All-Time Favorite Female Vocalist (poll)
This poll is biased, since I chose the poll options. :P
Ella Fitzgerald
Tina Turner. I could watch her (legs) sing all day.
Gladys Knight.
None of the above: Its gotta be Sarah Vaughan
I'd choose the chick from Kidneythieves (can't remember her name) but from the list above perhaps Tori Amos.
out of those??
Tori and Bjork. amazing 'gals' |
delores o'riordan from the cranberries!!!!

Another bump for Sarah Vaughan! Bjork has been doing it for me lately though, but no way ALL TIME.
Natalie Merchant would be on top of my list. I dont like all of the stuff she did, but her voice is great.
i have such a thing for bjork. she totally has to win.
Sarah Mclachlan has an amazing voice, and writes fabulous songs btw. Pick up a couple of her albums. :)
janis joplin rocks...
Personally, I'd have to say Billie Holiday. But from the list definitely Fiona Apple. She is incredible. She's got an original voice and she's one helluva piano player.
Out of the list above: Bjork
My personal choice: Chan Marshall (Cat Power); never has a chain smoker sounded so good |
where's Whitney??? She currently my favorite female singer.
I have a sweet tooth for female-fronted metal bands so I can't pick just one.
Tarja Tarunen - Nightwish Angela Gossow - Arch Enemy Christina Scabbia - Lacuna Coil Anneke from The Gathering Karyn Crisis - Crisis Hayley Windsor - Antimatter |
Of those listed I voted for Fionna Apple, though mainly because her songs have had the most impact on me and not because I think she is the most talented. I would say that Norah Jones is my favorite female vocalist of all time. I was driving through the mountains when I first heard her song "Don't Know Why". I loved it and bought the album and loved that. This was a month or two before she became big and many months before she won her grammies. Thankfully I have not listened to much FM radio latley or I imagine I would be sick of hearing her songs.
I am all about female singers. I have so many that I listen to but Sarah McLachlan still moves me the most. I LOVE the sound of her voice and the pain and passion she exudes.
Also, I am amazed by Amy Lee's voice. (from Evanescence) Listen to "My Immortal" and you'll agree. |
Deflok's got one of mine with the woman from Kindney Theives, and I also gotta add Brody Armstrong from the Distillers.
Chrissie Hynde. I wasn't aware that Madonna was a vocalist.
More previously unmentioned nominees:
Jean Smith (Mecca Normal) Carla Bozulich (Geraldine Fibbers, Ethyl Meatplow) Ari Up (The Slits) Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) Kim Deal (Pixies, Breeders, the Amps) Carrie Brownstein, Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney) Satomi Matsuzaki (Deerhoof) Lesley Rankine (Silverfish, Ruby) Liz Phair Yasuko O. (Melt-Banana) Amber Valentine (Jucifer) |
Another vote for Chan Marshall. Or Kim Gordon. but since they're not listed in the poll, PJ Harvey all the way.
Janis Joplin would get my vote. I know no one better than her.
heather nova.
Mariah Carey. No contest, no matter what you guys say!!!

the above list is entirely too limited... great choices... but when you say favorite "all time"... you're leaving out an entire generation of amazing female musicians who in reality, paved the way for the artists listed above... Janis Joplin Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart) Joan Jett Chrissy Hynde Pat Benatar Wendy O. Williams Deborah Harry i know i am forgetting many... these are just off the top of my head... |
beth gibbons from portishead is one of my favorites
Ani DiFranco
Yup, I won. |
I'd have to say Lisa "left-eye" Lopez or Lauren HIll,
But since they aren't there Tori Amos for her cover of Nirvana's Smells like teen Spirit |
what no Christina Scabia? Sacrelige :)
Amy Lee
I'm gonna go with the two Bobs and say Cat Power. Saw her live, she had this compelling, powerful, yet shy and unsure of herself kinda presence.
Female Singer from Lacuna Coil... (not sure of her name, but they were Evanescense well before they came out)
Melanie Wells (from the band One True Thing...she also sings on From Autumn To Ashes' "Short Stories w/ Tragic Endings) |

bjork, no question. not really my taste of music. i listen to psychopathic...twiztid, icp etc. and hip-hop.
as far as musically, she is a genius IMO. and i love her voice. its definitely one of a kind. i got tickets and im actually going to her concert at red rocks in august...my girlfriend loves bjorks music, its just about all she listens to. hopefully it will be a good time. |
Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde is by far my favorite vocalist, male or female. She can hold a note in an impossible pitch while playing some mean bass guitar. Very rarely does music make my spine tingle, but she does it on more than a few songs. Live versions of "The Sky Is A Poisonous Garden" and Haunted Head", "Heal It Up" and Jesus Please Forgive Me (For The Things I'm About To Say" all make my spine tingle.
From the survey, Tori Amos has a very pretty voice, PJ Harvey is good, and Bjork is of course awesome. |

Out of those listed, I voted for Fiona Apple and Tori Amos (that's what you get for putting checkboxes instead of radio buttons ;)) Fiona because, vocally, she's a better singer, and Tori because, overall, she's a better, more impacting musician. (Not to take away from Fiona AT ALL though, because she's an excellent and powerful musician as well.) Can't say I'm not surprised Bjork is doing so well though...I can't stand her. |
Janis Joplin. Then Nina Simone. Not either of them are on your list, though. :-p
