i'd like to recommend something.
i've heard just about everything there is to hear, and it's all pretty good. but, it tends to get a little repeditave, when people don't try to do new things with music. not to say that they don't ever try, because new and interesting music pops up all the time, but i find myself getting really tired of the same old tastless jokes about sex and the like. bands like the Dresden Dolls that offer a realy new and unique sound, but mundane lyrics, are really good to listen to, but kind of hard for me to identify with. personally, the only music i've found myself listening to anymore is that of the bands made by a man named Stephin Merritt. i don't know if many people would like him; most people tell me i have a bad taste in music. but the first time i heard him, i didn't like him, either; and i found myself with the song i'd heard stuck in my head, and i coudln't remember where i heard it until i accidentally listned to it again, not remembering why it was on my computer. i downloaded a few songs by his various bands, because i was looking up the music used in the show The Adventures of Pete & Pete, if anyone remembers that show. i really liked it, so i decided to look up the music that was used in it. Stephin Meritt has been around for longer than you may think, and he's got a lot of bands, and a lot of songs; he's produced albums under the bands The 6ths, The Future Bible Heroes, The Gothic Archies, and The Magnetic Fields, all of which have a super refreshing sound, and a kind of sarcastic undertone that always makes me smile. and when they sing of drugs or sex, it's always terribly charming and tastefull, and no two songs are alike. i've really no reason to post this bad, half-assed review of them, other than i really wish the guy would get some publicity; he's been around so long, and hardly anyone knows of him. his music is so god damn good, and he doesn't get near as much credit as he desreves, and i'm hoping that beacuse of htis at least someone here will find a new band to listen to.

I have enjoyed The Magnetic Fields' "69 Love Songs." I mean, to have 3 cds worth of songs, and to have each song sound pretty different from each of the rest, is a pretty cool thing.
Other than some songs from The 6ths, I am pretty clueless to other Merritt-related projects. I'll have to look a bit deeper into them. |

he's doing songs themed about the books A Series of Unfortunate Events, and they can be found on the books-on-tape versions. actually "Lemony Snicket" is a friend of stephins, and i'm almost sure in the booklet in 69 love songs it talks about him playing accordion with them. his real name is Daniel Handler, i think they refer to him as that
