including the lovely Wing.

http://www.wingtunes.com/public/samples.aspx
If you are brave, give a listen to I want to hold your hand... and if your ears don't start bleeding, you are a better person than I am - But you have to listen to the end of the sample -because her back up singers and her hitting that high note are worth the giggles you will get...

Wow. Just wow.

Also, from her "About" page, "I have worked hard and I hope you have all found I am improving." Right, that sample was from her 8th disc. I will NOT click on the sample from her first disc.

Sorry, TA, but I've got you WAY beat for second post.

Everyone, please observe the single WORST cover of ALL TIME, my high school garage band's interpretation of Comfortably Numb.

It's not just bad. It crosses the line into wretched. I'm the poor schmuck on lead vocals (the lower line) and guitar. My kid brother is on drums, my friend Garrett playing bass, and my friend Rudi doing his best with a harmony line that's just too damn high for him. Oh, and a keyboard line that requires him to quit listening to the rest of the band and concentrate.

I had forgotten entirely we created this monstrosity until I was digitizing the tape last night. I actually still have no memory of it--I must have repressed this whole song. There was some really good stuff on that tape... And then there was this.

My hat is off to you-- you are a brave man for showing that off... every so often y'all manage to find the melody and play together... ya just needed more practice...

That scream towards the end is priceless...

Y'all were probably cute and got all the chicks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But Wing, is still by far the worst ever... She was given money by her country to record those tracks (Kinda makes a really good argument against the NEA and she does t hat professionally (Ok to deaf people in rest homes and people in comas in hospitals... but she still gets paid.
It baffles me that within a year of the Counting Crows releasing their cover of it, that Amy Grant would release a cover of it as well....wtf Amy, do a cover of something else, like Mr. Brownstone, by Guns 'n Roses.
Amy's cover came out a long time ago. She released it on 1994's "House of Love" Counting Crow's release come out in 2003.
An extremely generous assessment. I sent it to the harmony singer this morning, and he AIMed me one line: "ears... bleeding...."
Both made me shudder in disgust.
Colonel, you are referring to John Coltrane's version. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and mine is: you mis-understand this music. It's not Julie Andrews, that's for sure, but it's not supposed to be.Spend some time listening to John Coltrane before passing judgement on this amazing work of art.
Or don't
...whatever.
Peace.
To be fair, I've heard EXTREMELY lengthy and repetitive muzak versions of My Favorite Things that leave me cringing. I agree that Trane's My Favorite Things is virtuosity itself, but that may not be what the Good Colonel is talking about.
Aha! You wouldn't be thinking of the John Coltrane version would you? In which case, shame on you! SHAME!!! Edit: Dang, you think I'd know better than to post without reading the whole thread.
What about all those ska-punk covers that emerged a couple of years back, that whole fad for reviving shit 80s songs with a wink of irony and the parp of a trumpet? Load of fucking shit.
That said, the Vandals' cover of 'So Long, Farewell' is a wonderful, wonderful thing.
Lol, I'm not sure I see much to love in either... In my opinion they are two worlds that should remain disconsolately separate, both from each other, and from me.
Ratbastid's confession has reminded me of the covers band I was in once upon a time. We butchered all kinds of stuff - Janey Jones by the Clash, Ruby Soho by Rancid, Screamager by Therapy?, White Jesus by Everlast, a couple of Green Day songs, and there was even an ill-advised cover of Last Nite by The Strokes, that just fucking bit.
But yea, we also did Comfortably Numb. Oh the horror...
i dont find anything at all wrong with your cover of Comfortably Numb. sure it sucked balls, but the point is you guys were amateurs. now as far as these other artists go (avril, britney, counting crows)....they are professionals (or at least they claim to be) and their music is still a steaming pile of pony loaf. anywho, no one gets anywhere without the guts to try, and you guys were tryin, so i give you points for that.
as far as the worst covers, well....i've heard some pretty bad punk covers of "take on me" by A-ha, "love song" by the cure, etc. i'm a big fan of covers if they're done correctly, but hell, people these days just don't know how to do justice to songs anymore. *shakes head*
