black or chrome
so.....i bought the bass with chrome knobs on it........i like 'em.
but i wanted to see how she looked all black. my Q is.......which set of knobs should i leave on the bass? chrome http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...omeorblack.jpg or black http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...meorblack1.jpg chrome http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ckorchrome.jpg or black http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...korchrome1.jpg it's a 2001 ernie ball music man......sterling edition for those that care. thanks guys.......i'm gonna go with what you all say on next sunday. |
ah hell......i shoulda done a poll...........
if one of the fine moderators could kindly hook me up with one, that'd be sweet. thanx eh. |
i think chrome is better matching to the pickups and strings and all the other metal stuff on the bass. If the black knobs matched the black of the body better, id say black, but Im going to have to go with chrome
|
Nah, black fer sure...........subtle and jazzier.
|
chrome... it matches the other metalic pieces on the bass
|
chrome baby.
When yer headbanging on stage, the spots'll do wild things off em. |
Chrome on black looks sweet
|
Chrome.
Always. |
I'm kinda leaning towards the chrome too.
Asta!! |
wow........chrome so far is kickin'.........
thanx for the input guys. |
black.
But what i think it's really missing is a second seperate pickup, Like my beautiful Rickenbacker 4001(the pic isn't mine, but mines the same. I don't have a cam, so i just did a google image search) http://www.lizzydaymont.com/images/R...frontalopt.jpg |
Put my vote in for chrome.

Rickers are sweet basses.......very nice. mines an active pickup.......so it's as if there are 3 in there........the tones this puppy produces are at both ends of the spectrum. nice tight, bright highs when you punch it.....and the deep bass lows rattle the whole damn house. i've yet to play a Rickenbacker......but have played many top of the line basses (fenders and such) and nothing comes close to what this thing does.........the feel, the sound.........i highly recommend to go play one bud......you'll love it. i see the chrome is still leading eh........ |
chrome baby chrome
|
Fly,
I'm trying to picture you playing it. I think that the 4 chrome knobs would show up better on stage, and give it a more workmanlike look, whereas the black would sort of fade into the body, giving a slicker, more of-a-piece look. Since to me you look and write more like a craftsman than someone who is trying to project that he was born with a bass in his hand, I'd say accentuate the little things and go with the chrome. Half the secret to making something look easy is to make sure that people know that it's complicated. |
I'd go with the chrome... but then again, I'm the type that would prefer chrome wheels on a black car to powder-coated black wheels on a black car. ;P I just think certain parts of an instrument, or a car, should stand out from others, and the strings, pickups, and knobs are those parts on a bass.
|
Definitely chrome here, you need your bling...
|
another vote for chrome... is that a music man?
|
I like the contrast of chrome on black...so go with the chrome.
|
I like the black... nice and subtle... The chrome looks too obvious.
|
I like the way the chrome looks better than the black. It fits in with the rest of the guitar's appearance better.
|
Keep the chrome. If it were a Stingray, I might go with black to contrast the chrome control cavity cover, but on the Sterling, definitly chrome, unless you want to swap out the bridge and tuning machines for black also.

yup.........a Sterling Quote:
see that was the other way i coulda gone too,but then why the hell not buy one already set up right? so far the chrome is kickin' major ass. thanx all. |
black, there's too much chrome otherwise.
|
Black! Just looks way better I think.

Another vote for Chrome
Looks sweet dude. Never played a Music Man so how does it play? Does it stay in tune up the neck pretty good? The only bass I ever played that stayed in tune up the neck was a Rickenbacker. My Kramer has great tone quality, but loses it at the high end of the neck pretty bad. |
Chrome - it highlights the design rather than trying to mask it. Very nice.
|
As long as it is able to duplicate as closely as possible what is in your head and convey that to other peoples' heads who cares what it looks like?

GOT.......she plays awesome.....never have i yet to play one as nice........ we do 3 to 4 hour sessions and i only tune her at the start of the night....incredible how well she stays in tune. the intonation is spot on.......if i wanna hit a hit a high G beyond the "E" octave....it is there.........i love this damn bass.......... and so far,........chrome it is. |
i vote for chrome
|

jesus Top........from what you've said here.....chrome it is man...... i think you got me with the word "accentuate".........i like shit like that. it is all about the little things isn't it? thanks for all the info folks.........hands down......chrome it is!!!!!! |
Black. The chrome looks cheap.
Just like a Les Paul with tone and volume knobs that look like poker chips stacked 4 high. Much better with knobs that look like a leprechaun hat type of thing,...if anyone understands that. |

the only reason i was able to afford this sweet unit,is because some fuckin' bastard thieves stole all my other guitars and i used my insurance cash to rebuild the little collection. *and don't tell any one but......i scored the music man for only $900.....* |
Those bastards! Jay showed me pics of your collection and it was pretty impressive. Were you able to get more than just the sterling?
$900 is an awesome price...reminds me of my recent purchase of a 79 Dean V for $199!!! Don't tell anyone! |
i actually got sorta lucky with my green dillion electric..........my bro in law found it about 8 months later in a pawn shop in new west.........he bought it back for me and i payed him outta my claim too........so i bought that one twice really.........
and i've yet to replace my 12 string acoustic........but a friend has one ,so when we record....we just use his. i think i've only seen one pic of your guitar along time back.......can't remember what you had. drop a pic in here if you have one.....i'd like to check out your stuff. |
i would go with the chrome
unless of course you are doing some kind of black metal/gothy type thing. but i assume that, if you were, there would not even be a question and the knobs would already be black like everything else. have you posted any links to your recorded stuff yet? if yes, could you refer me to it? if no, post something here..... |
