I just recently got into it and have been listenign to engine 54 and i voted for kodos

What kind of ska are you looking for?

I like a lot of the third wave stuff like Less than Jake, Catch 22 ( only Keasbey Nights - the other albums are decent but that cd is AMAZING.), Streetlight Manifesto ( a collaberation between One Cool Guy and Catch22 ), Mustard Plug, Operation Ivy, Suicide Machines, Goldfinger, etc.

Also, Ive been told to check out screeching weasel, The Hippos,The Pietasters, The Toasters, No Reason Why, The Donkey Show and a few other but I havnt had time to check them out.

the only recent stuff I've been digging is the Rx Bandits, which is barely ska anymore. Definitely a band that everyone needs to check out.

Yep. RX bandits are great - I remember finding them back in the good 'ol days on napster and had pretty much their entire first cd downloaded, which I eventually bought. It was a great cd so when the new one came out I got it. Its not the same sound or style as before really but I still like them a lot and its good to see that they are branching out a bit and changing their style (even though I liked them the way they were).

The Toasters and Pietasters are pretty good. Screeching Weasel is pop-punk, not ska. I don't think I've heard of the others.

Planet Smashers, Suburban Legends, Mad Caddies, Big D and the Kids Table are my favorite ska bands not previously mentioned.

I'm mostly a 3rd waver, then 2nd, not so much old-school. It might be hard to find, but the ska-funk combination of Perfect Thyroid was one of my all-time favorites. They had a lead singer with a perfecly-clear baritone voice, three other guys who could sing well, good horns, and the drummer's rhythms were amazingly complex.

I voted for kodos is good stuff, from Madison WI...yay something from WI for once. Less Than Jake in one of my favorites too. Mu330 is pretty good, the specials, pietasters, some people call Goldfinger ska, i guess it qualifies.

Not the easiest stuff to find but there's this band from Florida called Skif Dank that I enjoy immensly. They haven't released an album in years. Last time I even saw them do a show was the beginning of 2003. Who knows if they're even still together? Either way try and find some of their stuff.

Heh, I used to be in a ska band, but it's always amazing the sheer number of people who say "What's ska?" Ah well, more for me...or something.

But there's also the Christian ska bands which are pretty good as well. Five Iron Frenzy (Every New Day is a song of theirs to check out) has a lighter style and a tendancy towards silliness; Insyderz are a bit on the metal side at times and the Supertones have good all-around sound, and their bassist is awesome (although he left the band a year ago). FiF broke up last year and Insyderz haven't made an album for years...I think all sorts of ska is just not being popular anymore. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy it.

Oh, and if you're more into swing/ska, check out Hipster Daddy-O and the Hand Grenades. Such good stuff, but good luck finding their music; I stumbled on it in a swing pack I downloaded, but haven't seen them in stores anywhere.

King Apparatus - another hard to find band. The only one i've ever heard pull off great ska with no horns.

Reel Big Fish's new album was released yesterday, with a typcially upbeat title of "We're Not Happy 'til You're Not Happy". If you like them, you'll like this album. I already have "One Hit Wonderful" stuck in my head.

haha I can imagine the beat to that song without ever having heard it. For some reason most RBF songs sound the same to me. I'll have to check it out anyway though.

I always forget whether it was them or The Spitvalves that broke up but I'm guessing it was the Spitvalves. I still have a debt to them for printing up a schedule and handing it out at the first Warped Tour show I ever went to lol.

I never understood this new stuff they are calling ska. I think ska died in the late 60's. It had a revival in the late 70's with all the british punkers that were into old reggae songs and put there own little twist on it. That diluted the music, but it still had its moments (very rare ones).

But today, it is so much farther removed form what it was originially. They need a new name for it (sorry, I'm just a bitter real ska fan).

Ska Weekend in Knoxville, TN coming up next Skaturday. 4 stages, 30 bands. Going to be awesome.

I saw Less Than Jake Friday night, they put on helluva show, mostly old stuff and their new album is going to be ska. Qualtiy. My calves hurt from skanking so much.

Friday night at Bogarts? LTJ put on a pretty good show. Their new songs sounded good, hopefully the rest of their new cd will be like that.
